Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log, and the 18th's:

(There was no change log last week)

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: For premium/enterprise groups on annual billing, we now send out
a courtesy reminder two weeks before billing them.
This was cited in an answer to a question, it seems like forever ago.
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/35555435#19588

NEW: Testing prioritizing support emails from group owners of premium
groups.
That's something that was once promised on the Pricing page, but Mark removed it because it wasn't implemented, and he couldn't figure out how to express what it would mean.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

INTERNAL: Various software changes and additional machines to deal
with the extreme massive influx of new groups.
API: Added signature to member_info object.
API: New endpoints: newpoll, updatepoll, getpoll, vote.
API: New endpoint: registeruser.
API: New endpoints: newwikipage, getwikipages, getwikipageset.

Please call out any you find significant.

Shal

Re: Transferring Yahoo group after October 28

Well, this is strange. I still can't gain access to my own group "Management" functions, but I was able to request and receive a download of all my groups, even the ones that I'm just a member of. There is a folder for each group, with sub-folders for files and messages, but not for photos and attachments. Only the downloads for groups with owner privileges included photos. That's not a huge deal since I can manually download the photos without owner privileges, and there aren't that many of them.

At least now I can restore all the members and invite them to join the new groups.io group, and I guess I can upload the files and photos.

Better than nothing, but I wasted the fee for the yearly upgrade since I couldn't use it. Had I known at the time, I would have created a master group, and put everything else in subgroups.

I'll see if I can do any of the other items that you mentioned this evening.

Re: Applied member approved by system ?

Bill Carns

Shal,

We have a closed group and, for the first time, I had a new member apply for membership, and while in the process of vetting him, I found that the system had approved him. As it turns out, I went in to approve him and found this, so no harm - no foul I guess, but it worries me. There are two of us in that management loop, but I checked with the other guy and he had not even been in the system.

Have you ever seen this happen before. I am moderator of Collins HF Comm Users Group in Groups I-O.

Thanks.

Bill

Re: how to directly add a member to the group

Mendy,

Did you invite her?
Or was she transferred from YahooGroups?
Or did she send a "subscribe" email to your group?

What group plan do you have? Basic or Premium?
If you have Premium, you can direct add. Instructions have been given previously.
If you have basic, you can invite her.
Here are instructions -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Inviting-new-members

Has she looked in her SPAM folder already?

Me| How can I go about directly adding her

1. You can upgrade your group to "Premium"
for a month (US$ 20 per month), then an
additional "Direct ADD" member option will
appear in the "Admin" menu.

Or...

2. She can ask to join the group.

3. You can send another invite to her.

I opted for the first option in my
group.

Walter -- As the notice states, someone else has already initiated a transfer for that Yahoo group. Each Yahoo group can only one active transfer at a time.

This interfering transfer could have been done a long time ago, perhaps by another member of the group who later discovered he couldn't proceed....or maybe you yourself have accidentally set up duplicate transfers.

You need to figure out who did that and have them delete their incomplete transfer so yours can proceed.

Re: Who can initiate a transfer from YahooGroups? #transfer

Katie,

Is it only a group owner that can do this, and not a moderator?
Correct. One must be an owner of the Groups.io group to set up and run the transfer.

I just paid the premium membership fee prior to starting the transfer,
I think that part is ok. That is, I don't think the person doing the transfer has to be the same person who upgraded the group.

Please advise.
You'll want to as the Groups.io group owner to (temporarily) promote you to Owner role, or have that person nominate someone who is an owner to run the transfer.

On the Yahoo side it doesn't matter who invites and promotes the transfer agent, but someone needs to be either an Owner of the Yahoo Group or a Moderator with sufficient Privileges. The important privilege is the ability to "Add, remove, and change moderator privileges" - that's the one needed to promote the transfer agent.

Re: Who can initiate a transfer from YahooGroups? #transfer

OK, my colleague just made me an owner, and now the group shows up, so I guess that's the answer.? I was confused, though, because I thought since I was able to pay the premium upgrade fee that meant I was a moderator with billing privileges, and I thought that gave me sufficient access.

Re: Who can initiate a transfer from YahooGroups? #transfer

Here are detailed instructions in our wiki -?

2.1 Return to the bookmarked page (/yahootransfer). Click on the big green button at the bottom that says "Set Up New Transfer."

2.2 Enter the name of your Yahoo group and the name of your groups.io group in their respective boxes. The groups.io group is conveniently selected from a pick-list of those groups that you own. Do NOT enter any domain information (i.e.: leave off @yahoogroups.com or @yahoogroups.co.uk), just the group name.

