Re: Embedding the signup form in wordpress.com?

The promote form is exactly the one I am talking about. The promote form does not seem to work with wordpress.com at all. Did anyone make a wordpress.com friendly version of that promo embed form? If not, is there a way to have an external form system email the subscribe email, and the confirmation goes straight to the user?

Gary;it might be worth noting that it is possible to use Groups.io without having a password; say a subscriber forgot their password they can request a log - in link that will give them access to their groups in perpetuity provided that they revisit their account / one or more of their groups at not more than 30 day intervals. What you seem to be proposing would radically alter the way Groups.io works for at least a section of the overall community and there is no means of knowing (a) how Mark would react to that, and (b) how any of your subscribers who may already be Groups.io Account holders would feel about it. It would also (c) put your members at least partially outside the assistance that is available from both "Support" at Groups.io and here on the GMF.

I have done some tests on another group but so far have not been able to replicate any of the problem as you have reported it. Having said that I am still awaiting a digest to appear but I suspect that nothing untoward will occur. Time will tell...

However having revisited your original post I realise that you did originally report I can't find these attachments on the groups.io PADCO web site, either and overall we seem to have a collection of mutually exclusive symptoms, which is absurd.

One thought that springs to mind is the format of the attachments that appear to be not getting through. What format (or formats) are they? The tests I carried out used photographs in jpg and non - member posts revealed their attachments after moderation, and posts I submitted which were emails sent to me from a non - member; I posted them by forwarding (as per your orignal description)? and again the attachments worked.

At this moment I simply don't think we have sufficient information to progress this investigation any further; there are too many potential variables and we don't know which ones might be varying.

You might care to note that there is a subscriber setting that can stop attachments turning up, but if this setting is invoked the subscriber is sent a link (or links) from which the attachment can be obtained. Are these links turning up instead?

I've found that PG Offline did get the Attachments and Photos of GMF,
just not in the location that I'd expected. So I've a different mystery,
which is why I have an imposter "PG Offline 4" folder where I expected
the real one to be. But I think that may be an artifact of having
rebuilt my system after a crashed hard-drive, and probably not something
that users generally encounter.

Before running PGO, you can change the defaults of where things are stored. It's under the "Grup" Tab. For example, I set messages, Files, Links, Members, Attachments, and Photos lo like-named folders on a memory key known as E:\.

If you ran it another time using default settings, they would be in
C:\users\[yourname]\Appdata\Local\PGOffline4

And the older capture would surely have less data than the newer one unless the group was moribund.

If you don't want to run an emulator, then PG Offline is off the table.

Will Mark's YahooMessagesApplication make the From field and the message date work properly?
Presumably. If you contact Mark and get him to upload your mbox files for you, please report back on how things went and what the price point is.

Have you tried the tools in Admin, Promote on Groups.io? Several options there.

My programmer husband has used a Windows emulator on his Mac. But you have to get the emulator plus buy Windows.
He suggests you look at Wineskin - free open source.
or
Crossover - costs about $60 but it won't run all applications.
It is based on Wineskin but is easier to use.

He says that if you have more money than time, your best bet is the emulator.

About settings - what is your privacy setting for the subgroup? Visibility? Can users see?

?Second, you *could* set everyone in your subgroup to special notices only. ?Go to the subgroup. Choose Members. in Admin. Click the box beside display name to select all. (You could untick yourself or any special testing email addresses.) Use the dropdown Actions button and choose change subscription. Change to special notices (or no mail, if you allow that.)

Entire membership receives notification when I create Subgroups #email

First, I'm a new Premium groups.io admin. We transferred our Yahoo Group to groups.io recently.
I am still checking settings and investigating sub-groups, etc before officially announcing the switch to our members. So, I'm wondering about notification e-mails.
When I did the transfer, I discovered that all 100+ members received an automated e-mail announcement that they were joined to the group, etc. I was not expecting this, and it generated some questions from people who didn't even realize I was working on this project.
Then, I created a sub-group to see if we could benefit from them (I'm thinking yes), and again, all members received a notification that I created a sub-group.

How can disable all member notifications until I'm done configuring/testing this group?

Certainly in retrospect, I would not have added any members until I had gone through everything but due to the compressed timing of the Yahoo groups sunset, I was under a crunch to get it going.

Re: LInk Forum Membership with Organization Membership #membership #api #website #subscription

Thanks, Shal - One reason I'm asking about password control (I guess I'd prefer using an OAuth token) is that I'm trying to figure out a way to use the API to pre-log-in a website user from within WordPress, and through API Login functionality, log them into Groups.IO automatically.

Ideas, anyone?

Thanks again for all your thoughtful replies.

Gary

Re: LInk Forum Membership with Organization Membership #membership #api #website #subscription

Thank you, Frances! I hadn't thought of subgroups, but yes, I could add or delete members from the "active members" subgroup as necessary. However, I understand this is a manual process, unless I'm missing an API hook for this purpose.

Thanks! - Gary

Re: LInk Forum Membership with Organization Membership #membership #api #website #subscription

Oo er... Why do you need to be able to set passwords? Passwords are an "Account Level" feature and do not exist per group. IMHO that is a requirement too far.

Hi, Chris: The ability to set/reset user passwords is a standard feature of Wordpress, and comes in very handy when setting up groups of test users, for example. I'm still at the testing phase of this project. - Gary

Re: Search For Groups

Frances,

I would agree with the BOT crawling.?

So, the very FIRST line and the very TAIL line of the words on the main page gets placed into the main pages META data for the header aka <head>

Meta description is a short paragraph of text in the HTML <head> section of a page. It is usually displayed in a SERP snippet after website's title and URL. In HTML it looks like this for our group:
?
<meta property="og:description" content="*yanmar tractor owners group compact deere cadet CUT SCUT Yan... YM1900, YM1800, YM1720, YM1700, YM1500, YM1401, YM1300 * *">
?
My FIRST line is all the white-on-white text.? It does work as GIO pulls that into the meta property field. :)? And the TAIL (last line) contains much of the popular models manufactured in that era.? Thus, I now see this as a win-win when the BOT does crawl thru.
?
Using the FF TOOLS > WEB DEVELOPER > INSPECTOR, the above head portion is displayed.

As for the header TITLE, it seems GIO doesn't allow this for modification as it shows the first half of the group's web address as the title.

I would like to see folks join GIO and not the YG listserv crippled service of our old location.? Getting the GIO group out there in the forefront ahead of the YG is very important to us going forward.

Francies -- I noticed that, too. There appears to be some position: absolute or other style directives messing things up, such that content is lying on top of each other.

David -- If you are cutting-and-pasting from a Word document or some other web site, don't. Clear everything out and edit your Description using the editor's own menu tools.

Re: Home Page Does not Allow Text as shown

I am listed as Moderator in the top left corner.
I have entered a Description.? It shows up in the middle of the Group Info and Settings area rather than above it.? I did paste this from another site.? So potentially that caused the issue.
I could delete this and manually input the text I suppose.? Or is there another way to clean it up and restart?
