Re: How long for groups.io to become a member

This is the same problem I have been experiencing for last 12 days. Transfer page says they received the yahoo invite and will respond shortly - that was 12 days ago; but no actual response as to accepting invite has happened yet - they have not actually joined the yahoo group yet. Others on this list advised me to send the yahoo invite again. I did - and all that did was to update the transfer page with note that there was no need to send the invite again. I am also at a loss as to what to do next.

Best Regards,
Arthur Goodwin

Dennis -- Did you go to your Yahoo Group and send an invitation to [email protected]? After you select your Existing Transfer at /yahootransfer , what does the status box at the top of the resulting page say?

The transfer agent will not join the Yahoo group without an invitation, and sometimes Yahoo fails to send an invitation even when you tell it to.

You'd need to find someone familiar with GG to get a correct answer for that.? Probably better to check around over there.

Once you're in the transfer queue, your only hope is to contact support.? Worst case, you'd delete the information from both groups and start over.? Since the group(s) are already premium to do the transfer, a second one shouldn't incur another fee, just more time.

Re: To spend more $$$ we need more data on rate of que processing?

Deane

My group is now #90 in the queue and it's been moving at almost exactly 1 per hour since over the last 7 days (since I started keeping daily notes!).? I forget what the total was when I started the process on 22nd October, but it was in the 400s.

I'm aware of another group run by a contact of mine who paid the extra $200 and it was actioned within 12-15 hours over this last weekend.

Hope that helps
Jeremy

Re: Change destination for one of my group transfers

Hey Dale,

I think we are all dealing the best we can with this change. I am very sorry that you had such a major glitch. It is solvable. It is simply a matter of time and all of us paying attention.

There are a lot of errors in your note. It may be that there were errors in your transfer instructions. See if you can parse out what happened, and then make a plan for how you can get to your goals. I think io is a godsend for all of us. Without it, we would have lost everything. And I have used Yahoo for 20 years and built my business around it.

Stop thinking about it being something *they* did. Maybe they made an error, maybe you did, but take a deep breath and figure out the details. No one died, it is just a matter of YOUR getting settled and focused and fixing things. At least that is what I keep telling myself :)

That means that it was accepted by Outlook.? It doesn't tell how long they may hold it before passing it on.

Re: Change destination for one of my group transfers

Yes, I do understand what *go-ahead means*. Since as Dale said a lot of this transfer is manual, I was assuming that it was possible for a human to do a replace on the destination.

I have changed the name of the group. ?If there is a way to let the transfer system know the new destination, I can do that. If not, I will forfeit the payment I made for that particular transfer.

Here is the information:

Original request asked for a transfer from radiantrecovery@...?to [email protected]
I have moved the members from [email protected]?to [email protected]?and will proceed with the discussion there.

I would like the messages from radiantrecovery@...?to go into [email protected]

And for the record. I totally get how stressful this is for all of us. This was NOT an error on my part, it was an understanding that came as a result of the process. I am simply working on the best way to achieve something that is important to me without creating a problem on your end.

That worked! I am so glad because other members will now have an easier time of it too.

Updated that page of the wiki based on Chris' detailed instructions. The old one was a little too barebones!

The crucial bit - don't use the check box for that. Click on the name or email address.
(The check box has other options, but does not promote someone to owner or moderator.)

When I was setting up transfers last year, I used a different email address to create the groups at groups.io, as you suggest above.

After the groups transferred I then had two accounts, one as owner and one as a regular group member. I did not merge these, but instead I set the owner account to no mail delivery on each group to avoid getting two copies of messages by email.

With the two types of membership, I can now view the group's features and operation as either owner or member, which often helps in resolving other members' problems and questions.

Re: #membership Members with Registered Emails, But Nowhere To Be Found #membership #bug

It is also possible that her account had the desired address listed as an email alias. A setting that the member can make in the Account->Login section. Perhaps the yahoo transfer process is populating that in some cases.

Thanks for your input. Her so-called registered name and her preferred email address were the same. I searched both of them in the member directory. Also looked for her last name which was already in the member list under her old email. I tried every possible search. But that so-called registered address could not be found. It was obviously somehow connected to her original membership, but I have no idea how that happened.

i wouldn't have mentioned this, but I just ran into it again.

Re display names: I am going through my member list and adding them so they now appear in messages. But that had nothing to do with this problem.

Susan; further to my earlier post there is a risk to all this unless you know your appointee for second owner well and trust them implicitly.

All Owners are equal, and Groups.io does not discriminate between the "real" owner and a reserve one. It is thus possible for an appointed owner to ddemote the real one and even remove them from the group they created. The same risk exists if someone appointed as a moderator is given Set Moderator Privileges as one of their Permissions. An owner has that permission by default, along with all the others.

Re: #membership Members with Registered Emails, But Nowhere To Be Found #membership #bug

Thanks, Bruce. ?The member I was referring to was indeed a member of other groups at her new preferred address. ?So when I run into this again, I will get the OK from the member and then delete and direct add, which works.

Re: Member Switchover Timing

When I migrated my Yahoo group over, I did not allow new members to join the new group. When the migration finished, I received a summary email explaining how many messages, files, photos, members were transferred, including a list of members that were not transferred. There was only one address not transferred, mine, because it was already subscribed.

All the join dates of the members were preserved, but mine was not. It¡¯s a tiny bit of nostalgia lost, but not too bad.

If I were to do it over, I would have used a separate email address as the owner of the groups.io group, let all the members transfer in, then merged my new account into my old account to retain my join date.

I just completed an experiment for Bruce... One of my existing members joined our new empty group here, with the same email address, before the import. Bruce wondered it she still retained ownership of her messages AFTER the import, so I asked her to edit a message from 2016 in our newly imported group.

Voila! She was able to do so. Ownership was retained!

Also, her edit was sent for re-moderation and approval to post.

Hopefully, our little test will allay one worry about moving members and getting going here while awaiting import.

On the other hand, there is still a potential gotcha. As far as I know, you must use the same Yahoo account email address for your account on groups.io.
I have wondered about this and the possible implications in a sort of detached way.

Let us consider a hypothetical person who is currently the member of a Yahoo group that is being migrated to Groups.io. That person will (obviously) have an email address associated with that Yahoo group.

However, the same person may already have a Groups.io Account covering other Groups.io groups. and might have a different email address as the account identifier. The migration process will not realise that the two people are in fact one and the same and will set about creating another account using the email address imported from Yahoo.

I know the resultant muddle is not insoluble but I can well envisage quite a few confused people trying to work out what has happened.

Re: #bug #bouncedemails Updated Email Addresses Still Show As Bouncing #bug #bouncedemails

Ann, did you follow the instructions for dealing with bouncing??

It says in a postscript:?

[2]: The Recent Bounces list in your subscriber's member record will display activity from your group only. With the understanding that his account's bouncing status could have originated from failed delivery of messages in a different group, you may have to direct him to look it up himself (/account?page=bounces) to get a full picture of what's going on.?

I have updated a correct email address for some bouncing members, and the correction shows up in the member list. ?But when I look at the bouncing list, these folks still show up as bouncing even though the corrected email address also shows. ?Does it just take time for my correction to work and the member to be no longer in the bouncing list? ?Or do I have to delete the old membership and direct add the new member with the new address? ? This does not seem necessary since the correct address shows in the member list.
