Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

The last two weeks' change logs:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: You can create files in the Files section that are links to
Google Docs/Dropbox/Box/OneDrive documents.
Yay! Now for photos in the Photo section that links to Google Photos / Flickr / and similar services. And Albums that are links to Albums on those services!

Comments about these others are also welcome:

-07-24
BUGFIX: Fixed sorting of Files section search results.
INTERNAL: More work converting templates to quicktemplate.
UPDATE: Owners and Members manuals updates from Nina.
SYSADMIN: Upgraded the machine instance dedicated to virus scanning.
NEW: If your position on an event waitlist changes, you will be
notified by email.
NEW: You can select either a grid or list display when viewing event
rsvps.
NEW: Moderators and the event owner can now manage RSVPs, changing
them to Attending/Not Attending/Not Sure. These changes are logged
in the activity log.
CHANGE: If you are on the waitlist for an event, change your RSVP to
no or not sure, and then change back to attending, you're put at the
back of the waitlist.
NEW: When someone is moved off the waitlist, it is logged in the
activity log.
BUGFIX: Fixed several issues with ICS file generation, especially
around UTF-8 conversion. Also stopped stripping out ':' characters,
because the other fixes addressed the original issue with ':'.
-07-31
CHANGE: When emailing RSVP responders, default the From line to the
person sending it (it would normally default to +owner if a mod was
sending the message).
CHANGE: Exporting event RSVP responses now returns a CSV file,
containing all responses.
DOCS: Updates from Nina and beta of the new Getting Started Guide for
Owners.
NEW: Enterprise groups can set the logo used for web push
notifications.
NEW: When you RSVP yes to an event (and are not waitlisted), you will
get an email notification.
CHANGE: Only display RSVP additional information fields for
moderators / event owners.
CHANGE: Consolidated some RSVP notification messages.
NEW: When a moderator/event owner changes an RSVP, a notification is
sent to the person.
CHANGE: Changed help wording of RSVP yes message when creating an
event.
CHANGE: Locking a topic that contains a poll now also now closes the
poll.
INTERNAL: Optimized the code for converting an HTML string to plain
text to deal with some pathologically large style blocks we
encountered in an uploaded file, which was causing exceptionally
long runtimes and timeouts.
CHANGE: Changed terminology from maybe to not sure for event RSVPs.
BUGFIX: Don't send out a yes message email to someone RSVPing to an
event if there is no yes message.
BUGFIX: Fixed links in Files search results.

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: Not receiving subscription requests

I initially set the group up in January but we are just now about to start inviting people to it.? I copied and pasted the exact same name into each of the email accounts that I used.? Those from gmail and aol did not do anything.? The ones from work and university emails did what was expected

The rest of the line is informational and specific to GMail. This may change
in the future.

1596171753 is a Unix timestamp (in seconds) [1]. This one is 2020-07-31
05:02:33Z. This is the time that the GMail server thought it was when
Groups.io connected.

q8si5747589ilg.14 is _probably_ a unique code that GMail generated for the
connection that Groups.io made to send the message. The GMail engineers can
probably use this to find the detailed logs of this connection to debug
issues. Good luck getting in contact with one, though. ;-)

"gsmtp" is the name of the program implementing the SMTP protocol [2], the
way that one computer sends an email to another. It probably stands for
"Google SMTP".

How new is the group?? Have you tried any of the other accounts since the successes?? Are you sure you spelled the groupname correctly when sending the subscription email?? The more information you can give us, the better our guesses will be.? Based on what you've said so far, I don't see a reason for a subscription request to be ignored.

Not receiving subscription requests

I am about to send an email to a large number of people about a new group with the email to request a subscription at "mygroup"[email protected]

I tested out a few emails to make sure it was working.? I have a few accounts on gmail and aol.? None of those accounts received an email back asking for confirmation that I sent the email, my owner email did not get an email and there is no activity listed on the admin page.? My wife and daughter tried with their gmail email with the same non results.? In the past I was able to request a subscription from my gmail account.

I then sent an email from my university .edu account and also had my wife send one from her work email and they worked as expected.

