If Susie (or someone with mod privileges in her group) can run the

her an mbox format copy of the group Conversations. Notably that app was

Of course this is with the caveat that these chrome apps may or may not

Thanks for the reply, Shal. It certainly is generous of Mark to create an app that would generate an mbox file
and to import it into a group. I hope that will still work for those with Yahoo groups. If he is still willing to import archives
that would be a boon for those transferring mailman groups and those with their own mbox files from their mail readers. That is a good reason to use either Claws or Thunderbird
to ensure you have your own copy of all your group's messages aver the years. There may be other mail reads that use the mbox files but these two are reliable. Actually if you
export and back up your Gmail archives from Google those may also be mbox files.

Cheers,

Lawrence

There is no password for the group, only for each member's account.? If that person is till a member of the group, you can delete their account.? You could also Ban that email address if you choose to.

If you're sure you have the first notification checked, "Email when there are messages needing approval.", on your subscription, then you will need to contact support to see what's going on.

Owner message approval email notification

Hi, New owner here. I have searched for an answer to not avail. I have all the email owner notifications checked. The only restriction I have is approval of the first message - but that is the only email notification I am not getting. I get new members and replies to messages, but not the one I want to get so I can readily approve it. Is there a solution?

Re: Announced to Yahoo group we were moving, then saw that Yahoo is preventing transfers. Now what? #transfer #yahoo

FYI, last September, Mark has helped me import messages (in mbox format), which were exported from a groups.io group, to a new subgroup. I guess the same could be done for messages exported from a Yahoo group.

Very Important Question #groupowner

I am the group owner of a couple of groups on Groups IO. I have the paid subscription. When we started with you changing over from Yahoo, I had the co-owner handle that part.
She has now left and I am told that when the account is set up there is a password. I don't know anything about that and since I am paying for the subscription, I need to find out
how I do get the password and have someone contact me with information so she won't be allowed access to the groups.

Thank you very much

Re: Files not transferred from Yahoo Group #transfer

Randy,

When I transferred my groups from Yahoo all but one went well. One of
my groups did not transfer over the "files" and "attachment" sections.
Attachments weren't copied over for any groups.

With Files (and Photos) it depended on whether the agent could access them at the time of the transfer. The advice had been to wait until access to the section seems to be working, then delete the record of the transfer from the Existing Transfers list then set up a new one, this time deselecting everything except the missing section (Files or Photos).

However with the transfer mechanism shut down at the moment I'm not sure what to suggest that's any better than manually uploading them folder by folder.

The download side you may be able to improve upon by using PG Offline, a product of Personal Groupware:

Re: Login/Email change

Hi Joel,

Sorry for the lengthy reply, but I'm late to the game so I'm reading through all of your posts in this topic and responding to them with this one post. Some of this simply restates others' replies, but hopefully I'm adding some more context.

Right now for testing purposes I have used a personal email to get
started. If I change the email that is tagged to this account will
it also change the login email?
As Frances said, your email address is your login ID. If you go to the Account page when you are logged in you can change it; you will thereafter need to log in using the new address.

Or is there a way to change the login and email separately?
If you want to log in to Groups.io, and access your group's web pages via one address; yet receive group messages at a second address, you'll need to subscribe both of them to your group. They'll each have its own Groups.io account, which may be used to log in access the group as a member (or mod or owner).

I need to get it moved to the club email for future use.
What "it" do you need to get moved?

If you are talking about owner privileges in the group, you can have more than one address assigned that role. Join the group with the additional address, then (logged in with one of the current Owner addresses) change the role of the new address to also be owner (or mod).

Accounts are not the same as groups.

A log-in account is tied to an email address, and that one log-in is used by that one email users to access any and all group subscriptions that address may have.

A group is a collection of subscriber addresses, at least one of which must have the "owner" role, together with all the content emailed or uploaded to the group.

No what I would like to do is have the club email as the login but use
an alias to get help with the account and not have all the info on the
club email.
I'm not sure what you mean by "the login", but you and each subscriber to the group would log in for access to the group using his or her own email address. There is no communal log in to Groups.io.

The club email, if subscribed to the group, would receive whatever group postings, in whatever format, as specified by its subscription options. The same is true for any email address subscribed to the group.

I think I understand what you are saying however, only certain
board/trustees would have change abilities. The general membership
would have only post and view abilities.
Also each member board or membership would login under their email.
If you open the Members list of the group, and click on any member's row, that will open up their subscription page. That controls what information is emailed to the member, and also whether that member also has the Role of moderator or owner in the group.

The Role controls the person's level of access to the group's settings and content.

Those given the role of Owner (which would include the group creator and anyone subsequently promoted to that role) have full access to every group setting and member subscription. All owners are equals.

Those given the role of Moderator may have limited access to group administrative settings and/or member subscriptions, as defined by a list of moderator permissions. That is a list of checkboxes which will open up on the page when the Role of Moderator is selected.

Members have access that is defined by the group's Settings page. The group administrators (owners and mods) can give members access to various content areas for reading and (optionally) posting/upload; but members cannot access any of the group's Admin pages.

The club email would be maybe two each board and trustee members and
then only certain things. If possible.
The subscription held by the club email address would work the same as the rest. You (a group admin) get to decide what Role and permissions it has.

Generally speaking I would have the board and trustee members subscribe to the group with their individual email addresses, that way they get individual control of what email (if any) they want to receive from/about the group. And they can be given individualized permissions to access the group's admin controls.

In fact, unless you want group postings to be sent also to the club email address, I probably wouldn't recommend subscribing it to the group at all - there's no need.

