Re: Is there a way to automatically respond to people posting in my old yahoo group telling them to move to groups.io? #yahoo

I changed my Yahoo group description on my groups. The new description informs my group members where to find us. And why we moved! It also informs Yahoo, if they happen to read it, that we need more than a glorified email group.

Group Description

THIS GROUP HAS MOVED

New Location for Group

/g/? Group Name

We have moved in order to preserve our vitally important historical information, our photos of our ancestors and documents and our precious archives of files and attachments.I

Notice to members:
All group activity and messaging will be at the new location. Participation in the group is only possible at the new location.?
Therefore, all members of this Yahoo group are required to also be members at the new location. Members who leave the new group will also be removed from the Yahoo group.

Is registration required?

Edited

I apologize in advance because I know I read this somewhere but can't find it.? Please point me to where it explains that if your members were transferred from a yahoogroups, if they were getting emails there, they should get emails from the new io group and be able to post via email or reply to someone else's post via email.? If I understand correctly, they only have to register with groups.io if they want to use the web UI.? Is this correct?

If you find you need to, you can set up and activate a pending subscription notice. Not too much work. Just about all happens automatically. But it might save you some grief.

Thank you for your reply Dano.

In the past I have joined groups that requested a reason why I wanted
to join. I may consider doing that if I start to get too many of the
wrong sort of people in the group. I just don't know what the wrong
sort is at the moment. I guess I'll play it by ear. I would rather not
have to do too much extra work if I don't have to, because it takes
time. Then again, having to actively moderate a list takes time as
well. I prefer to let a group moderate itself if at all possible. The
theory is that most of the people joining the list will want to stay
on topic. But I know how that can go. So I'll just have to see who
joins, and what the dynamic of the group is. The main thing, for me,
is to not have to be putting too much time twiddling with the
dashboard in the background.

I set all my groups to moderated. If the messages are visible to members and there's no approval process for members it lets anyone in to scan your archives. In one group, I ask applicants to tell me why they want to join. I get all kinds of answers, but it tells me most people are interested. On the others I can just watch for suspicious members. I think of it like having a screen door on an open back door - it doesn't keep out a determined wind, but it helps keep the flies out.

Re: yahoo group transfer

Jessica,

doesn't seem to be happening. As many of the members from the old
group are emailing me seperatetly.
What are they telling you?

followed step by step Messge says it's in progress.
Can you screenshot that message for us? Or at least quote the message exactly?

Are you at a screen like the screenshot in Step 5 here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups

But this has been going on for about six weeks
Then you are stuck somewhere, Groups.io is caught up. Go over the sequence in the wiki page above and do every step in order.

Bounce reason?

Is there any general opinion as to why members of a premium transferred group are bouncing? I know it has been discussed but I don¡¯t know if anything was decided. Yahoo used to tell you why there was a bounce.

Thank you

Re: Is there a way to automatically respond to people posting in my old yahoo group telling them to move to groups.io? #yahoo

Adam, Chris,

Set it to "Announcement" and they will not be able to post and that
/should/ get their attention.
In the controls of a Yahoo Group that would be on the Access Control tab of the Control Panel. In the row for "Messages-Who can post" move the selector to the Moderators Only column.

Or, as I did, on the Moderation tab select Moderated, and use the Reject with Reply function to remind the stragglers about the change of posting address.

Transfers caught up #migration

There was a message on Friday morning from Mark (Groups.io).?From November 15, 2019

Hi All,
As of this morning, we've completely worked through the backlog of Yahoo Group transfer requests. It took 29 days, but we did it. :-)
I've removed the option to pay for a priority transfer.
?I'm still only responding to support emails from premium group owners right now. There's just too much otherwise. Also, the beta group is still moderated.
A reminder: please get your transfer requests in by the end of the month.
Thanks,
Mark
?
If you are still in limbo, you need to find out what's happening. Check the status of your transfer.
To check status of an ongoing transfer: ?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948

People are reporting really quick turn around. Earlier today someone said: "taking about an hour from go-ahead to completion."

Re: Multiple e-mail problem

Ginger,

My group still shows up under my Hotmail account, so hopefully,
I will now get messages delivered there.
Whether or not you receive messages from a particular group is controlled by the settings in the Subscription page of that group, when signed in using the email address in question.

Since I deleted the account with the "wrong" address will my messages
now go to the hotmail address, or is there something else I need to
do?
Deleting that account won't have any effect on delivery to another account.

I was able to delete the account under the "wrong" e-mail.
...
I can't see the membership list on that group to know if I am
subscribed under two different e-mail addresses.
If you deleted the account for the wrong address, then it is no longer subscribed to any groups. The mods on that group may not know how to tell how many subscriptions you have, unless you've given them a list of all of your email addresses to check.

Re: yahoo group transfer

But Mark says he caught up.

Did you pay for 1 year of premium?

Did you double-check the transfer status?

If you think you've requested a transfer and it's not complete, there's a problem with it. ?Go through the Detailed Instructions to find out where you're at, /g/GroupManagersForum/message/23597?
?
Go to the Yahoo transfer page at /yahootransfer
Select the transfer you want to check status on from "Existing Transfers" at lower right (click on its name)*
The box at the top of the resulting page will tell you the status of that transfer.
Repeat for any other transfers you may have in progress.
For transfers that are actually approved and in progress, see also: to see at which stage you are in the transfer queue.

Re: Second group to move

Eric,

I have renamed the existing group to it's it's use as the primary
group. I clicked on the button and nothing seems to have changed.
If the group is still without subgroups, then the name change should be instantaneous when you push the Update Group button at the bottom of the Settings page.

It should appear under the new name in the Your Groups list and elsewhere. You might need to refresh your browser page to see it though.

Probably a case of gray listing by your provider then.? Some of them seem to do that on a regular, but random, basis for some reason.

It would be nice to have the option (and if enacted), could be anonymous for usage.? And users would of course have to accept the privacy policy messages are being tracked for open rates.

IIRC one of Groups.io's selling points (along with "no advertising") was (is?) "no tracking", although I have to admit I cannot find anywhere at the moment that specfically says either.

On that basis I'm not sure how Mark would react to someone operating tracking on a specific group or groups.

Doing a bit more digging I found myself turning to the Terms of Service (again) and found that what you are looking for might well be in breach of Conditions of Use / User Conduct point 9 and possibly also Commercial Use.
