Re: Groups.io site updates #changelog

NEW: You can now change the owner of a photo album.
NEW: You can now change the owner of an individual photo.
These will be a help for groups where the moderator had to copy photos
manually, or replace photos with resized ones.
Just the other day I found this out on my group, and I thought I had discovered an unknown way to change or assign an owner to a photo album. I was so excited to share my discovery with everyone, and now Mark just blew the wind out of my sails...lol

This fix along with being able to move pictures is a big plus! Now if we could reorder pictures, and do mass deletes. ?

Re: Not receiving emails?

Supanut.

Starting yesterday, I found out that I'm not receiving any emails from
Groups.io when a new topic or reply of a topic I followed has been
posted to one of the groups I've subscribed to.
Or, it could be this:

Go to your Subscription page for that group and have a look in your Email Delivery History tab to see if you can learn whether those messages were in fact sent out. If so, the most recent should show in either the Successful or Unsuccessful box.

If Unsuccessful, the box should tell you why.

Make note of the dates of any listed Successful or Unsuccessful messages. If there's a more recent message that should have fit your following rules yet is missing from these lists then that may indicate a problem that should be reported to [email protected].

I just checked in my subscription setting, and it is set to receiving
individual emails, the first message in a post box was also ticked.
Presumably you've selected "Following Only" (in the Advanced Preferences), as otherwise the "First Message Also" box wouldn't be meaningful.

Re: help with what this message means?

June,

i sent invites out and 2 members with Hotmail and one with MSN email
addresses are flagged with that message.
How do I fix it so they can be part of the group?
If you mean that the invites themselves bounced, wait a while (not sure if that's hours or days) and try the invitation again. The message said it was a temporary rate limit, so they may eventually get through.

But: until HotMail/MSN (and probably Outlook and any other Microsoft-owned email services) decide to whitelist that Groups.io outbound server, and all Groups.io's other outbound servers, members using those services may find that they do not receive all messages from the group. Leading to dissatisfaction.

Hopefully this is a transient condition and Groups.io will eventually get on Microsoft's "good" list.

It could be that the messages are off to members but wasn't the transfer email set to moderator
The it should have been able to see the messages.
I am not going to?dwell on it because any messages that were in the?Y group were of no use to anyone because they were signature tag offers which long expired.
?
If I was going to transfer another group of mine it would be the same thing - a tag group.
I will not be transferring any of my sharing groups as the group is an email group and any shares that are made need to be viewed via email and not messages or archives.

Check that group's In Process page. If the "Transfer Messages" box is
unchecked that would explain it.
?
The only other possibility I can think of is if the Yahoo Group's
"Messages-Who can see" setting is "Off" (on the Access Control tab). But
if that were the case you'd already know that the group has no messages
to copy.

Not receiving emails?

Hi all,
Starting yesterday, I found out that I'm not receiving any emails from Groups.io when a new topic or reply of a topic I followed has been posted to one of the groups I've subscribed to. Yesterday I posted a reply to a topic in that group, and I didn't receive any emails, normally after I posted a reply I would receive an email about the reply that I've posted.
I just checked in my subscription setting, and it is set to receiving individual emails, the first message in a post box was also ticked.
I wonder what's going on here.

Changing names of owners of photos

Is this something all members can do or only the moderators?

Re: Lamentable Yahoo Groups

Over 100 Million users in over 10 Million groups, in its heyday - around a decade ago. That was posted on the Groups Team blog at one point.

Holy Mother of God.? Someone dropped the ball.? That is a huge audience for advertisers.? I think Yahoo?must have gotten just too big and too unwieldy to manage.? I just have no explanation as to why you?would not tend that like a baby.? That is the Fatted Calf for a company, to draw advertisers.?

The calendar redesign of 2012 was the beginning of the end from my point of view, but the 2013 "Neo" redesign looms large for many folks, and then the steady withdrawal of support since then.

Neo was the death knell.? The old platform needed to be rewritten - there were holes in the dyke too large to plug,?and it was teetering on complete failure.? I don't think there was serious forethought to investing in resources to?manage the platform as it aged, and they didn't take care of their developers, so they all left (the most obvious?being Mark).? My personal experience:? Companies that do not value or take care of their human resources are not?healthy, and will eventually suffer dire consequences.? Yahoo is just one of many.? I've worked for companies that sold out to a holding company that did not value the FTE.? Those companies ended up becoming shells of their former selves.? The good employees left.? Such shortsightedness is headshaking to me.

Plus there's this mystery intriguing me:

Hilarious if it were... Oath. But he might not cite them with "excitement" so much as dread. So probably better (for all concerned) if it is someone willing to spend money.

Hah.? Interesting.? If it were, that would be the ULTIMATE karma for Mark, would it not?? Will be very interesting to see he that might be, will be watching.

Re: Request for someone with a test group that has subgroups... #subgroups

Don,

If you happen to have a test group set up that includes subgroups (or
already know the answer), would you be willing to try something and
let me know what happens?
I'm willing to let you tell us what happens:

The primary group is restricted, the subgroup is not.

What's the result? Is the user subscribed to only the main group, or
both the main group and the subgroup?
I think I'd prefer the latter (done in one step), but it wouldn't surprise me to find that you're directed to the subscription flow for the primary group.

Lamentable Yahoo Groups

Patty,

Re: [GMF] How to Transfer a Yahoo Group, but Reduce the Photos Section
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/9085

... that had, at one time, about 3 million users (or more, possibly).
Over 100 Million users in over 10 Million groups, in its heyday - around a decade ago. That was posted on the Groups Team blog at one point.

