Re: What is a subgroup
Perfect, this is the info I wanted, I think one of my old groups will better function as a subgroup, so I won¡¯t bother to transfer it over, just add folks into the subgroup.

Or is it possible to just have the emails of the group members transferred over and put directly into a subgroup? As in ¡°Transfer Group X, but make it a subgroup of Group Y¡± Barb On Feb 2, 2018, at 10:22 PM, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: |
Re: Messages from pending members
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Margaret,
I set up such a notice to go out to my group.? Since we have group rules applicants need to agree to as well I set it up with a Reason for joining and Group Rules.? We are a highly restricted group due to the group being of an illness nature.
To do this, on the left sidebar after you click on Admin, then click settings, member notices,? then select message type from the drop down arrow.? You type in your message and make it active.? Then whenever anyone applies for membership that message should go out to them, that is if you make it pending subscription.
Or at least that is my understanding for that function.

As a relatively new owner of a groups.io group but a long time owner of a YahooGroup, both with restricted memberships, I have noticed that for people wanting to join a groups.io there is no "Reason for joining" message as in YahooGroups. Is such a feature
not available in groups.io or have I missed something?

Re: Messages from pending members
I gather this is on the wish list..... In our case where my groups are
restricted to membership of our society a little box where they could say who they were so we can cross check our membership records would be useful. If we cannot recognise them by their email address it sometimes involves quite a lot of email interchange before we can approve (or otherwise). Re: Facebook Integration
Thanks Duane,
On re-reading Facebook "Page" is specifically mentioned, rather than Facebook "Group" or Facebook "Timeline". Facebook Pages contain mainly "announcement" entries - so a one-way flow from Facebook to Groups IO makes sense¡ -- ______________________________________ ? Ian Gillis C Eng MIET |

I try to rotate the photo on our homepage. I was just thinking how nice it would be to have that photo (usually a member¡¯s handmade item) at the top of the daily digest.

Facebook Integration
I run a Facebook group on a subject related to the subject of one of my Groups IO groups.
What does Facebook Integration offer? Is it just the one-way display of a Facebook post in Groups IO? Or is there a reverse path so that Groups IO comments on the post are reflected back to Facebook? |
Re: Transfer Invite Failed
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýOur group completely moved out of YG a couple of weeks ago, and we¡¯ve been getting settled into our new home here at Groups.io¡So far no problems. I¡¯m leaving our old YG site up until the end of February, and I left a note on the home page where we moved too. I go to a couple of YG Owner/Moderator forums there just to see what¡¯s up with them, and it¡¯s like you said, one problem fixed and another one pops up. We had our group at YG since 2000, and it worked good for us. Then came along the Neo upgrade, if you could call it that, and we learned to deal with that. Then the Yahoo/Verizon deal came along, and it was down hill after that. It¡¯s to bad that happened, but nothing lasts forever I guess. ? Don FOGgers Owner and Moderator ? I got a response from support who confirm that the information is inaccurate. I have passed this on my associates. Thanks for all your further information. Dave On Feb 2, 2018, at 8:32 PM, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: |
Re: Is this information accurate
Dave,
However this ease of access for messages has a downside; if aThe part about recycling the address is clearly absurd -- Groups.io can't recycle email addresses which it doesn't own. And unlike Yahoo Groups, there is no "house brand" email address forced upon you when you create a Groups.io account. Another tell-tale is "ID" - in Groups.io your login ID is your email address, not some other thing. Then there's all this FUD about having to set up a new account. 1) If you got into this mess by not ever logging in, why do you all of a sudden need a new account? 2) Even if you need one, establishing an account at Groups.io is about as easy typing your email address into a web page, so what's the problem? This overall has the feel of some of the other scare tactic "warnings" I've read lately over in Y!GMF, YGOG, and ListHelp. Shal |
Re: What is a subgroup
Barb,
Another basic question - what is a subgroup and what are pros/cons vsA subgroup is a group whose membership is a subset of a primary group. Moderatrice's example with 2 & 3 being subgroups of 1 is a good example of a situation where the membership naturally has that relationship. An advantage of using a primary group and subgroups is that their email & web addresses have a common element that ties them together. See my example of how this works, here: /g/GroupManagersForum/message/3483 Another advantage of using subgroups is that you (a primary group moderator) have more control over their membership: you don't need to invite people to join the subgroups, once they are members of your primary group you can simply add them to and remove them from subgroups at need. The subgroups also retain the ordinary join/request mechanisms, you can let primary group members join subgroups on their own, or require approval. Another advantage is more control over the visibility of content. A subgroup can share its message archive with members of the primary group without sharing it with the public at large. Note: every owner/mod of the primary group implicitly has owner/mod privileges in all the subgroups. This commonality of management can be either an advantage or disadvantage, depending on the needs of your communities. Shal |
Re: What is a subgroup
Marina,
As for the newsletter, I'll have to create a separate group, becauseDo all members of the main group receive the the newsletter? Or at least most? My thought is to make the newsletter group be the primary group, with 1, 2 & 3 subgroups of it. If there's only relatively few members of 1 who don't want to receive the newsletter, they can go NoEmail in that group. Just a thought. Shal |
