Re: How much time does it take to manage a group?
Ken KM4NFQ
Thank you for your reply, Dano.
?
I am very glad that I asked this question on this group because I am getting some really good replies. Everyone has been very helpful. I really appreciate it. I have a lot to learn, and it is going to take some time to get the hang of it. It is nice to know that there is a Wiki, and experienced help from this group if I get in too far over my head.
?
Regards,

Re: fixed width line in footer forces sideways scrolling
Thanks, Donald, for the useful link. I definitely am not coming from the perspective of a lawyer, but of an advocate for my community, so rather than getting heavy-handed about the law, I'm more interested in the spirit of the ADA, where we all learn to help make the world a more accessible and inclusive place for all of us. I'll contact Mark to let him know that we're having this issue, and hopefully he can figure out something simple to do to make the digests work better.
Thanks so much, everyone! Isis |
Re: Translation for Groups.io?

Hi everyone,
All set up ready for you and for content.?
Landing page lists separate pages for different languages This is a subsidiary table of contents for the different language pages. I created the first entry on the landing page. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Language---xxx Use New Page to create a page for your language help page. This is the style for the URL for each language page. ?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Language---xxx URLs are automatically generated by the title of the page. So there may be a page titled Language - French, one titled Language - German (or?Deutsch - your preference). After you create a page, copy the URL for the page. You will list the page on the landing page (not the main Table of Contents for the wiki). Don't worry - the beauty of a wiki is that we can undo. You can compare pages and revert to an older version if necessary. Useful to put a brief explanatory note of what you changed.? I hope the is clear enough! The only thing you have to be careful about is not losing the page you are working on before it is linked - hooked into - the landing page menu. You can see all the pages of the wiki at the bottom of the page - a blue button Pages. But there are lots of them. That's why I suggest you adopt a style - languages - French, languages - Greek, etc.? And there is a search box at the top of the wiki screen! Re: Group messages
Jules,
I have had my group transferred which is great.By using the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer mechanism, or otherwise? The messages were transferred over and put in a main folder. What do you mean by "main folder"? Are you referring to the Messages section of a primary group, or something else? I tried to export the whole messages and download to a zip file as theDo you mean that you used the Export Group Data function in your Groups.io group's Settings page? Or do you mean that you used the getmydata function at Yahoo to export your Yahoo Group's contents? I had created a subfolder and uploaded the message directory but II'm uncertain where you created this subfolder, but in either of the export cases of my prior question the exported messages are in mbox formatted files. That format cannot be directly opened by any browser that I'm aware of to view the messages. One would need to extract the mbox file(s) to your computer's storage and import them to an email application, or a file viewer that supports mbox format. I want members to view the messages for references but only in aI don't know of any method to make those messages easily viewable and searchable directly from your subgroup's pages. The difficulty is that viewing files from web sites is subject to each member's browser settings, as well as to the configuration of the site itself. In many cases the member will be required to download the file to view it on their own computer. Re: Messages to aplus.net domains not working
Indeed. Mail service--likely to include Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Post Office Protocol (POP), and Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP)--for aplus.net domains is managed by a different company, carrierzone.com. Aplus.net has contracted the mail service out to Carrierzone. The way they do this is via something called Mail Exchange (MX) records. There are records stating that any mail for aplus.net should be delivered to a carrierzone.com server. You can look at Wikipedia for more detail. Obviously there are two ways to investigate this problem. Both take some persistence.
You just have to keep contacting them both until someone acts. I've been through this exercise before, with a couple of different companies. My guess is that Carrierzone sees the 100 messages a day coming from [GMF] and decides they are spam and dumps them. If they also send a message to G.IO, G.IO will send you a message stating that you've been unsubscribed. There's a link in the message that resubscribes you when clicked. This has happened to me three times?since the Yahoo cutoff announcement. Sure enough, each time I find two days worth of [GMF] messages in my Spam folder. Once I click the link in the message and move the messages from Spam to Inbox, things start working again--until the next time. Larry |
Re: How much time does it take to manage a group?
Ken -
Just a couple thoughts. I have some larger groups I've brought over from Y! and some smaller ones I've created on groups.io later. Some have very internet savvy members and others are . . . Well, let's just say that on the information highway they're cruising up the parking lane with their flashers on - but they're enjoying themselves and contributing! Some of those guys I keep on moderation just so I can jump in when they post and make sure they're doing okay. I don't see those more than once or twice a month and really they take very little time. I've found that by-and-larger, if folks are told right up front that they're expected to be courteous and criticize *ideas*, not the person posting them, a group can get by with very little effort. My largest groups have dealt with some pretty contentious issues and managed to get through them in a very civilized manner by following that basic tennet. I really think that letting members know your expectations right away, and even put them in the group guidelines avoids a lot of problems. Overall I'd say that Gerald really gave you the most important answer with his comment: I don't think nearly enough people know it, but this group (GMF) is a big partMy recommendation would be to start your group and invite a few people. Most of the setup recommendations are the result of literally hundreds of man-years of group ownership/moderation experience both here and on Y! and it's predecessors. If you run into something you're not sure how to handle and you've checked the GMF wiki, then bring your questions here. Dano |

J Forester,
I've sent [email protected] two invitations to join each group. You don't say if you've followed the steps that lead up to inviting the transfer agent to your Yahoo Groups. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups If you haven't then the invitations have been discarded. If you have then you know where to look to see the status of each of your transfers.
