Re: Need Help [with subgroup]
Dennis,
Instead of having the primary forum sending out emails now I have a new link called Main doing this. You will notice that it is main @ groupname. where groupname is the original group name. The original name is now the "common denominator" linking the primary group and all the subgroups. You can change main to something more meaningful to your group if you like. In my PTA group I made the primary group members @ mypta. because the primary group includes the entire membership (those that want to be on the email list) of the PTA unit. I then have subgroups such as board, teachers, etc. ? The sub group does not have all the members from the primary forum added to the sub group forum. That's correct, primary group members are not automatically added to each subgroup. Membership in subgroups is optional for primary group members. Or you, as a moderator of the primary group, can use a grid of checkboxes in the Subgroups page (in the Admin set of pages) to control which subgroup(s) each primary group member is in. ? How do I get eliminate the main and go back to the primary groups name In the primary group's Settings page you can adjust both parts of the email address, the primary group's name to the left of the @ sign, and the collective name for the primary and all subgroups to the right of the @ sign. This setting also controls the web address of primary and subgroups. My recommendation is to focus on what's in common for the collective name. In my PTA group the collective name is an abbreviation of the name of our PTA unit. The names of the primary and subgroups then reflect the functional group within the unit (members, board, teachers, etc.). ? and make the subgroup have all members added from the primary group? How do these two groups really work? In most respects the primary group and each subgroup operate as independent groups. Each has its own messages archive, and other web features. Each has its own settings. The members of each have separate subscriptions to each (for example, one can receive individual emails from a subgroup while opting for a digest in the primary group). The one big exception is membership. Subgroups are subsets of the primary group's membership. That is, one must be a member of the primary group in order to be a member of one of its subgroups. One convenience is that moderators of the primary group can directly add members to subgroups without the formality of having to invite them or ask them to join -- this is true even for Basic (free) groups. Subgroups also share the pricing plan of the primary group: If you upgrade the primary group to the Premium or Enterprise plan the subgroups go with it. This means, I believe, that the storage quota is also shared between the primary group and its subgroups. Need Help [with subgroup]
I am new to making a forum and liked how Groups.io is structured.
However, now I have a problem. Creating a new forum was easy and setting up was just as easy and worked well. After a few weeks decide that another forum will help the first and decided to make a subgroup off the primary forum, that seemed to go well but the structure of the two was changed. Instead of having the primary forum sending out emails now I have a new link called Main doing this. The sub group does not have all the members from the primary forum added to the sub group forum. The subgroup you have to join to separately. How do I get eliminate the main and go back to the primary groups name and make the subgroup have all members added from the primary group? How do these two groups really work? Dennis [Subject enhanced by moderator] |

Hi,
I noticed that once a new user subscribes to my mailing they are also added to [email protected], I don't see how my users are interested in that. Is there a way to disable that? Thanks, Andre |

I didn't provide guidance on how to transfer into a subgroup, edit the areas to be transferred, or transfer several groups at once. I didn't mention the emails going to subscribers upon completion [something not readily verifiable by the owner], or how to keep that from happening. I left out a lot of "best practices" already discussed elsewhere. And of course, contacting GIO support is always an option if you find yourself stuck. When people are struggling with the basic process, it's best to focus on the basics. I encourage those undergoing this process to also examine the GMF wiki at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups?and scour it thoroughly for supplemental information. That said, I'd like to think the content of my previous email should be sufficient to get most people from Point A to Point B. ? Regards, Bruce -- The system Help is your friend.??/static/help |

Thanks for trying to bring some order to this process. I offer a couple additions. First, your RTF document loses the numbering when converted to plain text, so I have added it manually. (Many groups are set to plain text so messages show in the *reader's* preferred font and size instead of being limited to the sender's preferences.) I have added additional information to your step 9 and included a step 9B in case step 9 fails to complete. This happens more often than we'd like. An added suggestion when setting up your groups.io group is to set the group to fully moderated. (Settings>Settings>Spam Control> Moderated) to keep people from posting until the transfer process is complete. Any such posts would fall within the old messages being transferred and would be out of order. After the transfer is complete, change the group to your preferred setting. I would also recommend asking people to not join the new group until after the transfer process, in order to maintain ownership of content (posts, photos, files, etc.) that they posted to the old group that will be transferred. Ask members who wish to change their email address associated with groups.io to wait until after the move and use the "change email address" process, rather than re-subscribing, so they can retain control of their own content. These additions are based on past experience with a number of difficult transfers. If Yahoo weren't so troubled, these steps might not be necessary. But then again, if Yahoo weren't so troubled there might not be the heavy demand to move either. Dano ----- Original Message -----

