This is for privacy reasons.? If your group doesn't mind revealing the entire thing, go to Admin > Settings, second area down is Privacy, bottom option is for "Hide Email Addresses In Archives".? If you set that to "Do not mask email addresses in the archives." they'll be visible online.

Full Email Address Truncated

A member sent an email with the email address of another individual in the text of the message. If you look at the email as received in an inbox the entire address is displayed.? If you view the message in the archives the address is tructated to xxxxx.yyy@.....? If you look at the source code the full address is there. If you click on the truncated address to send a reply to that individual you on get the truncated address on the TO line.?

Any words of wisdom of why and is their a fix?

Bill

Re: Space used

OK, understood.
My group, after eliminating duplicates in the e-mailed list, currently has the following:
E-mailed is 766 photos using 293 Mb of space, or an average of 382Kb per photo.
Photos is 576 photos using 535 Mb of space , or an average of 913 Kb per photo.
Files is 132 Mb but that is not a concern.

What troubles me is that it appears that the e-mailed attachments, appearing in a
separate "folder" in the Photos section appear to be counted twice!
I looked at the Photos (not the e-mailed atts) and found that they are mostly
30-60 Kb each, much smaller than the 382Kb of the more recent E-mailed
photos from attachments. Most of the actual Photos were taken with old cameras log ago
and so are small.

As an experiment to see if the 766 photos were counted twice I added all photos together
and got 1342 photos.
If they were 382 Kb each, average, they would occupy 510 Mb of space.

That is enough to suggest that since the e-mailed photos are located in the Photos section,
they are being counted twice, and my free group really has a lot more space available that is
reported. Hope this is understandable.

I can invite one of you to be a Member if it would help clear this up.

Your opinion please.

Thanks,
Richard

Well Shal, color me extra slooow!, but I finally understood the explanation about changing the Editor option in my Preferences to HTML temporarily. Once I did that yes, the other formatting buttons showed up in the Wiki Formatting Bar under the dropdown menu and I was able to effect the wanted changes.

So thanks to everyone on here who offered me help and suggestions, and also for all the explanations and patient nudging. I never would've figured it out on my own.

And with any luck this extended thread may help out some other newbies who're having a similar problem.

Cheers!

Re: Wiki

Hello,
Just starting to go through the wiki page (?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-put-a-Table-of-Contents-on-a-Wiki-page?) and one thing that took me a few minutes to figure out was that the actual line -?[?TOC:Example Table of Contents:1?]?- needs to be in paragraph style.
I had already started my page with Headings and inserted the TOC before my first entry, making it Heading 1. Looked really funky. Took me about 5 minutes to figure it out.
You might mention adding the TOC as the 1st step in creating a new page before adding content as I'm pretty sure most wouldn't change the style until they got to that point anyway.

That's a temporary error (anything 4xx is), so GIO will retry sending the invitation.? I'm not sure what the time is between tries.? Some services use this to "graylist" email senders like GIO to limit the amount of mail they can send in a relatively short time.

If you get a 5xx error, that means that GIO has received a hard error.? With those, it won't try again.

No.? When anyone joins the group, online or via email, they have an account on GIO - their email address.? If they want to do anything more than shown in the email command list, they'd need to go online.? However, that's not as tedious as it was on YG.? See /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Logging-In? They don't even need to create a password unless they want to.

For setting up a signature, see /static/help#sig (which will need to be done online.)

Do groups.io group members need a groups.io account?

Lisa Maco

I am an owner and moderator of a neighborhood listserve that moved from the Yahoo Groups platform.? I created a groups.io account for myself so that I could create the new groups.io group.?

I think members of the group can be members without having to have a groups.io account.? Is that correct?

If so, they can do a number on things via email commands, such as:

What Are The Available Email Commands?

You can send a blank email to the following email addresses (substituting your group name for GROUPNAME):

[email protected]
To join a group
[email protected]
To unsubscribe from a group
[email protected]
To receive an email containing a list of these commands
[email protected]
To receive plain digests instead of individual messages
[email protected]
To receive full featured digests instead of individual messages
[email protected]
To receive a daily summary instead of individual messages
[email protected]
To receive individual messages instead of digests or a summary
[email protected]
To only receive special messages
[email protected]
To stop receiving messages via email (you may still read messages on the Web)
[email protected]
To contact the owners of a group

BUT how can members to things like change their signature?? Are there tasks that can be done only if the member has a groups.io account?

Thanks -

Re: Joining the subgroup directly still not possible?

Based on my testing, of joining sub-group:
Invite causes them to be joined to the Sub Group (with e-mails to them and group owner, and an 'accepted invite' activity log), and the Main group - without any notification (e-mail or activity log) - they just (mysteriously) appear on the list of members.
Subscribe+ e-mail results - if not already a Main Group member- in them joining the Main group (only), without any indication to them that they will - first they know is the Welcome to Main@~ email.

Neither is to my mind correct behaviour.

It shouldn't.? I just tested on one of my groups that is text only and the formatting bar has all the tools as long as my account preference is set to html and the window is large enough.

Duane
Epicatt2, I tested the other day and posted here as well. You don't have to change the group's settings. Just your own in Account (top right corner). And I found I could make a change to the wiki with the extra tools, and it remained, even after I changed my editor preference to text. In fact, I could use the functions on previously created pages even after changing to text editor.

Re: #featurerequest Request for Cover Image caption #featurerequest

Paul,

Shal, what you suggest is unlikely since my Macbook Pro is a 15-incher.?

I believe what matters is the pixel width, not the physical width. I've noticed the problem when the window is below around 1000 pixels wide. That said, I'd think a modern machine like that would have more than enough pixels in the default screen size. So maybe there is a problem with how the site's responsive code is interpreting your device's parameters.
I also checked that possibility by enlarging and shrinking the image in the window by using [ Command + '+'? or '-' ].? Also checked by dragging the window larger and smaller.? Neither option caused any truncating of the dropped down formatting menu for the Wiki setup.

One of my complaints with the current setup is that the collection of buttons is "locked in" at the time you open the page. Changing the size or zoom afterward won't cause the missing buttons to appear. This makes it tedious to test the width issue.
Nor does there seem to be any way to change that in my account's Preferences accessed upper right corner under my name.? I even checked there, JIC.

It should be there:

Note that this only affects a Wiki page when the page is created. Later edits to the page retain the editor preference of its creation.

Chances are it's just rr being rr.? They don't play well with GIO on occasion.? Any error message(s) you got may help narrow the problem area.

The biggest complaint with rr is that people using that service are removed for marking messages as spam, even though they haven't.? See /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Removed-for-spam#Service-Providers

It probably would depend on the size of the email service.? The large ones like Yahoo or Gmail would likely consider it a gnat (annoyance).? A small service might see a few and decide that GIO should be blacklisted.? It would basically be what percentage of a service's users are claiming spam.? And those that just delete the email won't cause any problems.

It sounds to me like you've tried to think through the various possibilities, so unless something strikes you suddenly, I'd go for it.

Samuel, Duane,

Duane wrote:

Legally, each post belongs to the person that made it.? However, GIO must have considered that when they did transfers.?

As I recall Mark made the pragmatic decision to accept the action of the Y!Group mod/owner (in promoting the transfer agent) as proxy for the approval of the membership.

After the fact, any member who objects to having their content at Groups.io can file a "take down" request which Groups.io will honor. The logic of that is based in US copyright law, specifically the DMCA and its safe-harbor provisions for sites that host user-supplied content. Late in the game Mark also implemented a "before the fact" means for the person setting up the transfer to exclude specific members (email addresses) and their content from the transfer.
