Re: loading pdf files

Pam,

as to trying to download the pdf anyway and having it work it was a
blank page. even the single page document came up that way.
Odd.

For me Edge (on Win10 Pro, version 1803) reliably opens PDF files from my Group's File list in-browser - it does not prompt me to download them. I think to download the file I'd have to use the Save function from within the PDF page's toolbar. That includes the PDF file I uploaded with Edge by ignoring the thumbnail error.

For most other file types (JPG, TXT, etc.) it gives me a prompt "What do you want to do with [filename]?" with buttons for Open, Save or Cancel.

Some of this behavior is no doubt configurable, but I'm not proficient with Edge.

Re: Can I transfer a Yahoo Group I don't own or moderate?

Jim,

My main question was just "how do I find out who the moderator
is/was"?
Wow, I really misunderstood you.

Examine a message posted in 2016 or earlier. If the group was fully moderated it doesn't matter which message, but you need a message that was approved by a moderator. The quickest way to get back to 2016 in the archive is via the table of messages at the bottom of the group's Info/about (aka "home") page.

Open an arbitrary message and in the View menu select "View Source". The top of the message window will be occupied by the header fields of the message. This will look rather messy unless you're used to looking at them. Scroll down (or search) to find a field (line) that starts:
X-eGroups-Approved-By:

The rest of that field will contain the Yahoo ID and email address of the moderator that approved that message. If you can find no such field then this message did not require approval, and you'll need to try again.

The bad news, apart from the search for an approved message, is that the email address will be "fig-leafed", with "@..." masking the domain part.
You might simply guess, and try the "name@" you found against the top 10 or so likely email services.

Or, you can look for any message posted by that moderator. The difficulty here is that in the Conversations it will show the person's Display name, which may not be either his yahoo ID or his email address. But if you do find an example of that moderator posting you can use View Source on that message, I believe a little more reading of the header fields may turn up clues that give away the email service that sent the message, allowing you to complete the address.

I can at least copy files over but I do not have "permission" to do
that and I was not just going to grab them without asking...but I
can't ask because my posts die of neglect after 14 days and never even
make it to the list.
It would be tedious, but you can use the techniques above to discover the email address of members who posted content of interest - if you can also find a message posted by that person.

Re: Curious problem logging in

I had the same thing happen a little over a week ago.? The password I saved last time wouldn't work so I typed it in , no go.? I had them send me a link and it went to my old yahoo address not my gmail.? So once I got in, I merged the old account with the new and hope it lets me back in when mypassword runs out next month.

Re: loading pdf files

I can agree with what you said about edge. I switched to using it when I first got windows 10 because chrome had not yet caught up with 10. now I think they have worked out some of their problems with 10 and many programs that didn't used to work now work just fine and even better under 10 than edge does. I also find that edge does not like to remember cookies on certain sites that I go to all the time.

as to trying to download the pdf anyway and having it work it was a blank page. even the single page document came up that way.

Edge is just plain not yet ready for prime time. Anyone having a problem
while using Edge probably should try another browser before looking elsewhere
for the cause of the problem.

I think the short answer is: you can't.
have moved a few other groups so am aware of the process.? My main question was just "how do I find out who the moderator is/was"?? One member posted to the group asking a moderator to identify but none did.? So I was mostly asking how I could obtain the email address of the moderator since yahoo group owner email does not reach or is not read by the existing owner/moderator.? I suspect the owner is either dead or at least incapacitated so finding the email and name would not help but it might.? Yahoo used to offer a way for someone to take over the group but that vanished when Verizon bought them.

To use the transfer mechanism as it stands you need to be able to promote the transfer agent to moderator in the Y!Group. Which means you must be at least a moderator with the privilege to change moderator status.

The longer version is that you can make a personal copy of the group's content with PG Offline, but there is (as yet anyway) no facility to load that copy into a Groups.io group.

Re: Answering Messages In Digest Mode With the Braille Note 4

Patty,

A co-list member has written a message asking about how to answer
messages in digest mode.
...
The problem is that for some reason, on my BrailleNote Touch running
Android 4, I'm not finding the edit field in which to write my
message.
Another resource for your co-list member might be The Tech Zone:
/g/the-tech-zone

While they are a general technology list they seem to have a lot of information on assistive technologies. Though it is a smaller group than GMF she may be more likely to find someone there who uses the same device.

Pam,

I was using edge.

Ah, interesting. Using Edge I see that error in the Upload File dialog too. It is where a thumbnail of the file should show:

I don't know why edge was choking on loading a pdf file. it didn't seam to matter what was in the file. I tried just making one with a simple sentence like this is a test to see if this file will load as the only part of the pdf and still could not get it to load in edge.

Try ignoring that and click the Add button anyway. When I did the file apparently uploaded correctly into my test group. That is, I can now see the file in the group's Files list, and clicking on its name, even in Edge, opens the file in the browser window:

Shal, you're mixing up enforcement and penalties. Enforcement is about stopping the violation of a copyright. Penalties are typically assessed based on value. But a person with enough money or will to afford a lawyer can make an issue of such use and require removal, even if no monetary damages are assessed. There are many internet forums that are very concerned about such issues. Admitted, the written word is the most difficult to prove originality, but on a group that insists on not removing anything, that might not be so difficult. When one mixes in the possibility of paid premium groups where the content arguably *is* the product, it might get messier. I can see why Mark has continued to let posters retain control of their content, since he has the most to lose.

By the way, registration is no longer required for most copyright issues as long as one can prove they are the original source. Photos are the best example of this; copyright begins at the creation and that image need not be registered nor published. As I noted before, proving originality of the written word is more problematic, but in such a situation, a group's stated rules requiring that users give up control of their content looks bad.

Yes, I tend to take a very conservative viewpoint of copyright law. I have on a couple occasions knowingly violated it myself, although I made every effort to contact the source and credit them even though they never responded.

I still believe the safest way to deal with the situation in question is to quote the original poster in a reply where one is protected by fair use. This might also be a good way to deal with misinformation, since groups.io keeps everything together in threads. I could also see adding a moderator note to suc a post noting it's controversial nature and directing the reader to a rebuttal.

For more information see for a start.

Can I transfer a Yahoo Group I don't own or moderate?

I am sorry if this deviates from the conversation but I have had no luck in finding the answer.

I have a group on Groups.io because the sole owner/moderator of the Yahoo group abandoned the group.? Attempts to contact have gone nowhere and I can't ind out who it was since the contact address is the standard yahoo (and groups.io) type owner address.? I can't even post in the yahoo group since I from the start was on first message moderate and that was over 2 years ago.? I would like to bring over the messages and files from the group but have had no luck finding who I need to contact to do that.? Any suggestions?

Thank you.
