Re: Do message #'s stay the same when you transfer from Y!?

Unfortunately, I don't believe the numbers stay the same, but I haven't moved posts so can't be sure.

As far as I've seen, there's no limit to the number of posts transferred. There's one group with over 200,000 that were moved over.

Oddly enough I had reason to search back in my group archives recently. They go back to 1999 so even before Yahoo groups took over. What surprised me was that although the posts are numbered they are not in numerical order but in places randomly organised.

Is there a limit to the number of posts that can be transferred I was wondering?

Re: Member has joined but no confirmation email sent

You should be able to find her original email address in your membership list (listed as NC?), click on her info, and send her a new confirmation email (link at the bottom). I think that will allow her to use the original email address.

Re: Member has joined but no confirmation email sent

Thanks Duane and Shal.

It seems what has happened is that either she didn't get the confirmation email or deleted it by accident, without activating the account(?).?I didn't have her check the trash and should be flogged for that sloppiness.

Now she "can't" activate it, so she joined with her husband's gmail account. . ?

She has activated that account so I guess all is good, but what if this problem crops up again? ?Is there a way to re-send an activate account email? ?

Is there a way she can un-register the hotmail email address from Groups.io and then re-register it so she doesn't have to use her husband's email? ?Or would it just be easier to have her change the email addy in her profile?

Re: Member has joined but no confirmation email sent

LeeAnne,

A member is not receiving email from groups.io. A search for her email
addy in the members section did not show her as a member yesterday but I
flipped through and found her manually.
That's odd all by itself.

Is there any chance of a subtle typo in her email address? That could explain both why search didn't find her and why she's not receiving messages.

Her Email Delivery History says, no email deliveries, no Recent
unsuccessful attempts, no bounces -
That's also odd if there have been messages posted in the group recently, and after she joined. The only things I can think of which might account for that would be having her Email Delivery set to "Special Notice" or "No Email", or under Advanced Preferences having her Message Selection set to "Following Only" with no threads followed.

even though I sent, and she received, her an email this morning using the
groups.io email from the web.
I don't think those are bounce-tracked, only group postings.

They undoubtedly ought to be. Also the various notifications moderators get ought to be bounce-tracked, but aren't as far as I know.

I tried deleting the membership and had her try again but she was told
the email was already registered.
That means her email address is associated with a Groups.io account, but it doesn't mean that she is (or is not) a member of your group. As Duane said, now she needs to join the group, but does not need to re-confirm her email address.

Assuming she's typing her address correctly on the web interface.

Re: Member has joined but no confirmation email sent

It sounds to me like she's trying to create a new account on groups.io I'd send her a link to the group home page and ask her to click on the Join button there to see what happens. If that still doesn't work, I'm at a loss.

I see! And that makes sense (now) to me. I'm running a bit on empty this week,? but i wonder if additional language might be needed there. If it wasn't clear to me that the advanced settings dictated what was in the digest, then chances are i'm going to be getting many many emails from members asking the same question.

I wonder if the language in advanced settings can be made clearer? It should be fool proof (with me being the fool today)

And in that case, I'm kinda preferring the "follow" mechanism is a bit buried until our userbase gets used to this as I'd hate for someone to click "follow" and then it changes their digest setting to only send them that topic? ( am i still not getting this? )

Re: How do you "follow" threads?

Maria,

- if you follow a thread or hashtag and you have your subscription
set to daily digest - does this mean you get BOTH individual emails
for that thread AND you also see them in digest?
No.

- why is the mechanism to follow a hashtag/thread buried in the ALL
MESSAGES section of your groups and not within the group?
I'm with Duane, I think that's an oversight in the implementation.

Ok - thanks, I'll bring it up in @beta.

You should only get one or the other, depending on your subscription settings. Anything else would be a glitch in the system.

- why is the mechanism to follow a hashtag/thread buried in the ALL MESSAGES
section of your groups and not within the group?
I think you may have stumbled across an inconsistency. I would also think the links for following/muting should be on each message page. I'd ask support@ or on beta@. Chances are that Mark got sidetracked during the development of this part of the interface and forgot to carry it over to other pages. Or maybe he didn't even consider it at the time. I'm often amazed at how many things he "fixes" in a short time, so there are bound to be little things that get overlooked.

Re: How do you "follow" threads?

I have other questions about following threads/hashtags:

- if you follow a thread or hashtag and you have your subscription set to daily digest - does this mean you get BOTH individual emails for that thread AND you also see them in digest? This is unclear to me (i'm testing but was hoping someone might have an answer)

- why is the mechanism to follow a hashtag/thread buried in the ALL MESSAGES section of your groups and not within the group? In other words, if i'm reading in @beta, and i see a great thread i am interested in, why do i have to go out of @beta, go to all my groups, click on all messages, find the message, then select the follow this thread button? Doesn't that seem like a lot of work? In a typical forum, wouldn't you just click something on the message when you are in the forum itself?

Only send special notices to a select group of members?
You can do that to. You can sort the Members list by Delivery, checkmark the select members, then use the Actions menu to send them a message. This isn't a special notice, per se, but it goes to the selected members regardless of their subscription options.

When you do that you may want to change the From to the +owner address, and Bcc either "Me" or "All Moderators".

Thank you Shal! That's very helpful info.

Re: Questions about Group Transfer and settings

Maria,

1- Any advice how to handle those who are set to "No Email" or "Special
notice" in an existing Y! group? If they don't get emails but they send
emails to the group by email, what's a good way to remind them of the
new email address and new login URL?
When Mark adds them to Groups.io he sends a notification to all of them, regardless of delivery preference. So they'll get at least that much.

Should we temporarily switch them to daily digest? so they are prompted
to login and adjust their settings - we don't want that to prompt
unsubscriptions though...
Mark also copies their subscription options, so they may not need to adjust them.

or should we send them special notices from the new groups.io platform -
can we do that?
You can. That's an option in "New Topic".

Only send special notices to a select group of members?

2- Does the transfer also transfer the member's Yahoo! ID/Alias/Profile name?
Not sure. I haven't yet transferred a group, hopefully someone who has can answer.

If they don't login for a while but start replying to posts via digest
or email - what do we see as their screen name/ profile on the web
interface?
If they haven't set a Display Name in their profile yet, then Groups.io will initialize their Display name from the display portion of the From address in their email (the part in front of the <user@...>). If their message doesn't have a display part (has just the bare user@...) I'm not sure what happens, but I suspect their email address is shown.

Questions about Group Transfer and settings

I'm sure i'll have more questions but would love some thoughts on these.

Thank you!

Re: database columns - arrows (up/down) not doing anything

I think I'd consider it a bug. SO far, I've only used that choice for Yes/No type things, so not too critical yet.

Re: database columns - arrows (up/down) not doing anything

It sounds like you're doing it right, but it might depend on the type of data you have the column set for. It doesn't seem to sort correctly on Single Select Multiple Choice. The others that I've used do, but I haven't tried all of them.
