Transfer Process for second group "Stuck"

Hi there,

You have successfully completed one transfer for us of one of our Yahoo Groups (THANKS!), but the transfer process for our second Yahoo group is currently "stuck" ?in a bit of a loop, and I'm not sure what I should do next to ensure it can be completed. Here's where things are at:

I had sent an invite from our Yahoo group to [email protected]. (Step 1) When I check the transfer status page to check on the progress it says "needs your attention", so I look it up and it tells me that [email protected] has accepted the invite and I need to now make groups.io a Moderator of the Yahoo group. (Step 2) EXCEPT: When I go into the Yahoo group to change them to a Moderator, they are not showing up in the members list for that group (as though the invite was not accepted or did not go through properly). So, I tried a few times to re-send an invite from the Yahoo Group to [email protected],?hoping you might receive the request and accept it and then I can see you as a member and make you a moderator, but that hasn't happened. ?

The Yahoo Group in question is:?
I am wanting to transfer the contents of that Yahoo group to a subgroup of my paid subscription main group on groups.io.

Do I need to cancel the request and start over? Is there a way you can "reset" the invite status so that I can re-send the invite again and have you try to accept it anew?

Please advise how best for me to proceed.

Thank You,
pnrt

In Admin, Settings, go to the third button.
3) Cover Photo button:
You can add a photo for your group home page as well as a group icon for use on mobile devices. Upload a file containing the cover photo. It will be scaled to fit within 900 x 300 pixels - 3:1 ratio.

Re: Multiple e-mail problem

Hi Shal,
Fingers crossed that I¡¯ve got it fixed. I deleted the wrong account. I then e-mailed the owner of the group in question to have her check my membership. It would only be two e-mail addresses - the Hotmail one or the wrong one. She confirmed that I was only listed once in the membership under the Hotmail address.
I¡¯m really sorry for all the confusion. I know all of the moderators here have their hands full with so many questions. I do appreciate all of you taking the time to answer my and every one¡¯s many questions.

Whether or not you receive messages from a particular group is controlled by the settings in the Subscription page of that group, when signed in using the email address in question.

Since I deleted the account with the "wrong" address will my messages
now go to the hotmail address, or is there something else I need to
do?
Deleting that account won't have any effect on delivery to another account.

I was able to delete the account under the "wrong" e-mail.
...
I can't see the membership list on that group to know if I am
subscribed under two different e-mail addresses.
If you deleted the account for the wrong address, then it is no longer subscribed to any groups. The mods on that group may not know how to tell how many subscriptions you have, unless you've given them a list of all of your email addresses to check.

Re: Is registration required?

Suzanne,

Please point me to where it explains that if your members were
transferred from a yahoogroups, if they were getting emails there,
they should get emails from the new io group and be able to post via
email or reply to someone else's post via email.
Being a member implies the ability to receive and post messages by email.

More detail is found in the second bullet point on the transfer instructions page:
"We will add all members that are currently confirmed and not bouncing
to your group. Members' subscription preferences (email, no email,
digest, etc.) will be preserved. Members' posting privileges (group
default, override - moderated, etc.) will also be preserved."
/yahootransfer

If I understand correctly, they only have to register with groups.io
if they want to use the web UI. Is this correct?
That is correct.

Note that the word "register" implies a lot more formality than is actually required. All they need do is log in - they're already signed up. On the Log In page they can use either the Forgot password link or the the email a login link button.

Re: Is registration required?

And just to say it again, those that transfer from Yahoo Groups LOG IN, not sign up.

When they are moved, they are registered.

Their email address is their account ID.

See the links in the other email for info. Feel free to share them.?

You don't have to do anything. When they are transferred from YahooGroups by Groups.io transfer process, they are migrated with the proper status. (Except no mail, unless the new group doesn't permit no mail. If so, the person's subscription would be Special Notices.)

The only issue is that they must login with their Yahoo Groups email address. Once they login to Groups.io, they can change their email address.

I am assuming you DIDN'T set up your group as "announcement" in Spam Control. That setting only allows the owner / moderators to post.

Re: Picture Attributions Changed

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thank you Chris.

IMO, the interface needs work. For example, it should be possible to paste in an owner's name, rather than having to pick it from an unsorted list.

In doing it per your instructions, I'm puzzled. One of my groups with this issue has two Owners, myself, the Founder, and a co-owner.
The orphaned pictures have all been assigned to the co-owner. Do you know how the orphan owner is assigned by Groups when there are several Owners?

Jhn; it's unremittingly tedious; trust me I know.