Include a paragraph on irony at the end.] Here is the process. It is not automated and will take several days. Do not do anything out of order. 1. Go here: / 2. At the bottom of the page, you'll find a link that says "Easy Group Transfer." Click it. 3. Scroll to the bottom of the subsequent page and click on the big blue button labelled "Yahoo Group Instructions." 4. Read the instructions carefully. Bookmark this page, too. You will come back here several times. 5. Create your groups.io group and configure it according to your needs. [NOTE: You will receive an email when your request for a group has been approved. This alone could take up to a day.] =(You have now completed Step 0 of the instructions)= 6. Once you have your groups.io group set up, return to the bookmarked page. Click on the big green button at the bottom that says "Start New Transfer." 7. Enter the name of your Yahoo group and the name of your groups.io group. Do NOT enter any domain information (i.e.: leave off @yahoogroups.com or @yahoogroups.co.uk), just the group names. 8. Click the big green "Start Group Transfer Process" button at the bottom of the page. =(You have now completed Step 1 of the instructions)= 9. Go to your YAHOO GROUP (not your groups.io group) and log in. Send a membership invitation to both [email protected] and another email address available to you and not registered with Yahoo. Check the email for the second address you invited to confirm Yahoo actually sent an invitation. If the second address doesn't receive the invitation, transfer probably didn't either, so repeat this step. 9B. If after several attempts you are unable to get an invitation sent to the transfer address and your second address, you may need to contact [email protected] and explain that you appear to be unable to send an invitation, and include your Yahoo group and groups.io group names. Support may be able to send a request for membership to get around the obstacle. If this is necessary, go to step 11 and look for a membership request, which you need to approve. =(You have now completed Step 2 of the instructions)= 10. BE PATIENT. Accepting the invitation could take several days, and requires human intervention (solving a CAPTCHA). You DID send the invitation from your Yahoo group, didn't you? 11. You will eventually receive an email stating that the membership has been accepted. =(You have now completed Step 3 of the instructions)= 12. Return to your YAHOO GROUP and log in. Promote "[email protected]" to a Moderator. 13. Now return to the groups.io page that you bookmarked in #4 above. Pull down the menu at bottom right and select the group you're ready to transfer. Tell groups.io to start the transfer. =(You have now completed Step 4 of the instructions)= 14. BE PATIENT. The ability to actually do the transfer depends on how well Yahoo's servers are operating. We all know what that means, right? 15. BE EVEN MORE PATIENT. You may notice activity in your new groups.io group, which may reflect partial completion of the process. Do not obsess about this. 16. When the transfer is done, you will receive an email from the transfer agent summarizing what it was able to transfer. It will also list whatever things it was not able to transfer. Until this email is received, you aren't done yet. 17. Rejoice. Most of us have "been there" with this process before and it all sounds easy in hindsight. Ironically, the same thing that's causing most people to abandon Y!G (server downtime) is exactly the same thing most likely to get in the way of completing the transfer process. The best time to initiate a transfer is when Yahoo is performing well. If you procrastinate until things are crashing and burning, delays, incomplete transfers, and other such frustrations can be expected. I'm not Groups.io management, but I agree. I've linked to it from GMF's Wiki page: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups I added a list for links to helpful messages. Please feel free to nominate (or add) more links to GMF or beta messages, or other public sources. Fleshing out that page is still on my "todo" list. Re: Moderating Files & Photos?
Tom,
If you have Files set to "subscribers can view, moderators can?upload" there is still an "Upload file" button when you click on the Files tab.? If you click on it, it takes you through the upload file procedure, but when you click "Add" you are returned to the home page with a message at the top saying "You do not have permission to access that page." ?If that is the case, then why is the upload button there? ?(The upload button does not appear in the Photos section if it is set to the same permission level.) What I would like to do is "moderate" Files and Photos, requiring a moderator to approve them before posting. Is there a way to moderate File and Photos? Nope. But it has been discussed in beta@ (along with moderation for other areas of the group). Hi,
When we with to do a Direct Add of a new member to one or our subgroups, we go to the Main group, select Direct Add and fill in the info, including checking the box for the subgroup to which we want them added.? This causes the member to get two emails.? One for being added to the Main subgroup (which we'd like to turn off but that doesn't seem possible), and one for being added to the desired subgroup.? I have established one "Direct Add" user notice in the Main group with text explaining to ignore that email.? I have a "Direct Add" user notice set up in the desired subgroup to actually welcome the new member.?? The problem is that that the text from the Main group winds up in both emails and the text established for the desired subgroup doesn't get sent at all? ?!!??? Is this a bug or the designed behavior?? If it's the way it was intended behavior do I need to not use the subgroup check box on the add to Main and then do a 2nd Direct Add from the desired subgroup in order to get the emails to the member correct?? Some other solution? Thanks -- Dan |
