When I went to search to see if a particular group was listed in one of my databases and I plugged in a partial part of the group's name for instance Flying, nothing came up. When I plugged in the complete group name but?it wasn't exactly as it was listed in the database, I still got nothing.?Only when I typed in the search field the name of the group without spaces as it was put into the database I got what?I was looking for.??
?
In Y groups you could plug in Fly....Flying...etc and the group would come up. ?If I did that in IO groups I would get nothing. I needed to plug in the entire group name as it was placed in the database in order for the record to come up. With 100's of groups listed in the database, it is time consuming to look down the list for what?I need.
?
Is there a setting that can be changed to have partial names come up?
?

NEW: Polls have a new option to never show results to members.
Can anyone explain to me why a poll would be made where the members could not see the results of their participation?

I thought the "lock group" thing was peculiar when it first came up in beta -- a search of the message archive failed to turn up any request for the feature.?Then I discovered a button at the bottom of the Settings page; and when I clicked on it, a "verify lock" dialog box came up saying:

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?"Lock this group? Locking the group prevents any changes to the group, including messages, files, photos and databases."

That seems pretty self-explanatory.

I can only think of a couple of reasons why someone would want to do this....

-- to temporarily suspend activity while a backup is underway, or
-- as a prelude to shutting down the group (i.e.: using the Member Notice as a way of reminding the stragglers).

Hope this helps,

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: Added DD.MM.YYYY date format preference.
NEW: Group default subscription preferences for date and time display.
Yay, so now there are three unambiguous date formats. That is, you can always tell which you're looking at by the punctuation:
DD.MM.YYYY
MM/DD/YYYY
YYYY-MM-DD (ISO-8601)

NEW: Locked Group member notice.
The Help page needs a paragraph for this one. The text under the notice type when you create one isn't too informative: "Message returned when someone emails the group when it is locked."

It apparently relates to this:
NEW: For premium groups, you can now lock groups/subgroups, making
them read-only.

Has anyone here used that feature, and care to describe it? Either in a message or better yet, update the Help page mock-up.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Help-Mock-up

BUGFIX: Changed references to 'sub' to 'member' in the activity log to
make things consistent. Changed several of the message actions to be
more clear.
That's one of my pet peeves, having the text of the filter items in the drop-list differ from the actual text of the log entries. However, this didn't move in the direction of consistent use of subscriber versus member.
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/22678734

CHANGE: When clicking the Subgroups tab while in a subgroup, don't
redirect to the parent group first.
Hmm... I'd been using that as the short way to get back to the primary group. I'll have to find another route.

CHANGE: Changed how we did code highlighting, now using the Google
code prettify JS instead of directly using the CSS classes.
Right now this is only for Markdown users. Adding it to the HTML message/wiki editor has been on the todo list for a while.

And I still wish I could change editing format ad-hock, from a control on the composition toolbar or the like, rather than having to go into Account Preferences.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

NEW: Polls have a new option to never show results to members.
INTERNAL: Moved S3 group deletion operations into the s3server for
async and more reliable operation.
NEW: In the Edit File dialog, you can now replace the existing file
with a new file.
NEW: Premium/Enterprise groups can now create aliases for subgroups
(previously they could only create aliases for main/parent groups).
NEW: More anti-spammer work.
NEW: Premium/Enterprise groups now have a new Banned Domains tab.
Emails from non-subscribers are rejected from banned domains, as
well as registrations.
BUGFIX: For subgroups that are unlisted but with open archives, the
feed link wasn't included on the group home page. Also, the archive
description was incorrect.
INTERNAL: Upgraded TinyMCE editor to latest version.

Please call out any you find significant.

Shal, I asked the other group owner and she reported she could not see anything related to the status of the transfer.

At the bottom right of the page is an in-process box. Click in it and select one of your groups.

You should have status information here for each transfer that is pending. Best option is to send us a screenshot.

There is no way you should still be waiting after 2-1/2 months. A step must have been skipped. You have posted this comment several times without any follow-up. Until you actually act on our recommendations we will be unable to help you.

Re: Hashtags & their removal . . . #hashtags

Unless the individual hashtag has the "Use by Mods Only" option set, members should be able to use them.

I'm not aware of any way, except editing the subject line, to remove the hashtag.

Re: Hashtags & their removal . . . #hashtags

Hi Dano & Thanx for the reply.

I haven't had that problem since early on I did set Hashtags so that only moderators can create them, although the membership apparently can use them.

So far however none of our members have tried using any. Maybe that setting doesn't actually allow them to use hashtags.

At this point though I am guessng that the Moderators will be the ones who will wind up removing any unneeded hashtags from wherever we applied them by editing them out of the Subject Line. I cannot se any other way.

Maybe someone else here on GMF will have a suggestion for how that I still have not thought of.

Fingers X-ed!

Re: Hashtags & their removal . . . #hashtags

Gentle GMF Members,

I know that I can do an edit of the Subject Line and delete
just the hashtag portion there to remove any of them from
a posted message.

But I was wondering whether there is another way to do
this which I am somehow overlooking.

TIA

Paul M.
Paul -
If your group is like mine, the odd hashtags were the result of people using the symbol to designate "number". I found that I had to change most of them in different ways depending on the original wording and usage, in order to make the subject line make sense. Most of the problems were because groups.io relocates hashtags to the end of the subject and so jumbles the meaning. On a couple of mine I had to go back to the Yahoo message to determine what the author was trying to say. Luckily I only had a dozen or so, but it still took a while, searching out the original messages.

Re: Transfer process

Shal, thanks so much! it did say that my attention was needed, The other owner thought she had completed the process, but maybe not since I was the one who initiated the transfer.
We are anxious to get our other groups transferred.
I'll ask the other owner if she can see the status of the transfer.