Any ideas?? I would like to make sure that everyone can request a subscription who wants it

Thanks

Bruce,

Sorry, I figured that out on my own as well about 15 minutes after I sent the post.?Too bad that one can't retract (or edit) a post if it is the moderation stage.

Deciphering coding for an email delivery

One of my group members is not receiving emails from the group and when I goto to her entry and look at her Email Delivery History I see the following:

2.0.0 OK 1596171753 q8si5747589ilg.14 - gsmtp

She has a gmail email address and is on Daily Summary.

I thought the explanation was clear.? "Pending Members list > Message > 'Email delivery History'" will only show the last email delivered.? In your case, that was the confirmation email.? I believe that's always the case when someone is creating a new account at the same time as joining a group, the Pending goes out, then the Confirmation.? You're very unlikely to see that the Pending was sent unless you can sneak in for a look between the sending of those 2 messages.

It's easy to see if they already have an account because only the pending would be sent.

Sorry.

To expand:? in Settings > 'Member Notices' one of the notices is 'Subscription Pending' and is Active.? So, when someone applies to join us, they receive the Subscription Pending notice.?
And ALSO the confirmation message, if they don't already have a groups.io account.

However, upon looking at the Pending Members list > Message > 'Email delivery History',? it advises : "Confirmation Message" followed by the date and not "Subscription Pending"...
This box displays the delivery status of the most recently sent message only.

It could be that the confirmation message is the second one sent. It could also be (if the subscription still has an NC badge) that the Pending Subscription message is being withheld until the confirmation email has been responded to, at which time it will be sent. In either case the most recent message would be the confirmation email, and that would be the one displayed in the box.

...hence my question - is this a bug.
Hence my answer...no.

Well Gerald, I should back up. Maybe there is a compelling reason...consistency.

Anything uploaded today displays the time it was received.
Anything uploaded this year will display Mmm dd
Anything uploaded in a previous year will display the date according to your account preference.

Message and photo date/timestamps, wiki edits, etc are all handled in this manner. If one is changed, all of them probably should be.

Gerald -- The date format does not comply with your personal account preferences unless the file was uploaded/updated in a previous year. This behavior is similar to the date/timestamp seen on messages, which shows the posting time for today's messages and the date for anything posted on a previous day.

I see no compelling reason why file upload dates should be handled in this manner and changing it would be a good #suggestion for beta.

No. If the applicant doesn't already have a groups.io account, a confirmation email is sent along with the Pending Subscription notice. I don't recall which is sent first.

Re: groups.io replies go to spam/junk folder #spam

Raphael,

I have a group member who says that
*her OWN REPLIES to group messages go to her spam folder*
It is not uncommon for spam filters to treat a message that is arriving To the same address it was ostensibly sent From as spam. Spammers and viruses of old often did that (put the destination address in the From field).

That's something the member will have to take up with their email interface by whatever controls it has for marking messages as "not spam" or whitelisting senders or filtering or whatever.

(This has been going on since the group transferred from Yahoo Groups
in December 2019.)
It didn't happen in the later years of Yahoo Groups due to their response to DMARC. They replace the From address in all messages - so her messages would no longer be From her, but From the group's posting address.

The effect is particularly pronounced when she is replying to a
certain member whose email address is /*@gmail.com*/
I don't know why that would be. Maybe something in that member's sig line or other characteristics gets the spam filter's attention.

User is a regular member of the group. email address:
/name/*@hotmail.com*
I don't use hotmail, so can't comment on their spam handling.

Outlook for Mac
Outlook for Android on Google Play
I also don't use Outlook.

Outlook is frequently cited as a troublemaker, but it may not be to blame in this case. But that does depend on which spam filter is catching her messages - the one at hotmail, or the one inside Outlook (if it has one).

*Protocol*: IMAP or SMTP of POP3 I would happily supply these if
relevant., I expect it will be IMAP
IMAP has the advantage that the user can access the server-side Spam folder from within Outlook (not so with POP3). But client apps and email services vary as to whether spam-related actions in the client inform the server side spam filter.

Might impressive memory you have there.?Any recollection if something also happened around that time that changed the date format from yyyy-mm-dd to mmm-dd.
The example is sorted by date. I can't imagine I ever changed a setting to not show the year. All groups are showing the same date format changeover.
