Re: Best way to follow a topic?

Hi, Frances,

A member wants to only get emails for threads that she follows.??

Is there ever a button or link displayed in the web interface for Messages that allows a user to follow to the thread? I haven't been able to find a combination of Subscription and Advanced Preferences that would allow that.

THANKS for your work here in the forum.

IMPACT of changing Group Name

Just a reminder that if you change a group name, make sure you change the welcome letter to be consistent with the name change. It does not automatically repopulate.

If you want to receive posts by email to different addresses then yes.

If you want to send from different addresses, but are happy to receive on only a single address then you can set up a single account but provide an email alias different from that address that is the "account holder" from which you can send.

As has been stated many times here, this is a user-to-user group, no one from groups.io management monitors it.? For bugs, you report them to [email protected]

There was an update of sorts about this posted this morning:

The email team has been in touch to confirm that they have investigated the issue and are now working on a solution.? Unfortunately this is more complex than they would have liked which means a solution is not likely to be available until early next year 2020.

single account / multiple email addresses?

This may have been answered but I was unable to find it in the archive.

Under Yahoo, most of my group subscriptions were under one main address. But for some, I used a different address. E.g., for genealogy work, I subscribed to genealogy lists using a separate email address. But I was able to manage it all under one Yahoo account.

Am I able to do that with groups.io, or do I have to create a separate account for each email address?

Thanks!

Re: Which "custom Welcome notice" will the transfer agent use?

Samuel,

2. What other information is included in the message that is sent to
members who have been moved? Can I see an example of such a message
anywhere, please?
I've just pasted one here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Added-Message-for-YG-transfer

This was collected over a year and a half ago, so if anyone has a newer example with changed wording please update it, or send a copy to me off-list.

Brian -- A stab in the dark:? Do the people having problems all use BT Mail?

There is a known bug (not a groups.io bug) in the manner that BT Mail handles the +command email addresses (it strips off the part after the +). If this is happening, you should see a series of notes in your Activity log along the lines of "non-member xxxxxxxx @ yyyy.com attempted to send message...".

Again, just a wild guess...but it's the only reason I can come up with as to why it might not be working.

If you mean what I think you mean that won't and can't work. Show yourself as present means what exactly? A subscriber to that particular group? Logged in and watching? Just being a subscriber to any given group doesn't mean that you are reading everything that turns up. Some subscribers set their mail delivery to "No Mail". Does that mean that they read posts on the web UI as and when they are submitted, or does it mean that they only read things as and when the mood takes?

Just having every profile visible in the directory doesn't actually tell you who everyone is, if only because some people use Display Names that don't reveal their actual identity.

Next time you get a Read Receipt for an email you have sent have a look at what it says; It announces that the email has been displayed on the recipient's computer (or whatever) but it reminds you that they may not have read it.

Max -- In groups.io, a subscriber owns his own Profile, and controls its visibility to non-Moderators/Owners.

If you want your subscribers to be able to see each other's information, see Admin>Settings>Privacy>Members Visible. Note that doing so will NOT allow mere subscribers to "click into" a member record or perform any admin functions.

Hope this helps,

Re: Directory not showing all members

Hi all,

It would be really nice to have the option as a list owner (of a restricted group) to decide that it be a premise of the group that all members be displayed in the member directory.

While I understand how particularly in a public group that it be a privacy option for members to choose whether their profile is displayed, it would be nice in groups like the one that I administer that you show yourself as present so that contributors can see who is receiving their contributions.

Perhaps this could be an option that only shows up to owner/moderators for restricted groups.

I am relatively new to the GIO community.... is this discussion forum effectively a feature request forum also or are there other avenues (emailing support@??, etc.)

Re: For a group discussing medical info

Hi Brian -?
When determining your settings you might also want to consider what role you want your group to play. ?Do you want to only keep family and friends updated or do you want to encourage feedback or help schedule visits, etc.?
When I was going through cancer treatment I set up an invitation only blog with updates and the general info I was comfortable sharing. I sent an email that notified friends of the update and url, which also allowed them to email back. Only a few very close folks were on an email where I shared more graphic information and feelings.

You may want to not only make the group/messages private but also not list in the directory. That way you can send invites to those who should be included and also require approval.?

Please be very careful with the information you share or discuss on the group and ensure it is information the primary person - the patient and center of this team - would be comfortable sharing and who she would want it shared with. One of the worst things about being a patient is not having control of the direction your life is taking, especially if those around you feel you may not be competent. It¡¯s important to include the patient in things as simple as updating family and friends - even if you think they don¡¯t hear or understand.?

Re: How to collect donations from members to support cost of forum

Derek:
That's what we did for my ControlledVocabulary group. I've been using Paypal for years, but didn't realize you can log in and then go to https://paypal.me/? to create a link.?

I put this on a link on the main site on the forum page during the transition, but then took it down.?

The end result will look like this, with the [nameyoucreate] being the name you type in the Paypal.me setup.?

https://paypal.me/[nameyoucreate]/20.00USD?
You have to specify a default amount, but the person using the link can change the dollar amount after arriving on the page.?

BTW, I tried putting that into the "description" of the home page (under the general section after going to ADMIN >> SETTINGS), and it shows in the main home page for my group (see example at):
/g/ControlledVocabulary
Note you do have to use the "insert link" feature in the toolbar to make it active.? For those without a separate website, you could also put this link into that section in "General" part (Just below the Description).?

David
