When I went back to Y!G to see if he was still a member there on
transfer day, he wasn't. But the strange part is that he doesn't show
up in the activity logs as leaving or being banned or forcibly
removed.. looking back 3 years! Yet, he was a thorn in many
other members' sides up until quite recently.

How about change of email address?

In the membership tab of the Y!Group's activity log, search for whatever email address you have for him. If that turns up a "Member changed email address" entry, search again for the new address. Repeat until you don't find any additional email addresses for that member.

You may find that he's still a member of the group under a changed address, or that he unsubscribed under a changed address.

If not that, then I don't know. Dysfunction of the Activity Logs is another possibility.

If I understand correctly, this same problem pre-existed in the Yahoo group...the transfer simply brought it to light. In that sense, it's no different from people who landed on "no email" delivery only to later start bouncing, complaining, etc....

Depending on how you look at it, it's an annoying inconvenience, or an opportunity to perform housecleaning that perhaps should have been done a long time ago. Either way, it doesn't strike me as a serious shortcoming of the existing GIO platform.

Dano's mention of risks in this is may be understated.

A general ability to re-assign ownership of member contributions could easily lead to all sorts of abuse, and probably also bad consequences from even innocent intentions. Starting with the TOS' requirement that the uploading member have the right to upload the material. If you can no longer tell who uploaded it...

Ok, there is an obvious mitigation for that -- the fact that Mark would very likely include such changes in the group's Activity Log.

Another mitigation, visible to members, could be an "Edited" badge next to the "By" - similar to the Edited badge used when message content is edited. Instead of a revision list, this badge could simply have a hover text showing the original "By" attribution.

To further limit the possibility for abuse there could also be the requirement that the original "By" attribution be (tied to) an email address which is not confirmed in Groups.io's account records. That would limit it to cases like these items that belonged to former members of the Yahoo Group, or current members who had content tied to a dead email address.

They INITIALLY could, but a little over a year ago Yahoo made some
changes so if you were NOT subscribed with a Yahoo email address then
you could NOT go to the Yahoo site to see pictures, change email
status etc.

It has always been the case that using the web pages to control one's subscription requires being signed in to Yahoo. But that is not the same as being subscribed to a group with a Yahoo Mail address. And that's been a FAQ on the moderator help groups forever, because Yahoo did such a terrible job of making group join a clear and simple process.

It has also always been the case that a group member with no Yahoo account whatsoever can control their subscription through the use of email commands.


Note that I had to resort to the wayback machine to dig up that help page. I can't imagine why it has been removed from the current help system - all the email commands still work. Including the the only briefly documented ones:
groupname-traditional @ yahoogroups.com
groupname-fullfeatured @ yahoogroups.com

The majority of my subscribers were NOT yahoo email people.

That's still true of myself and the majority of the members of my groups still at Yahoo. The ID I use to manage my Y!Groups does not have an active Yahoo Mail address.

You don't remember correctly.? ?We? started our? group before the groups were merged into Yahoo, around 2000.
There has never been a time when a member could not change their delivery either by an email command or by? going to their subscription online and changing it.

I'd? like to be sure you understand that at? Yahoo, not only you could set no email for members,
there was a simply email command that allowed any member to set their own account to no email.
If the intent is to allow members to temporarily opt out of receiving messages,?
set the group setting to? allow no email, let your members know about it and provide them with the simple email command,
"[email protected]"
Then they can dropout and into receiving email as many times as they wish and you don't have to? track them.
But? if you do wish? to track them you can always download membership file whenever you wish.
I save it each time I do as a .csv file and use? excel to review, sort, etc.

One of MANY changes they made that caused problems, ESPECIALLY for people who were subscribed to my yahoo groups WITHOUT subscribing under a yahoo email address. I assumed it was to FORCE members to get a yahoo email address. The majority of my subscribers were NOT yahoo email people.

Notices" won't do the same thing.

Because "a few" notices is not the same as No Email.

I think in some cases the issue was a moderator's perceived over-use of the Special Notices feature. For example, sending routine announcements or periodic reminders as Special Notices.

I can't imagine how I would have communicated the move to Groups.io
without Special Notices.

Special Notices get posted like any other group message. So those members on No Email ought to see it there.

I would of had a potential 200 people on No Mail.

As has been mentioned in other threads, in the specific case of a transfer from Yahoo! Groups, beware the members on No Email.

There was a long period where all means for a member to unsubscribe were failing - both web and -unsubscribe email. The failure left the individual still on the group's Manage Members list, and still receiving group messages, but further attempts to unsubscribe gave a "not a member" error. The common advice became to go No Email first, before attempting to unsubscribe, just in case. The other advice was for the moderator to ban the person, as that seemed to work regardless.

In one group I helped transfer over a No Email member, who hadn't posted in the Yahoo Group for many years, suddenly "woke up" after the transfer and promptly posted a mini-tirade berating the group owners.

Lesson learned: before transferring a Yahoo Group put all No Email members on Moderation override. Some of them may be disgruntled but previously unable to unsubscribe.

I always set my memberships here to Special Notices, so I won't miss something important.? Some owners don't seem to quite get the gist of Special Notice and send them frequently.? In that case, I'd go to No Email.? In the 17 years I've been a group owner, here and Y!, I've sent a total of 2!

Duane is correct. In Y!Groups there is no means for a group to prevent members from selecting No Email. I don't know why you think you remember doing that, but members could always change it for themselves.
