Are you saying that if a member accidentally, or the internet
provider purposely, codes a message as spam that this action gets
sent back to IO and then the person is unsubscribed, without the
group owner's approval, because of it?
Not with all email services, but yes with some.
Though, at least in the case of messages automatically delivered to the spam folder, it seems to be the act (user or automated) of deleting the message while still in the Spam folder which triggers the notice back to the list provider (Groups.io, in our case). Hence the advice, if you use such an afflicted service, to always check your spam folder and mark as "not spam" any messages from Groups.io groups that may have landed there. Well, all legit messages actually.
Does the same thing happen in YG's?
No.
I don't know the actual timeline, but J is correct that this is something relatively new (in the last several years) that some email services are doing, and something in which Y!Groups never to my knowledge participated.
