Re: Integration with Google Calendar #calendar

I believe calendar is one way.? However, you can go to Admin > Settings in your group, scroll way down to the Features section, and disable Calendar to remove it from the menu.

RSS Feed Integration Questions #integration

Michael Rickey (AF6FB)

I have a couple of questions about the RSS Feed Integration. Is there a place I can find more details? I searched the wiki, but could only find a reference to the integration.

How often does the system look for updates to the feed?
If I remove a post from my blog, will groups.io remove the topic?
If I update a post from my blog, will groups.io update the topic? Will it create a new topic?
Does the integration make local (to groups.io) copies of images? Does it reference the images from the blog URL?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
I did a tutorial at a group meeting today, and first, wanted to let you all know how wonderful my group thinks Groups.io is, especially compared to Yahoo!?
Here's my question: We emphasize using Reply to Sender and Private in replying so we can keep email inundation to a minimum. A member asked today how they could message another member directly (but still in groups.io), and I couldn't find the answer. Can you direct me?

Re: Integration with Google Calendar #calendar

I would like to have the groups.io calendar pull from a Google calendar as well. We are already entrenched in the Google ecosystem and changing now would be a challenge.

If we can't have this, is there a way to remove "Calendar" from the menu for my group?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Bulk Download of files

Brian,

(For example, we might be having a discussion which involves the
review of several documents at a time.)
In Groups.io, for some purposes, the Wiki might be a better choice than the Files section. For example that might be true if the files are formatted text (like a message) and the result of review would be a round of revisions. A wiki page can be edited on site, and includes change tracking.

I just wanted to check I hadn't missed something before I go
through the process on the Beta group.
That's what we're here for (one of the things, anyway). ;-)

It took overnight, but the Google calendar did update to include events added to the Groups.io calendar after the initial connection was made.

Re: Bulk Download of files

Thx, Shal. I just wanted to check I hadn't missed something before I go through the process on the Beta group.

The FILES section is especially important to the Groups I look after. It would be especially useful to the Moderators to be able to download more than a single file at a time. (For example, we might be having a discussion which involves the review of several documents at a time.)

Brian.

There isn't an automated way equivalent to Yahoo or Google groups, but
[email protected] can probably help you.

Re: Member Mad that she got Unsubbed

AOL marks a lot of messages submitted through Groups.io groups as Spam.

?

IF the user will simply look through their email and mark them as not being spam, that will resolve the problem of being unsubbed when all Spam is deleted.

?

As well, when spam is deleted and a person is unsubscribed to your group, when this action happens, they will receive a link to click on and be back in the group again.

They also have filters that "recognize" nasty words.? Our genetic disease is Fuchs'.? Not hard to imaging how yahoo sometimes freaks out with that.
She will just have to start checking her spam folder.
She would have received a special message from groups,.io that this was happening and that message has a magic autoenroll link that's active for 3 days after being unsubscribed.
That last is something no other service does.
Hopefully she will remember to check her spam folder after you reenroll her.

How about change of email address?

In the membership tab of the Y!Group's activity log, search for whatever email address you have for him. If that turns up a "Member changed email address" entry, search again for the new address. Repeat until you don't find any additional email addresses for that member.

You may find that he's still a member of the group under a changed address, or that he unsubscribed under a changed address.

If not that, then I don't know. Dysfunction of the Activity Logs is another possibility.

Actually, a person who is not in any group on any site, but understands the dynamic came up with the most likely solution: the member just totally deleted his Yahoo groups account. Yahoo wouldn't send out a 'left the group' message for a member that no longer exists in their computers. I was told 'Think like a computer, not like a human, and it all makes more sense.'

Transfer for Lyris List Manager #transfer

We have a few discussion groups that are currently run on a private Lyris service. ?These are reasonably sized.ists ?(two thousand members per list, perhaps). ?We have an archive that¡¯s many years old, and still quite historic and useful.

Is there a way to transfer these lists here to groups.io?

TIA

No on 1 and 2.?

On 3, sort of. You can (by hand) rotate a banner, but one that appears only at the top of the Messages page, by creating wiki pages and rotating which one is used as the ¡®Sticky Wiki.¡¯ The first several lines of whichever wiki page you pick as the Sticky Wiki will show up as s banner, but not on the site as a whole, just on the Messages page. Also, all of the wiki pages (and thus all of the ads) would always be visible at all times by users by clicking on them. The only rotation would be in terms of which one is used as a banner.

We have subscribers who pay to promote their businesses on the posts and this is an important feature of our list

Paula,

1) Is there any way to edit the text of a file in group.io, ...
As Duane said, no. But if the file is something you'll want to update on an ongoing basis you might want to use the group's wiki instead of a file. Wiki pages are edited with an interface that is very similar to message composition.

Re: Bulk Download of files

Brian,

Is there a facility to download multiple files within the FILES
section?
None that I'm aware of. Something to suggest in the beta group perhaps.

This would be _very_ handy for backup purposes.
Mark has said that his plan is to allow group mods to download the complete set of content from their group. But as yet only the Members list and the Messages have a download ability. Come to think of it, the calendar too, via it's .ics URL.

But that's somewhat different than your question - those downloads are available only to mods/owners. And are complete content, not selected content.

Re: Integration with Google Calendar #calendar

Hi,

Can the groups.io calendar be automatically synced with the google
calendar or the reverse where the google calendar updates the
groups.io calendar?
You can have events from the Groups.io group's calendar import to a Google calendar. At the bottom of the Groups.io calendar page is a blue "Subscribe to Calendar" button. Click that and copy the URL it gives you. Then in the Google calendar click "Add a friend's calendar" and select "From URL".

However, I'm not entirely sure that isn't a one-time import. That is, I don't know if Google refreshes by reading that URL periodically, or ever. My brief attempts to test this suggests that Google doesn't re-read the .ics file, even when you click on the logo to refresh the calendar.

I don't know if there's a way to have events in the Google calendar update the Groups.io calendar.

Related, maybe:

What are the options to embed the groups.io calendar into a website
for the public to view events ...
You can set the calendar to "Public", even if your group's Messages are private. Which means that you can put a link to it on the website, or with some greater effort maybe use an iFrame to embed it in the other website.

... and allow members of the public to subscribe to the calendar and
only the calendar so they can integrate it with their mobile device
calendars but not have accounts in the group or have any access to
anything else as our group is private.
The .ics file named by the URL (above) can be accessed without logon to Groups.io. That should allow the public to import your group's events.
