Re: Single Owner Group - Owner Deceased

This happened in a group of which I'm a member. After making arrangements with the late owner's family, the moderator went to groups.io/login > Email me a link to log in and entered the owner's email address. When the link arrived at the owner's email inbox, the family forwarded it to the moderator and he was able to log in as the owner.?

Note that this is done at the account level, so the moderator would now have access to any group of this the owner was a member.

Re: Can't access messages #messages

Annie, are you saying that the Messages and New Topic links are missing from the left-hand menu?

Re: Group no longer receiving posts

Problem resolved. iOS gMail was not syncing. I rebooted my iPad and the posts were sent.

Re: how do I get rid of the icons on the bottom?

Barry, a screenshot might be helpful in clarifying your question. Are you saying that the Home, Guidelines, Subscription, Messages, etc. links that normally appear on the left side of the GIO group web page aren't visible?

Pete

Re: Group no longer receiving posts

I have isolated the issue. ?email posts from my iPad are not received. I was able to post using desktop email. ? ?Will update as I research further. ??

how do I get rid of the icons on the bottom?

how do I get rid of the icons on the bottom and get back the menus ob the left side?
The icons don't work for me.

Group no longer receiving posts

As of this morning January 12th my moderated group ([email protected]) is not receiving posts by email. ?Are others experiencing same? ?Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: New groups.io pricing structure

My photo group went to Google Groups.? We are happy.

Can't access messages #messages

When I log in I see no opportunity to select messages or new topic???? I am group owner.? I just created 2 subgroups so could I? have done something that would influence this problem?

Re: I have a dilemma with a group that I help manage and I'm looking for some advice

Great, thanks. The group has been created. And we've gotten some of our membership back. Now I just need to figure out whether I want to upgrade the group to premium in order to talk to Support about changing the name back to the previous name that we had.

Joseph,

Which means I have to help her re-create the group. Which I think if I
remember correctly, we have to wait a whole year before we can use the
same name again.
As far as I know there is no defined time that the name of a deleted group is reserved, it is indefinite (forever). Unless you can talk Groups.io to intervene on your behalf.

And which I don't really want to do due to the new guidelines that
start on for January 18.
You can start the group with a different name now, and rename it later (after you've convinced Groups.io to release the name).

And since none of us are nonprofits, I don't qualify for any of the
discounts.
The only discount is for Enterprise plan groups, and I doubt you'd be looking for that plan.

The group may have only had one maybe 20 members, but we were hoping
that eventually it would've grown. So does anybody have any advice as > to what I should do?
Create the replacement group now, and upgrade it to Premium before January 18th if you believe you'll want the extra features. If you can't sustain the fees for premium you may eventually have to drop back down to Basic, but given the upcoming pricing change you may want to lock in now if you anticipate growing beyond 400 members.

Re: Single Owner Group - Owner Deceased

Jerry,

I am a moderator of a group whose only Owner has passed away. I want to continue the group. How do I make myself and/or others Owners?

You can't.

Only one of a group's owners can promote someone to owner status. If there was only one, and that person can no longer do it, then your group is stuck.

Except in one very narrow condition: if you can convince one of the owner's survivors to either promote someone to owner, or allow someone from the group to access the owner's Groups.io or email account. There has been a reported case of a group doing this, but it depends on the goodwill and capabilities of the owner's survivors.

That's a member you probably don't need. He's rebelling against the
group owners (and probably the group policies, or you wouldn't have
moderation at all), so you might consider banning him or her. Or give
a warning if you think it's worth the time to give him or her a second
opportunity.

The group members have a right to expect posts that are rejected (for
whatever reason) to not reach their inbox. Allowing this to continue
may be detrimental to the group.

You don't provide this information as to whether you are the group
owner or only a moderator (you stated you logged in as a moderator,
not an owner), but if you're not a group owner, you wouldn't be able
to appoint someone else to have higher privileges than you in that
group, any more than a regular group member could appoint someone as a
moderator or owner.

If you are one of the group owners, are you logged in with the owner's
account or just a moderator's account?

If you don't allow anyone except committee members to join the group (Restricted Membership), approving wouldn't really make any difference as long as you make the archives Private.? That way, if you want/need to, you could discuss things within the group.

Re: Need to create a group to collect public opinion

But I don't want all kinds of specific questions that survey monkey is set up for (and indeed, SM wants to charge for comments, though you can get around that).? All I want is a way to receive whatever comments the general public has to make on our local policing in general and on our committee's recommendations in particular.? A comment bucket.? It looks like our group, /g/UlsterTownPoliceReinvention,
will do that just fine, a private group directory listed with posting by non-members allowed.? The committee is the group's membership.? After moderation (required even though moderation is turned off on the group), comments will be sent to us, but the public will not be able to see these comments, which is just as well.
As I wrote in a note explaining this to the group:
If this group were public, everyone would be able to see the postings....and things might become heated and unpleasant.? Making it private keeps the comments confidential and private, so that people can be frank.? In addition this provides a buffer: people might say things that would cause them trouble if said publicly; this will save them that embarrassment.?
Thanks to all that helped me with this.

Well, the simple kludge is that

> So the non-member posts will appear to moderated-evaluated in the owner & moderator mailbox
> So they can see the message and do whatever they want with it, but not approve it so it doesn't go to the group at large

The method I gave was to prevent someone from joining the group just to get email addresses and doesn't apply here.

Anyone that's a member of the group will see other member's email addresses in each post if they get individual messages.? There's no way to prevent that.? A malcontent can save/harvest those as they come in and use them at a later date.
