Re: Transfer Group from Yahoo

Mindy,

Really the notice goes to everyone regardless of email setting? That's
great! We are discussing what to do with the many "no email" members
we have.
Yes. It isn't sent through the normal Group Message processing. Member Notices are sent as direct messages to each affected member (in this case, each address copied from the Yahoo Group).

This is a YG question - but is there a way to set up an auto reply
("We have moved, come visit us at...") so we don't have to keep
checking the YG page and sending back this response to those who
continue to post to YG?
Alas, not that I know of. I plan to draft a message and just keep it on my computer for ease of copy/paste to the Reject with reply box.

(based on past changes, this will be a big issue for us
unfortunately).
I don't know how many "stragglers" I'll get from the current groups. I had very few with the two groups I moved last fall. But then all of the groups I'm talking about have only a few hundred members, and only a handful that post regularly - these having all atrophied a bit in the last few years at Yahoo. Hoping for revival. So far one for two with increasing member participation.

We don't really want to disallow posting, at least for awhile. We have
many older members to whom the group is an important way to feel
connected to our community, but they seem to struggle with details.
I feel much the same way about these groups. I never have fully disallowed posting in the Yahoo Groups; posting there dropped to near zero pretty quickly after the transfer.

Re: Q: posts during the transfer/welcome message/size to save attachments?

Mindy,

By "post to the group after" - how does that work? Would the post on
the GIO show as coming from the member?
I had in mind asking the member to post it him/herself, so that it would properly show as coming from him/her.

This was on the theory that there would not be very many messages "stranded" on the Yahoo Group. In the case of one of mine that just completed, none were.

In other words, I got lucky despite a trickle of messages coming through after I had said "Go" but before I locked down the Yahoo Group. The other approach would have been to lock down the Yahoo Group before saying go, but with it possibly being several days I didn't want to stop things for that long.

(The only way I can think of is to copy and forward the messages from
a moderator account)
But then, as you suspect, it would post as being from that moderator.

Deleting folders #files

Matty Smith

As the owner of a Groups.io, I can see the trash can beside files and therefore delete them - even where I did not create them.
However, other members of the group, whom I have upgraded to ¡®owner¡¯ status, cannot see the trash can.?
Can the deletion rights on files be changed?
Thanks you
Matty

No, the moderator didn't send an invitation. I just sent an email to our SUBSCRIBE email with my test email acct. Once I got the PENDING MEMBERSHIP message, I replied to it. My moderator got that email, but I did not.

I think you want to select "Listed in directory, private archives."? If you choose one that says "public archives", anyone can read the messages, even if they're not a member of the group, like here on GMF.? Being listed in the directory allows people to search the available groups to find yours.

Group Moderator

Yes that's what I meant, deal with each email on its own. But based on how many people STILL send posts to "mygroup-owner@..." we know there will be many many posts still sent to the YG group. If there was a way to set up an auto-response - like a vacation response - will save us alot of time. And hair-pulling ;) Any way to do that?

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your response, I still don't understand.
I am now at privacy/visibility and then listed in directory, publicity viewable archives
Must I put there listed in directory private archives or not listed in directory private archives.?
What to set in member directory ?
Thanks

Not true. You can approve at any time.

Short answer: yes, you do have to wait until owner/moderator receives the "Re: Your pending subscription to the XXXXX group on Groups.IO" message before approving.

This is why I have requested the capability for new subscribers to include required info in their initial email to the group's +subscribe address. The Pending Member Notice is really not the ideal way to handle requests for additional subscriber information. Each email back-and-forth is an opportunity for things to go awry. Then owner/moderator is faced with additional tasks of keeping track of additional people on the "Pending Approval" list who for whatever reason do not respond with the required info; then we have to send followup emails requesting the information again, etc. And finally remove them from the Pending Approval list after a month or so of no response.

Shal,

Have you noticed the up tick in Message History since December? Must be related to transfers from other places to Groups.IO.

