Re: Is registration required?

Does that work only for their transferred group? (Not needing a password to log into the group)

I may be be wrong but I thought I was asked to establish a password to log into the main GIO website when I wanted to create a group or join a different group.

Re: Visibility of Directory

The Directory is an index of subscriber profiles. Each subscriber "owns" their own profile, and if they choose not to create one (or keep it hidden), that's their prerogative.

If you -- as a group Owner -- want every subscriber to "see" every other subscriber you have to share the Member List (Privacy>Members Visible).

Re: Visibility of Directory

I gather since the members are also brand new to GIO, they either haven't logged into the your group's web interface or haven't updated the directory profile in your group or haven't selected the setting that allows their entered information it to be visible to your other group members.?

One of the monthly notices I set up for our group was explaining the Member Directory feature. I set up a wiki with screen shots to walk them through it. Even so, only about 5% have actually logged into our group and made the required changes.?

I do appreciate that owners and mods can view the entire directory regardless, but it does create a disadvantage for members.?

There is no way to search on the subject line only while ignoring the message body.

Not necessarily. Go to your hashtags and work through them; some may indeed relate to part numbers and the like, so leave them at the moment. Identify the others that clearly aren't part numbers (#Wow for example) and delete them. Once that's done you can perhaps work your way through the "part numbers" and slowly get rid of them; is there any real value in a message years ago about a specific part number or something equally not deserving of a hashtag?

Before you start it might be worth considering preventing your members from creating hashtags(if you haven't done tis already) so that they can only use ones that you are happy with and thus have set up yourself. Go to Admin > Settings and scroll down to Message Policies; set Hashtag Permissions to something other than Messages can ge tagged with new hashtags. Don't forget to save the change... If you don't stop members creating new and bizarre hashtags they will probably grow in number faster than you can get rid of them again.

Re: Monthly notice not going out

Sandi D.

I can verify that the monthly notice does go out for our group. We are a free basic group. We set two up on Oct 27, 28 and both went out to our group on Nov 1st.?
I have no explanation as to why yours isn't going out.?
The type is "monthly reminder" and the blue "Active" button is displayed.?

If I open the message fields I see "Monthly Reminder" in the first drop down field, followed by "Name" "Subject", a check mark in the "Active Message" box and then the actual message body.

Perhaps go back into your message fields and click the update link. Or delete it and start over.

Re: Can I set questions for people requesting to join the group?

I agree it seems the "Pending Subscription" Member Notice feature was not fully thought through.

Some believe it was intended only to PROVIDE Additional Information TO applicants for Subscription, and given that's all it REALLY does they may be right...

Others use it to REQUEST Additional Information FROM applicants - I change its Subject to: "Additional Information Required".

Currently there is no way to automatically put applicants 'on hold' until they answer such a request.
Consequently, it is the first step in the workaround to do so.

Your suggestion that the "View Pending Member" link be attached to a "Pending Subscription" Member Notice reply is a good one.

Perhaps next year after the Great YG Migration (and probably the Groups.io app is rolled out), it can be one of several excellent feature requests to be brought up again and instituted.

I believe a better way to vet would-be subscribers should be second only to an Absentee Owner Succession feature and/or a restructuring Set Moderator Privileges (to prevent a Founder/Original Owner being deposed).

Hang in there, Groups.io DOES work on improving itself...

Because it is simply a reply from the applicant's email interface direct to the group's +owner address.
That is true, but it would be nice (and thus it's an RFE) if one could add such a link (or similarly helpful information) in the pending notice, so that when users press "reply" and the notice is included in the reply, it's there for the moderator to click. Of course, not all members who reply include the original message in their reply.

Re: Monthly notice not going out

Jim,

Shal, you lost me. It is titled a monthly reminder.
D'oh.

So it is. I completely forgot that one had been added to the roster of Member Notices. I thought I had an example of every type in my test group, but I was missing that one.

So I guess I don't see what isn't there, for the wrong definition of "there". (Should have looked in the Drop-list for New Notice).

Odd.

That one sorts out of order if you click on the Type column. I wonder if that is a clue to anything. I guess I'll find out in a couple weeks.

I think he¡¯s referring to the ¡°Monthly Reminder¡± notice type. ?See attached photo. ?It was announced here:?

I have one set up, but I haven¡¯t had it set long enough to witness it on the 1st of a month to see if it actually works, or if it fails as Jim is seeing.

Shal,? you lost me.? It is titled a monthly reminder.? It says it is sent out monthly so what is it that I am seeing that is not there?? What I am hearing is that the monthly reminder does not go out automatically every month like the description implies ( "Message sent to the group every month" ).? Am I wrong?

Peter,

I then previewed it using the eyeball icon. Everything looked fine
but when I sent a message out the formatting was wrong.
Does Groups.io add certain parameters I should be aware of?
Most likely the problem is that the formatted text editor strips many HTML tags and parameters when you save the text. I believe that is the same for the Sig text as well as message bodies, wiki pages, and elsewhere.

I don't know of any specific documentation about it though.

Re: moving from subgroup to main group #transfer #howto

You can easily verify that the Yahoo content is still there.

In that case, simply start another transfer of the main Yahoo content to the main (parent) groups.io group. Create a new GIO subgroup (with a different temporary name), and transfer the Yahoo subcommittee content to the new GIO subgroup. After you have verified that the new content is complete and correct, delete the current committee subgroup (remember to change its name to a unique random string first), and then rename the temporary subcommittee subgroup to its desired original name.

Should work but don't wait too long.

The only type of notice that can be sent automatically every month is the Group Guidelines type.? Make sure you have one and that you've selected the "Send monthly to group" check box.? There is no Active box for this type.

Signature/Advanced toolbar/Source code #htmlsignature

Hello,
Is there any Wiki or Help info regarding html signatures??
I basically copied and pasted the code signature I use for Apple Mail. I then previewed it using the eyeball icon.? Everything looked fine but when I sent a message out the formatting was wrong.
Does Groups.io add certain parameters I should be aware of?
I've attached the Good and the Bad.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

It's probably one of the blocked domains since it issues disposable addresses.? There are several that have been blocked by groups.io for being major spam sources.? You could contact support to verify it.
