Re: Group Not Listed in Public Directory

Hi

If I were you, I would edit your home page.?

For example, you don¡¯t need this:
New members will be moderated initially but will receive full group status after their first post is approved.

That could be in your welcome letter. Plus the group settings show on your home page.?

Or this - you are interested in becoming a SCARS member, we invite you to apply for membership at our website listed in the Group Information listed below.

There is a join button below. ?
But do keep your group initials if that is well known.?

Also only part is carried over to the directory ?Put the most important first.?

Good luck in growing your group!

If you send an invitation from the subgroup for those people to join it, everything should work smoothly.? If not, it should be reported to support.

There has been a lot of discussion about the 'join flow' for subgroups on the beta group and it has been tweaked several times, but seems to still have glitches.? A decent work around is to have them join the main group, then you can Direct Add them to the subgroup.? Or they can just join the subgroup on their own if it's not set to Restricted.

Re: Non-member request to join sub-group subscribes only to parent group

Hallo,

Same experience.

That's the reason why I now opend most of my subgroups so that the users can join wdirectly without further restrictions.
For me it is OK that way. The non-members can send a join request and if they are members of the main group I trust them if they are not they have to follow the subscription process of the main group.

Also I set every new member to moderated for the first message.? This should prevent to be intruded by spammers.

But yes, it would be nice if there where a better subscription processing for the subgroups. I would love to have the possibility to use a matrix to configure what member of what subgroup has what joinig right to what other subgroup.
That would make the process much more better. If then someone is member of a very well controlled subgroup you could configure higher rights to join other subgroups and so on...

Also a better working notification processing for the subscription process would be very helpfull.

At the moment I don't get any emails because the groups.io email server is blacklisted again :-(

Regards,

Isidro

Re: groups.io smtp server blocked again

Hi Duane,

thank you for your response. Yes I reported that also to [email protected]

So they are maybe lost.

I hope that groups.io will do a good job in monitoring blacklisting and removing from the blacklists.

Thank you,

Isidro

You'll need to contact [email protected] about this.

And can I see the messages online that were send to owner ?
If it's from a member, you go to that member's record and choose Owner Messages at the top.? If it's from a non-member, then no.
You can check your Activity log to see who sent it.

To revert an edit:
Go to the wiki page in question.
Click on "xxx revisions" at the upper right (where xxx is the number of revisions made.)
Click on the middle column (reason for edit.)
Scroll to the bottom of that page and select select Delete This Revision.
Confirm that you want to delete it.
Done.

groups.io smtp server blocked again

Hi,

the groups.io server is on blacklists again. So I miss important subscription requests to our groups.

mail.mxde.net: 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [66.175.222.12] blocked using dnsbl-1.uceprotect.net; IP 66.175.222.12 is UCEPROTECT-Level 1 listed. See

Could you please check that out and whitelist your smtp server?

And can I see the messages online that were send to owner ?

All the Best,

There is a "New Page" button, if that's what you're talking about.

Rich; in order to make the above work you would need to give editing rights to your membership, and that would be "wiki - wide".

That might not be a good idea.

I experienced the same thing with a recent test. It's a recipe for a lot of miscommunication.

As a test, with an unsubscribed e-mail address, I attempted to join the subgroup directly. I got this reply:

-------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your interest in Groups.io and the
group **subgroup** @maingroupname.groups.io. To complete
your subscription, please reply to this email.
-------------------------------------------------------

I replied, and the moderator approved the subscription, and then I got this welcome message:

-------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the **maingroup** @maingroupname.groups.io
group at Groups.io, a free, easy-to-use email group
service. Please take a moment to review this message.

You can visit your group, start reading messages and
posting them here: /g/maingroupname

The email address for this group is: [email protected].
...etc.
-------------------------------------------------------

No warning is given of the fact that the user had joined the main group and not the subgroup.

The subgroup's welcome message is included in the mail (in the middle of it, somewhere), so I suppose one could add in big capital letters something like "YOU ARE NOT YET SUBSCRIBED TO THE LIST THAT YOU WERE TRYING TO SUBSCRIBE TO, DESPITE APPEARANCES".

I don't mind that one can't join a subgroup directly, but then at least the responses from Groups.io should make it clear that you're trying to join a group that you're not yet allowed to join, OR should make it clearer that you need to re-attempt to join the subgroup a second time after you received the first welcome message.

Dave -- That's really not very surprising. For some time, people were forced to create a Yahoo Mail account as a precondition of joining a Yahoo Group. Many such accounts have subsequently fallen into disuse.

Anybody have any ideas why this is?
Yahoo has been purging inactive Yahoo Mail accounts over the past year or so. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/32891421#18222?for a discussion.

Actually, Yahoo originally gave just 7 days notice (maybe even less) before the time where new attachments, files, and photos would be allowed.? That was quickly changed to 14 days, and the 2 months is when these files would be deleted. ?

I understand the need to change business priorities, but for a company as large as Yahoo/Verizon they clearly failed in their handling of the situation. ?

The individuals concerned were probably on no emails, so your "old" group never sent emails to them. Then the members either changed email addresses and didn't update their Yahoo memberships either because they had forgotten about them or - worse case scenario - died.

When they were migrated to Groups.io part of that process involved them being sent a message that disregarded the "no emails" flag, and those emails promptly bounced.

As (I think) Bruce said the other day a 554 error is permanent. You can in all probability delete those bouncing addresses without worrying about it, although my personal preference is to check the individuals' activity records just in case there is evidence of recent involvement.

Why are Yahoo addresses in the majority? For the simple reason that Yahoo addresses are so commonplace. If you look at the list of "surviving" members I would expect you to find that Yahoo addresses are in the majority there as well.

You are, I suspect, the most recent person to comment on a commonly experienced phenomenon.

Re: Non-member request to join sub-group subscribes only to parent group

It would be a better user experience in this scenario (request to join sub-group by person who is not yet in main group) if they were added to both in a single operation.
Absolutely!? If accurate, the process Yusuf describes is going to be a mess if not streamlined. ?

Ah; your group is publicly listed; it is this one, and is the second one in the search return that I linked in my previous post.

However, this has revealed another bit of weirdness in the way the A - Z list of groups is set out. By way of example the "A" list sets out all the groups with an upper case A first, and once it has exhausted those it starts again with a list starting with a lower case a. It is not truly alphabetical; this may be something for beta once the hue and cry has subsided.