The process is as follows:

  • Go to the photo the ownership of which you want to reassign.
  • Click on Edit
  • Find the box called Owner
  • Click on the drop - down arrow at the right hand side of the box.

This brings up a list of all your members' Display Names, but not in alphabetical order.
  • Using your keyboard enter the initial letter of the Display Name of the member to whom you want to assign the photo.
  • Continue to enter that letter until the required Display Name appears. Overshoot and you will have to start again; AFAIK there is no reverse gear!
  • Once found click on it and the photo will be reassigned to the new owner.
  • Procede to the next photo and repeat until you realise that you shouldn't have started...

Re: Bounce reason?

Susan B,

Is there any general opinion as to why members of a premium
transferred group are bouncing?
Generally, because the address had been bad before transfer, but Yahoo didn't detect that fact. See this section of GMF's wiki page:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups#Groups.io-after-the-transfer

Yahoo used to tell you why there was a bounce.
Yup. Before the 2013 Neo redesign they did a pretty good job of it. After that, not so much.

Groups.io does a much better job of telling you what's going on with message delivery.

Re: Is there a way to automatically respond to people posting in my old yahoo group telling them to move to groups.io? #yahoo

I changed my Yahoo group description on my groups. The new description informs my group members where to find us. And why we moved! It also informs Yahoo, if they happen to read it, that we need more than a glorified email group.

Group Description

THIS GROUP HAS MOVED

New Location for Group

/g/? Group Name

We have moved in order to preserve our vitally important historical information, our photos of our ancestors and documents and our precious archives of files and attachments.I

Notice to members:
All group activity and messaging will be at the new location. Participation in the group is only possible at the new location.?
Therefore, all members of this Yahoo group are required to also be members at the new location. Members who leave the new group will also be removed from the Yahoo group.

Is registration required?

If you find you need to, you can set up and activate a pending subscription notice. Not too much work. Just about all happens automatically. But it might save you some grief.

Ken KM4NFQ

Thank you for your reply Dano.

In the past I have joined groups that requested a reason why I wanted
to join. I may consider doing that if I start to get too many of the
wrong sort of people in the group. I just don't know what the wrong
sort is at the moment. I guess I'll play it by ear. I would rather not
have to do too much extra work if I don't have to, because it takes
time. Then again, having to actively moderate a list takes time as
well. I prefer to let a group moderate itself if at all possible. The
theory is that most of the people joining the list will want to stay
on topic. But I know how that can go. So I'll just have to see who
joins, and what the dynamic of the group is. The main thing, for me,
is to not have to be putting too much time twiddling with the
dashboard in the background.

to you as a matter of the group's "culture" - whether you're open

by some criteria.
I set all my groups to moderated. If the messages are visible to members and there's no approval process for members it lets anyone in to scan your archives. In one group, I ask applicants to tell me why they want to join. I get all kinds of answers, but it tells me most people are interested. On the others I can just watch for suspicious members. I think of it like having a screen door on an open back door - it doesn't keep out a determined wind, but it helps keep the flies out.

Jessica,

doesn't seem to be happening. As many of the members from the old
group are emailing me seperatetly.
What are they telling you?

followed step by step Messge says it's in progress.
Can you screenshot that message for us? Or at least quote the message exactly?

Are you at a screen like the screenshot in Step 5 here:

But this has been going on for about six weeks
Then you are stuck somewhere, Groups.io is caught up. Go over the sequence in the wiki page above and do every step in order.

Re: Is there a way to automatically respond to people posting in my old yahoo group telling them to move to groups.io? #yahoo

Adam, Chris,

Set it to "Announcement" and they will not be able to post and that
/should/ get their attention.
In the controls of a Yahoo Group that would be on the Access Control tab of the Control Panel. In the row for "Messages-Who can post" move the selector to the Moderators Only column.

Or, as I did, on the Moderation tab select Moderated, and use the Reject with Reply function to remind the stragglers about the change of posting address.

Transfers caught up #migration

There was a message on Friday morning from Mark (Groups.io).?From November 15, 2019

Hi All,
As of this morning, we've completely worked through the backlog of Yahoo Group transfer requests. It took 29 days, but we did it. :-)
I've removed the option to pay for a priority transfer.
?I'm still only responding to support emails from premium group owners right now. There's just too much otherwise. Also, the beta group is still moderated.
A reminder: please get your transfer requests in by the end of the month.
Thanks,
Mark

If you are still in limbo, you need to find out what's happening. Check the status of your transfer.

People are reporting really quick turn around. Earlier today someone said: "taking about an hour from go-ahead to completion."
