No, you do not have to necessarily mark messages as spam to have them go into a spam folder. It can be unintentional. Some of my legitimate messages have gone into the spam folder, which I have not

The "archives" is probably not what you think it is. It is simply a collection of group messages that have accumulated over the months/years. As for managing them, outside of splitting/merging threads
