Re: Group transfer questions
Anita,
Another group transfer question: Can Yahoo polls be transferred to aMark hasn't mentioned it, that I'm aware of. It would be a bit tricky as polls in Groups.io are implemented as messages (with features for voting) rather than as a separate section of the group's web site. However, Mark is fond of saying that anything is possible in the wonderful world of computers. So you could post it as a request in beta@ and see if he's game. In the subject of your message I'd suggest adding the hashtags #polls #suggestions #transfer. Shal |

Maria,
I wrote: If you customize the group's Welcome message before the transfer thenAnd, of course, I do plan to send a Special Notice to the Yahoo Group before starting the transfer - perhaps a day or so before, to give the Yahoo Group members a heads-up on what's happening. I'll probably say much the same things as mentioned in the customized Welcome text, but written from the pre-transfer point of view. Note to self: don't forget that Special Notice. Shal |
Re: Group transfer questions
Maria,
So once the group was transferred how did the first new posts startIf you customize the group's Welcome message before the transfer then it will be sent to each member as they are added to the Groups.io group. On the Settings page, see the tab for Member notices, and the sub-tab for the Welcome notice. If you don't customize it then nothing is sent. I customized one of mine by adding this at the top, leaving the default message at the bottom: "Hey folks... We're moving to an alternate email list service, given some of the problems we've been having with Yahoo Groups, and the uncertainties about the future of Yahoo. Our content from the Yahoo Group has been copied here, including Messages, Photos and Files. The Yahoo Group itself has not been affected, and all of our content is still available at Yahoo. Your subscription options (individual messages, digest, etc.) have also been) copied to your subscription here, but you may wish to double-check them by visiting the "Subscription" page (link in the left-hand column). Groups.io also offers advanced subscription options which you may wish to check out. If you have any questions or comments please email me at [email protected] or shal@.... Shal Here's the boilerplate message from the Groups.io service: " In this message I've substituted "example" for the actual group name and email addresses. The default text (that I called "boilerplate") has instructions for sending messages, so I left that in place. One thing to note is that I've not actually transferred that group yet - I'm holding out for Mark to finish the work on being able to transfer Files and Photos as well. Obviously you'd want to say something different if you're not waiting, and not moving the stuff yourself. I'll probably update that text to suit circumstances just before I tell the transfer agent to go. Hmm... it seems our Wiki page on this topic could use some updating and enhancement: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups Shal |
Re: Group transfer questions
Thank you all!? So once the group was transferred how did the first new posts start coming in? Did you tell members the new email address to use for new posts? The new URL to log into?? Whats a good way to educate members about the transition so the discussions don't stop?? Thanks? Maria? |

Re: Group transfer questions
Easy. The instructions are here -?/static/transfer See the specific link at the bottom of the page. Mark transferred my group and later my archives from YahooGroups. I had made sure that members knew it was going to happen and why. I reminded people to change the login email address on their devices. I put a notice on the homepage of the old YahooGroups. (I guess I could delete that now!) The members will be transferred with their email addresses and delivery preferences. If they wish to use your Groups.io homepage, they should create a password. First they get a temporary one by clicking on send me an email link. You should look at editing your homepage on Groups.io, any member notices, etc. under Settings.? There is a little member education needed (at least I thought so). For example, there are better subscription options than Digest. I set my default for new members so they get the first email in any thread. They can individually change that if they wish. And they can add an email alias. All nice features! Good luck, but don't worry!? Frances |

Super easy.? Take a look at the steps at
/static/yahootransfer
Basically, you invite [email protected] to be a member of your YG, then
make it a moderator.?
Your YG group messages (w/o attachments) will be imported also, unless
you say no.
Then Mark does all the work for you!
> did members manage to switch over easily and accept new platform??
Easily.? For a while people were still sending messages to the old group
and getting confused, but that ended when I closed the group to new
messages.? Then they emailed me, and I educated them one by one.
Part of the confusion was I maintained the archives at YG, because
transferring old messages wasn't part of the move back then.? Since the
archives are now at groups.io, no problems.
> what were the trickiest parts??
No tricky parts AFAIC.? I can't email the group as
[email protected], like I could with YG.? I /can/ post as owner via
web.? On forwarded messages, I can't edit the From header back to the
original author.?
Groups.io doesn't yet have a feature to directly create a list of links.? You
can do it as a wiki or database, but it takes a little more work.
> how long did it take?
I don't remember, but it was faster than I thought.? Within a few days.?
It was *shocking* to see 40,000 messages appear one day!
> we have a 3000 member group and many subgroups.?
If you're on YG, then you don't actually have subgroups, do you?? They're
all separate groups. right?? G.io will allow you to make them subgroups.
The two groups I moved had 400 and 800 members, but were 16+ years
old, so had many messages.
I left one group of 2,000 members at YG because it's dying off and I don't
want to operate it any more.

Re: Moderators Email
Jim,
Thanks for the comprehensive rundown on what worked and what didn't! I'm not allowed to join using the listname+owner address, at least theI wonder if that would work better through the web site Join... (or Request...) button. But no matter since you've chosen a way that works for you. My guess is not (it wouldn't work either). And for the same reason as the +subscribe and the Email Alias both didn't work: the groups.io domain as a whole is probably barred from being a group member so that one can't directly set up an email loop. Re: Moderators Email
Jim,
I would like to be able to send to my groups with a spoofed listownerFrom the New Topic page you can select the +owner address in the From field (if you're a group moderator). You can't do that from the Reply links, as far as I know. I don't know if you can do that by email. I suspect you would have to first go to the web site and join your group under the +owner email address, or allow posting by non-members. You might not be allowed to join with the +owner address, or you might tie something in knots if you do (best set that subscription to NoEmail if you succeed). Shal |
Re: very late delivery of yahoogroup postings
I have stopped using YahooGroups since we got our groups moved to Groups.io. No point. I don't want to monitor both places. On the home page of my old YahooGroups, I put a message saying that we had moved to Groups.io and the new homepage address. Works fine. I also had to remind people to get rid of the old Yahoo address for our group on their computer in "previous addresses" or wherever. Works! Frances |

Re: Moderators Email
Louise,
I'm not sure I understand how this spoofing works, Shal, but doesn'tYes and no. No in that most email services require you to verify an email address before allowing you to use it in the From field of your messages. So with such services only moderators of the group could verify. Which reminds me, be sure to let the other mods know what your up to, otherwise they may think the verification email indicates some form of attack. Yes in that some email services don't require verification. Someone who was posting there had set up an email that sounded like aThat is a disadvantage of using a separate email account for communications from the group management: anyone can do it. On the other hand, since the +owner address can be spoofed it isn't necessarily that much better. Groups.io could stomp on spoofing of the +owner address by setting up DMARC controls for the groups.io domain. But that might well end up being a cure worse than the disease (DMARC is a fledgling anti-spoofing technology that has some problems). Shal |