At the same time, as the owner of the group, I received a "Subscription
Approval Needed" email. I replied to that to approve the membership, kind
of wondering why I hadn't received the "Pending Subscription" message yet.
1 minute later, I received my group's "Welcome" message to the alternate

the group).
AFTER that, by about 2-3 minutes, I received a "Your pending membership"
message, asking me to tell a little about myself so that I might be
approved.
Obviously the order of things is screwed up here. Do I need to just tell my
moderator (the guy that approves all the pending subscriptions) to simply
wait until he receives the "pending membership" message response to approve
the membership request? Or is something wrong with the send order of the
messages?
Also, I notice that the "pending membership" message comes from (more
importantly, will go to) the "[email protected]" email address. Will
the MODERATOR receive this message, or just me as the owner?

someone who unsubscribes then is able to resubscribe without my permission

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

My group just recently was transferred (almost 2,000) from yahoo to groups.io.? So I¡¯ve spent the last few hours cleaning up problems, most of which I made myself.? For example, I removed the ¡®first two posts moderated¡¯ rule and allowed all to immediately post.? If I was to do it over, I certainly wouldn¡¯t remove that option (something those of you in the process of transferring might take into consideration).? What has happened is members mail boxes have been flooded with ¡°I¡¯m just testing¡¯ types of messages which when you have 2,000 members can be overwhelming.

Here is my question for the gurus¡ªwith yahoo if someone unsubscribed themselves then they could NOT get resubscribed unless I approved the process.? With groups.io I just had a member who had unsubscribed be able to just resubscribe herself (based on the message I got from groups.io).? Is this normal?? I¡¯m not saying it is necessary a BAD situation as I haven¡¯t had a chance to check it out, namely to be sure she wasn¡¯t ¡®moderated¡¯ then came back on and wasn¡¯t.? So, is there a setting I can change (as I didn¡¯t see one) that addresses what happens when someone unsubscribes then wants back on?

For what it is worth.? The canned message that goes to people AFTER the transfer makes it too easy¡ªin my opinion¡ªto ¡®unsubscribe¡¯¡ªI lost a LOT of subscribers who just didn¡¯t read the info I sent to them BEFORE the transfer.? I added my OWN wording in the space I was allowed to add, but I couldn¡¯t change the ¡®canned groups.io¡¯ wording so I also had a lot of people go directly TO the groups.io page and things REALLY got confusing to them as they thought they had to subscribe again and misinterpreted the cover page thinking they could use hashtags (I have that function unavailable to members right now) wiki (also disabled right now) etc and when they couldn¡¯t they sent me one of hundreds of emails I¡¯ve gotten this morning.

All in ALL I would STILL make the switch from Yahoo to Groups.io WITHOUT a doubt.? Just saying it COULD have been a little smoother for me¡ªbut based on future potential with what my members can now do that they couldn¡¯t on Yahoo AND the fact I can ACTUALLY get owner/moderator help, this move was a no-brainer.? I feel VERY fortunate this venue was available for a replacement to Yahoo.? THANKS to all you on this site who are so helpful.

This chrono order situation actually does seem to be some sort of problem. I even posted on beta about a weird situation yesterday where a member received and clicked on his "confirm" email before I received the pending subscription notice. Hours went by and i did not receive the notification. Only after the member confirmed did I receive it.
?
More to the point of this thread, the Pending Subscription Member Notice is sometimes not received at all by the person requesting membership. This has been an ongoing problem in my group for a long, long time and one that I've posted about here, in beta, and to Mark at support. Some of you here may remember it, and I know that at least one other member here, someone who recently moved from Y!G (although I can't remember who at the moment), has expressed having the same problem.

Any idea why I wouldn't have received the "owner" email (the response to my "pending subscription" message, that is)? I waited about 10-15 minutes for it before checking on the website.? I *much* prefer to do everything through email rather than have to logon to the website.

Re: Transfer Group from Yahoo

I set my old group to "Moderated" after our transfer.? By doing that, I don't have to check YG at all.? If anyone tries to post or to subscribe, I will get a message that my approval is required. That way I can communicate directly with the sender.