Re: Announced to Yahoo group we were moving, then saw that Yahoo is preventing transfers. Now what? #transfer #yahoo

Lawrence,

If Susie ... has a complete or partial archive of the messages in
her group in an email folder ... on her own computer then you have a
Unix mailbox file for that Yahoo group. This is fairly portable data.
... In one instance I sent the admin of our Mailman list host and he
integrated that archive into my Mailman message archive, seamlessly.
Maybe groups.io could do the same thing for you with your new
groups.io group.
Mark has offered occasionally (in beta) to import messages conveyed to him in mbox format, for transfers from a mailman list. IIRC no one has yet posted to GMF (or beta) whether such an import has been attempted or succeeded.

Re: Links split across multiple lines

David,

Links split across multiple lines
How to stop this?
What problem do you see with this?

In my email client your example link breaks or not depending on the current width of the window where I have your message open. The link functions either way. Same deal on Groups.io's Messages section.

Bruce wrote:
Angle brackets are used a lot in html tags, and are best avoided when
typing message text.
For plain text email, such as your example, angle brackets are actually the correct delimiter for links (html, mailto, or otherwise) and will help hold them together despite being broken across lines for display.

Bruce's comment would apply to a formatted text editor, where you are better off using an Insert Link tool, if available.

See for example...
That particular topic link you can shorten to:
</g/TekScopes/topic/29595441>

Often in an URL (link) you can toss the question mark and everything following it. But I always test after doing that because sometimes (like in a search link) the parameters after the ? are significant. For example:
</g/TekScopes/search?q=7854>

Re: Editing text on homepage

John,

This must be so incredibly easy that only I have problems, I see no
guidance in the help page.
Try this wiki page, as far as I know the home page Description editor works the same as the message (New Topic or Reply) editor:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Message-composition-tips-and-tricks

I am trying to get sections of headers followed by bullet points, then
the same in the next section, ... but I do it by copying to Word then
copying back.
Copying from Word may be part of your problem. Word's formatting structures are very different, and may not copy well into Groups.io's HTML editors.

Word shows soft carriage returns between the lines, which I change to
hard carriage returns before copying back.
Shift+Enter inserts a paragraph break (similar to a hard return); Enter inserts a line break (similar to a soft return). For some formatting (especially blockquote and indent) the distinction is important. For lists though line break seems to work.

I cannot apply bullet points to the selected text only.
To get bullets I was able to type:

Intro[Enter]Item 1[Enter]Item 2[Enter]Next[Enter]

I then moved the cursor back up to Item 1 and selected it and Item 2, then clicked the Bullet List tool. The bullet formatting applies to the selected lines of text, and it is easy to accidentally include preceding or following lines in the selection.

The cursor at the beginning of a line includes that line, so you may need to use the back-arrow key to step back to the end of the prior line if you selected the lines by clicking at the start of Item 1 then using Shift+DownArrow twice.

Re: Dedent on group description

Glenn,

But found that when I tried to indent the middle line by selection, it
indented the following line and if I dedented the third line, it
dedented the second line.
Try using Shift+Enter to break the lines.

I haven't tested the Home page Description editor recently, but in a message body (New Topic or Reply) Enter inserts a line break, <br />, into the formatted text, whereas Shift+Enter inserts a paragraph break, <p> (and the corresponding end paragraph </p> somewhere later). Indent formatting operates on a paragraph basis.

Note: the Wiki page editor is the other way around: Enter is a paragraph break, Shift+Enter is a line break. The home page Description editor probably ought to work like the Wiki, but I've not tried it in ages.

When dealing with indents I find I usually need to experiment with Enter and Shift+Enter a bit to get what I want. Or else resort to the Source Code mode and subdue the HTML by hand.

Re: Contact Group Owner Link for Digests

Patty,

If the link is on the list home page, but the list member cannot
figure out how to sign into Groups.io, not sure that's very helpful.
They don't need to log in, that part of a group's home page is public. All they need do is follow the link in the digest to the group and then scroll down to where the Group Email Addresses are listed.

but some/many of my list members are computer-challenged enough not to
figure out how to search for our list while not signed into Groups.io.
No searching required. The link in the digest takes them straight to the group's home page. The only "trick" is having to scroll to the bottom of the page.

The footer on the digest really should mirror the footer on an
individual email.
You might present a persuasive case on beta to get the header/footer links of digests updated.

Especially if you can articulate what's missing and why that's a problem (what's the use case?). IMO the statement that they should mirror what's on individual messages, while perhaps a useful criteria, wouldn't by itself be a persuasive motivator for change.

Dedent on group description

Glenn Glazer

I wanted to type something like

lorem ipsum blah blah
?????? foo bar baz
quick brown cow

But found that when I tried to indent the middle line by selection, it indented the following line and if I dedented the third line, it dedented the second line.

Is this a bug or am I missing the technique of how to do this?? I eventually settled on just space indent.

Best,

Glenn

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

CHANGE: Temporarily disabled bounce processing for cox.net and
charter.net addresses, as they seem to be blocking us.
I'm not sure what the practical result of this will be.

From what people have said it sounds like the blocking hasn't been 100%, so this may allow those members to receive more messages without having to repeatedly unbounce themselves. On the other hand, without getting those services to stop their sporadic blocking of Groups.io those members are likely to still miss messages, a few or many.

/g/GroupManagersForum/message/14533
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/14623

Comments about these are welcome:

INTERNAL: Wrote a tool to move a subgroup from one enterprise account
to another enterprise account.
INTERNAL: Refactored the API code and wrote a utility to generate the
API docs from the code itself.
INTERNAL: Added additional logging to track requests over multiple
services.
BUGFIX: The Download Members button wasn't shown on the Members page
for some people who did in fact have permission to download members.
Please call out any you find significant.