Re: New moderator - could use a little help, sticky wiki, wikis referencing other wikis, adding #hashtags reference to group home page #hashtags

Peter,

Within the GeneralInfo wiki, I would like to have a button for ...
Being careful with terminology here.

I know you can insert links into a Groups.io wiki page, but I don't know if you can insert a "button" and make it stick. The wiki mechanism strips many formatting elements, especially active ones that might be exploited. I don't believe you can place your own javascript in a groups.io wiki page, for example.

I also see that #hashtags only have a description text. It would be
nice to put the associated wiki as a "button" somewhere in the
#hashtag, either the description or otherwise (if otherwise, I have no
clue how to do that).
There does not appear to be a way to do that. The Description is plain text only.

On the issue of the URL, I tried copying the #hashtag out of the
browser, but it apparently add spaces and is a "search" reference, not
a direct address.
I'm not sure where you want the URL to take you, but if you just want it to bring up the list of topics containing that hashtag (same as the hashtag page would do) then an URL of this form should work:
/g/GroupManagersForum/search?q=%23changelog

That is a generic search URL (could search for any word), the "%23" in there is an encoding for the # character (which can't be used in the URL directly).

Re: Transfer process

Joan,

Is there any sort of notification telling us we

Go back to the Yahoo Groups instructions page. Down at the bottom select your Y!Group's name from the In Process list. That should bring you to a status page which may have a message at the top.

At the bottom will be your copy selections, along with an Update button in case you want to change anything before giving the final go-ahead (Step 4).

I believe that only you (logged in using the same address you were when you initiated the transfer) can see its status.

Shal
P.S.: Does anyone else here know for certain if other owners of the same Groups.io group (or the same Y!Group) can see the status of a transfer between those two groups?

Re: New moderator - could use a little help, sticky wiki, wikis referencing other wikis, adding #hashtags reference to group home page #hashtags

Thanks Shal,
I am probably not describing this well (always a problem with email and postings).

I want to have a list of available #hashtags and the associated wikis with in depth explanations and examples associated to those #hashtags at the top of the Messages list.

I understand this is available via a "sticky wiki". ?Call that sticky wiki "GeneralInfo".

Within the GeneralInfo wiki, I would like to have a button for )as examples):
#ScheduleEvent and for the wiki ScheduleEventInfo.
#ClubInfo and the wiki ClubInfo.
#ClubDues and the wiki ClubDuesInfo.

Sort of like (I haven't worked out the final text yet):
"For more information on club activities, contact information, dues and finance, click on the the #hashtag button or read more about that club offering by accessing the wiki on that offering."
#ScheduleEvent or read more at the ScheduleEventInfo wiki. ?<--The blue text would be buttons to #hashtag and the wiki.
Etc.

Within the example ScheduleEventInfo wiki, I would like to have other direct references via a single click to other wikis.

I also see that #hashtags only have a description text. It would be nice to put the associated wiki as a "button" somewhere in the #hashtag, either the description or otherwise (if otherwise, I have no clue how to do that).

On the issue of the URL, I tried copying the #hashtag out of the browser, but it apparently add spaces and is a "search" reference, not a direct address.

I will try the wiki. ?That seems pretty straight forward and I didn't actually try that (duh) for the wiki.

Thanks again,
Pete

That led me wonder how I could expand that to reference all the other
#hashtag's and their associates wikis.
So the first confusion I'm having is that hashtags aren't associated with wikis, they're a feature of messages (topics).

My idea was to create a "master" wiki named something like
"GeneralInfo" and within that, emplace references and text that would
allow people to get a 1 sentence explanation of a given #hashtag and
"click through" to the appropriate #hashtag and/or the associated
wiki.
This GeneralInfo page sounds a little like GMF's Home wiki page, which is mostly a list of links to other Wiki pages.

But Hashtags already have an index of their own, and each hashtag can have a description. Though admittedly in GMF's hashtags the only one I've even briefly described is #admin.
/g/GroupManagersForum/hashtags
Looks like the beta group has descriptions for only about three of their hashtags:

In both groups I think that's because most of the hashtags were created implicitly by use - someone used the hashtag in a message subject. Then no one (no moderator) went back and added a description for it.

I don't see a way to define a direct wiki URL.
I'm not sure what you mean.

When you create a wiki page it is given an URL based on the Title field. After you Save the new page you can visit the page and copy it's URL out of your browser's address bar. Something like this:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Footers

The URL in my browser is a search algorithm if I click on a specific
#hashtag, not a URL reference.
That's what hashtags do. They don't bring you to a place, they bring you a list of the topics containing that hashtag (in the topic subject).

Any suggestions or alternatives?
I hope my answers above give you a fresh perspective, and maybe a fresh set of questions.

Shal

Mass-change the "Message Selection" setting for all members

When viewing the member list under "Admin", there is an action option
at the bottom to set the "Email Delivery" setting for all selected
members. I was wondering if there is a way to do the same for the
"Message Selection" setting as well. We initially set up our group to
only email subscribers with topics they post or follow, but would now
like to switch everyone to be receiving all messages.

We have already changed the default setting for new users, but would
like to retroactively apply this to all current members as well.

Thank you,
Kosta

Transfer process

hi,?
i am a co owner of three yahoo groups and we have been exploring the transfer process to IO groups. We began with our small moderator group to test the process and smooth any rough edges we might have before moving the main big group. My question is this...after you finish the transfer process, we sort of expected a screen to pop up and tell us we had completed everything and were put in the transfer waiting line..so to speak. But nothing like that happened, so now we are wondering if we did everything right? Is there any sort of notification telling us we basically just have to wait now??
Thanks,?
Joan?