2.3 Click the big green "Start Group Transfer Process" button at the bottom of the page.?
(You have now completed Step 2 of the instructions)

Was your Groups.io group not in the dropdown menu? A basic question - I am assuming that you have created a group in Groups.io to be used as your destination?

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups

The screenshot below will illustrate.? On the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer Group page, under Groups.Io Group, the group I want to transfer the YahooGroup into does not show up when I click in that box.

Re: Finding [email protected] in my members

Hi,
?
Do these steps:
?
After you log in, click on ¡°management¡±
?
image
?
Then click on ¡°manage members¡±

image
?
Then click on ¡°joined¡¯
?
image
?
At the point at which your screen looks effectively like the below (showing the join date for [email protected]) you have succeeded in getting in the queue.
?
Once that happens, change the status of that identity to ¡°moderator¡± by clicking on the member name at the left.? That will bring up a screen like this, but before moderator status awarded:

image
?
At that point, groups.io can suck down the data needed to get you going on groups.io.? There¡¯s a long line that you can cut in on by paying the extra $200...
?
Hope that helped.

Skip, in the queue, finally...

I finally received email that they've accepted my invite to transfer my yahoogroup -
?
But when I go to search for them as a member in my members list, nothing comes up.? Is there an easier way to find them?? Or does it take some more time before they actually show up in my members list?

Thanks for any heads up you can give. It's been a stressful week!

++++++++++++++++++++Hello,

By inviting [email protected] to join your group Quiltville@..., you have taken the first step towards transfering your group to Groups.io.

IMPORTANT: Yahoo Groups has been very unreliable lately. We will do our very best, but there is a good chance that we may not be able to transfer all of your messages, photos or files. We will tell you which ones we were not able to transfer. Also, the migration queue is several days long at this point. Please be patient as we work through the backlog of tranfer requests.

Here is what you need to do next:

  1. Make [email protected] a moderator of your Yahoo group. You can uncheck all moderator privileges if you wish.
  2. Return to the transfer page when you are ready to give the go ahead to transfer the group.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

Cheers,
The Groups.io Team

Re: Who can initiate a transfer from YahooGroups? #transfer

Yahoo is very glitchy at the moment.? I have successfully transferred groups where I was a moderator, not an owner, and I have had groups where I was the owner not allow me to add groups.io as a moderator for several days when things suddenly clicked into place.? So I'm not sure there is an answer to your questions.? Some are saying that only owners can transfer groups, not moderators, but I know from my experience that that is not true.

Re: Photo albums image sizes #photos

Thanks for the timely response, Duane! I've tried the max size combinations and it doesn't seem to have an affect on smaller images. This really isn't a big deal at all and I think the answer for us is to avoid smaller photo uploads.

Re: Who can initiate a transfer from YahooGroups? #transfer

Katie, you said "when I try to proceed, the group is not showing up as a choice for groups.io"
Not sure what you mean. Do you mean that you don't see it in the list of public accessible groups? Perhaps your group opted not to. If I have missed the mark, ask again.

About who can do the transfer - it is only the YG owner or a moderator with the right status -?
MPORTANT!! While any owner of the group@ may initiate a transfer, only that owner will be able to manage it to completion. Other group owners will not have access to the transfer status via the Existing Transfers list. If you have owner role in the group by way of more than one log in address you can manage the transfer only via one of them.
?
ALSO IMPORTANT!! ?At Steps 2 and 3 of the process, someone must invite the transfer agent to your Y!group and promote it to Moderator. This does not need to be the same person who initiated and manages the transfer from the Groups.io side, but this person must be either the Owner of the Yahoo group, or a Moderator with invite and promote privileges. If you don't have this capability, and are not working with someone who does, work on getting these privileges now. Otherwise, the transfer cannot proceed.

Re: How do I find the status of my Yahoo Group transfer?

Hi

Your subject line and question in your email don't match - at least I don't think so!

You asked:?When I authorized the transfer of my Yahoo Group to Groups.io I did so as moderator. ?
After creating the Groups.io page I am shown as an "Owner". ?
I now know that only the person who authorized the transfer has access to this feature.
I know I screwed up somewhere but can this be fixed?

Duane answered that - how to stop being the owner of your group.

If you want to know how to find the status of your YG transfer, it is here in the FAQ - #8.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups

If neither of us got it, please ask again, rephrasing it.
