Pending message stay in owner box even after they have been approved

Thank you all for your help and patience with our questions.? Our group just switched from only one reply option to all options available and its been a chaotic week as I learn the system and people respond to the change. All the messages that I approve and that are for "reply to group" are accumulating in my pending mail box. Can you direct me to the setting where I can have them go away once they are approved? Thanks.

Re: Can a member decide not to receive ¡°reply to group¡± messages?

As Malcolm mentioned, there are options.

Individuals can use their Advanced Preferences ... tick "Following only" and the inset "First message also".

Re: Massive Bouncing Members Conundrum

I'm pretty sure that the date shown for Bouncing accounts is the date the most recent Bounce Probe was sent by the system. I would wait at least until the badge turns Red (Bounced). At this point the system has sent probes every 3 or 4 days for at least 2 weeks. If the group member hasn't responded by this time they are probably no longer interested in being in the group or their address is no longer valid.

I check my groups periodically for bounces and delete those that never respond. It is rare that there are more than a handful at any one time. When we moved over from Yahoo there were quite a few bouncing addresses that ended up being deleted, but since then there have only been a few from time to time.

There are two stages of bouncing:
* a soft bounce where Groups.io has had an issue delivering an email but is in the process of retrying and this is denoted by a blue B badge on the member list
* a hard bounce where Groups.io has reached the limit if its retries and stopped trying to send messages to a member altogether; denoted by a red B badge on the member list
Hovering your mouse pointer over those badges will show a pop-up stating when a particular bouncing state was entered:
In addition, you can also view the member record and display the Activity History for that member. The Activity Log will contain entries which show when an account has entered or left a bouncing state. You can see on this example from GMF (read from the bottom up) that a member subscribed and then went through the bouncing stages.? Duane has twice sent a bounce probe to this member but the account is still in a bouncing state:
Now my question is, do I just delete all of the "bounced" members, as technically they're not actually members anymore?
Bouncing refers to email delivery so there's a chance that those members may still be viewing messages online. I know a bounced member gets a prompt to un-bounce their account when they login to the Groups.io site but I believe they can still read messages anyway.? Whether you remove them or not comes down to how you wish to operate your group. If you have guidelines that state that hard bouncing members will be removed after a period of time then it would be reasonable to do so.? As in the example above, you could start by sending them a 'bounce probe' to see if it has any effect.
You can send multiple bounce probes at one time by filtering the member list by those in a bouncing state, selecting all the members on the list and then selecting Send Bounce Probe from the Actions button:
As you have lots of bouncing members, I'd recommend that you set your Items per Page to Infinite Scroll in your account preferences at /settings/prefs This will allow you to scroll to the bottom of the list before selecting everyone and using the Actions button.? If you use the Groups.io app, the default is Infinite Scroll on the member list anyway so you would not need to change your preferences.

mailto-links are widely considered bad practice. They only work when the person is on his/her own computer, and even if they are it may activate an email-program that they are not even using.

Keep in mind that bounced members still can access the website for messages if the group is private. They don¡¯t get any email but they still have that access.

?

I don¡¯t know if it is possible to tell if bounced members are using the web access as a way of knowing they shouldn¡¯t be deleted. Also you can always trigger a bounce test for the users.

Re: Massive Bouncing Members Conundrum

I believe that Bouncing members can still access the messages via the web based version of the group.? If people were set to Special Messages they may already be in the habit of reading on-line.

Hi Andy,
?
Hadn't noticed that before, checked membership list & it says we have 6,171 members, while our group homepage shows 2,978 members.
So, I'm guessing that none of the 3,193 bounced receive anything from the group, and there is no way to ascertain if they're?still bouncing,
if they were bounced some time ago.?

Now my question is, do I just delete all of the "bounced" members, as technically they're not actually members anymore?

Re: Daily Summary email delivery issue?

Thanks everyone - I'm also now hearing that summaries are being received again, just at unusual times. A digest went out for us at midnight last night, although it normally got sent at 6 AM before.

I'm not sure if I'd report it as a bug or a question, but that's where it would be done.? Maybe Mark has changed the time for summaries to be sent out.? It could also be related to the 'fix' he made for something else, so a real bug.

Re: Daily Summary email delivery issue?

I see that a Daily Summary for both of the groups I help moderate went out just after midnight this morning. ?To clarify the message that went out just after midnight was 42 hours after the prior daily summary? - at least for me in EDT.? ?For me, they did not include the activity for the 18th of March that would have been included in the usual morning summary at 6am but it gets us back on track.? I appreciate the help and the affirmation with comments by others that we were not the only ones impacted.?
?
I am not an IT subject matter expert but used the tools that I am familiar with to check what I could before posting the question to this group.? I checked activity logs to make sure there were new messages to generate a Daily Summary.? One of my groups can sometimes go a day or so with no messages so if there were no new messages I would let them know there wasn't a daily summary.?
?
I also checked "email delivery status" when the first person who asked.? The way I checked that was go to member page (drop down from their name or searing in member list) for the person reporting the issue.? First check their email settings - to make sure they hadn't changed them, confirming they were set for Daily Summary.? Then I checked email delivery history - from the drop down under their name.? Did they get a daily summary with a message like "OK" or "Queued for delivery"?? That should mean they should have gotten morning email if it indicated "delivered", "OK" or "queued for delivery" or similar I would have advised the member to check spam folder because email providers/clients can change their spam rules any time.? If they found the message in spam I would suggest they mark "not spam" immediately so as not to jeopardize future deliveries.? ?In this case there was record of any mail deliveries nor any bouncing status for the people I spot checked, including me and another moderator.? I checked folks on multiple time zones in US and saw no one set for "daily summary" had any delivery or any rejected delivery.??
?
Frank, I hope my description helps with your question on troubleshooting.

Not without providing their email address.
?
Some folks use the "promote" code found at https: //groups.io/g/GROUPNAME/promote and put that on their web site. But they will have to type in their email address, either manually or by autofill. [Note: Typos when using this code are a significant source of bogus accounts that languish in "Not Confirmed" status.]
?
A "mailto:" link to the +subscribe address automatically populates their email address, but also launches their email program. They don't have to type anything, but do have to send the message. Still, I have found this to be the easiest way.?
?
You can also just provide a link to the group home page and ask them to click the join button when they get there. If already logged in to groups.io, they won't have to enter an email address. If not, they will be prompted for one.
?
The only way to provide one-click signup is to send them an invitation.

Bruce?

I did a little digging this morning.? It seems that summaries are being sent at a different time now.? I found a range of 6-18 hours from previous deliveries.? This may need to be posted as a #bug on the beta group.

you can check your account bounces via your account settings at /settings/bounces. You can also check details related to individual groups you are subscribed to via Subscription > Delivery History.? Remember, messages in the Response and Reason columns are what Groups.io receives from your mail provider.