That's a LOT of advertising eyeballs they are willing to ignore, and I
find that inexplicable from my business/marketing experience.
No doubt there has been considerable attrition since its heyday. Is that too understated?

The calendar redesign of 2012 was the beginning of the end from my point of view, but the 2013 "Neo" redesign looms large for many folks, and then the steady withdrawal of support since then.

Groups.io has picked up a couple million users, many of them recently, and that's nothing to sneeze at. Probably not all of them came from Yahoo Groups, but it wouldn't surprise me if the vast majority did. So that may be some measure of the residual "eyeballs" Y!Groups has discarded already.

I wonder if there's anyone at Yahoo/Oath/Verizon tracking the activity stats and noticing a trend... From the sound of things, probably not.

Plus there's this mystery intriguing me:

Hilarious if it were... Oath. But he might not cite them with "excitement" so much as dread. So probably better (for all concerned) if it is someone willing to spend money.

Re: Spam from Facebook

I sent a note about this to Support, and here's what they said:

It looks like Facebook changed their URL structure a bit for data returned from their API. For your page, we used to get entries with URLs like:?

Yesterday, it appears they switched to using your pageid instead. The same entry now comes back as:

We use the URL as a key indicator whether an entry is new or not. Perhaps I need to look into a secondary indicator, such as a hash.

Re: some links in footer not working

Win,

She is receiving, reading messages and replying all in her Postbox
program, all without any problems except the Reply to Group and Reply
to Sender not working in the groups.io mail.
It is as Toby said: those links are "mailto:" links, not web links. They work differently than web links and may not work if one's email interface and operating system aren't set up to handle them.

It is only in groups.io messages that the links don¡¯t work for her,
the ¡°reply¡± links in any Yahoo group work fine.
The Reply links in a Yahoo Groups formatted digest are also "mailto:" links. If her claim is that those work then I don't know what to tell you. Those in a Groups.io formatted digest or individual message have exactly the same syntax.

Something quirky with her Postbox program?

Re: help with what this message means?

Dan,

Did Groups.IO reject it due to HotMail's reputation or did Hotmail
reject it due to Groups.Io reputation
HotMail rejected the message delivery from Groups.io, claiming that Groups.io's server, [66.175.222.12], has been sending them too many messages and isn't known to them as a valid list server ("temporarily rate limited due to IP reputation").

and either way, how do we remedy the problem?
You could cite that member's delivery history to Groups.io [email protected], but they're likely already aware of issues with delivering to HotMail (and Microsoft generally).

The other approach would be for the member to go to HotMail support and demand to have groups.io whitelisted so that he/she can receive all the messages he/she subscribed for. Whether one can get HotMail to pay any attention is another matter.

Re: bouncing - I have the same problem - please advise!

Erica,

I have a member whose emails to the list are bouncing ¨C she has
clicked the 'unbounce' link at the bottom and received an (online)
acknowledgement that this has worked.
The message she forwarded to you appears to be a "bounce probe" - a standard message Groups.io sends when a subscriber's email address is in "bouncing" state. This happens when the subscriber's email service has rejected messages from Groups.io.

But she still can't send messages.
As long as she is in Bouncing status she can neither receive messages from nor post messages to the group.

It would be more helpful though to know why she can't send messages. That is, what happens when she tries? Is she trying via email or by the group's New Topic or Reply features? Does she get an error message of some kind? What does it say?

I have looked at her entry in the members' list but there is no "B"
for bouncing or any indication that anything is wrong.
This leads me to suspect that she may have two email addresses, and is sending to your group from an address different from address subscribed in your group. If it is that other address which is "bouncing" that would explain why you don't see the B on her "good" address.

What should I do? Will it help to unsbuscribe her and re-invite her?
No, I wouldn't start with that.

Firstly, compare the email address in her forwarded "bounce probe" message with the email address listed in your group's Members list. If they are not the same that tells the tale.

Secondly, look in your group's Activity Log.

Put her subscribed email address into the Search box and click the blue Search button. Does it show you any attempted posts? This should tell you why they didn't post.

Do the same with the email address from her "bounce probe" (if different).

help with what this message means?

PACC Forums Admin

One of my group members asked why they didn't get a message that was posted this morning.? I checked their delivery history and found this in the did not deliver section.? Can someone help me understand what this means?? Did Groups.IO reject it due to HotMail's reputation or did Hotmail reject it due to Groups.Io reputation and either way, how do we remedy the problem?

Thanks -- Dan

Re: Help transferring from Yahoogroups

B,

One thing I¡¯ve noticed is that, at no time despite what I describe
above, have either of the groups I¡¯m trying to transfer been listed in
the ¡°In Process¡± drop-down box that appears at
/yahootransfer.
That is peculiar. And likely relates to the delay you're having.

The list is specific to a given logon, so to see your Y!Groups listed there you must be logged in using the same email address as you were when you clicked the the "Start Group Transfer Process" button at the bottom of the page where you entered your Y!Group address and selected your Groups.io group.

However the transfer has not happened since then, after I signaled to
groups.io that was ready to proceed.
Ok, there's some confusion here. How did you signal to groups.io that you were ready to proceed?

The way you're supposed to do it (by clicking the button on the In Process page) presumes you first were able to find the Y!Group in the In Process list and clicked on it to open its page. So my suspicion is that you haven't actually signaled your readiness (not in a way the mechanism recognizes).

Since then I have gone through the easy transfer steps two more times,
in case something was gummed up somewhere. No result.
There is clearly something gummed up here. But to guess at what that is we'd need a detailed account of exactly what steps you took.

I'd suggest you review Bruce's step-by-step process here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8697
and also the hints in our Wiki here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups
to see if there's anything that helps resolve your stuck state.
