That's a good question, and one I would like the answer to, also.

I'm currently moving photos from MM to MMSanctuary's subgroup, and I almost uploaded them into files too...fortunately, I caught it.

But Dano is right, ownership of all of it becomes me, which isn't the case. So I left it where any member can edit or upload to each.

Photos - moving them and the ownership question

I've encountered a situation in a Y! group I'm planning on moving. I'm asking here, because I don't want to bother beta with something that may have already been touched on. I'm hoping maybe Shal or Duane will remember.

A member uploaded a bunch (something like 17) of large photos. They're useful images and everyone gains from them. Unfortunately, he uploaded them into Files instead of Photos and they're not in a folder. I created a folder for him and asked him to move them. Another good Samaritan moved them for him. So the images are in the right place, but the ownership of those images is changed. I can see this happening again after moving, so I have the following question:

In groups.io, is there a method of moving files without taking ownership of them? And alternately, is there a way to assign ownership to someone else for files the system sees as yours?? I can see where one of these options would be very useful for moderators just doing some housecleaning and organizing.

Re: Member having trouble accessing PDF file

He has a newer Mac, maybe a year old. I will mention Preview to him and see if that's an option.

Thanks!

Hi Anita,
?
What OS is your group member using?? I understand that his computer is a Mac.? But, the operating system on my Mac is OS 10.6.8 or Snow Leopard.? I don't use Adobe Reader.? It is sometimes problematic.? Preview is my default application for reading .pdf files.? Preview is a standard application on the Mac computer up until at least the OS I'm using.? Not sure about the newer Mac OSs.?
?
Have your member try to use Preview to open .pdf files and see if that makes a difference.

Re: Member having trouble accessing PDF file

Anita,

I figured his problem might have something to do with security settings,
but I'm a Windows person, not a Mac, so I can't even tell him where to
look. Anyone know the answer?

Hi Anita, when I try to download the applications i get this. (Adobe
Reader blocked this site.)
I'm also a Windows user but I must agree, that sounds like a security setting. But I'm not sure whether that would be a browser setting, a Reader setting, or somewhere else.

It sounds like his browser invoked Adobe Reader directly to display the .pdf file. There may be an option in the browser to download the file instead, or to choose another program to display the file (but probably not many other choices that can read PDF).

Member having trouble accessing PDF file

A member of my group experienced problems right out of the chute. I posted some PDF files in our files area. then sent the direct link to the group. This user has a Mac computer, if that makes any difference. I would re-send the special notice to the old yahoo group. It still exists and everyone is still in it. The special notice will not have reached the problematic members in the IO group (the ones you wanted to reach) because they're the ones not receiving the emails in the first place. I would make sure to clarify for them that the new, re-sent notice is coming from the old yahoo group because you wanted to make sure to reach them. I also would suggest that they respond to you offlist rather than in the yahoo group, to minimize confusion. Anyway, that's what I would do. can't answer the rest of your questions. Good luck!

Can I suggest you try Thunderbird again? If so here are some tips to I keep it running smoothly.

1) Create a lot of subfolders.
2) Create filters so mail goes straight to the subfolders, instead of to your inbox and then you manually drag it to a subfolder.
3) If you are manually dragging a lot of mail, or deleting a ton of spam, then compact your folders weekly or even daily. Failure to compact will screw up your Thunderbird!
4) If you choose not to store sent mails in the same folder you are replying from, or you send out tons of mails, or a lot of mails with attachments -- then you will need to create subfolders in your "Sent" mail folder. At work, I break them down into 2 levels. Year; then person mail was sent to. Except for one email account that is monitored when I'm away. Because my co-workers need to know what my previous replies were, I set Thunderbird to keep those replies in the folder of the message being replied to.

Good luck.

Sara

Hi Ro,

I have sent a message to Microsoft Communities asking for help with this!? Hopefully they may be more help they have been at others when I written in with hotmail issues!? As even putting myself in address book and having myself as a safe sender I am still going into the junk box when I post to this or my groups!

Hi David,
As I have stated one of the forums I do have an Yahoo email account I have never used I did not like how Yahoo email worked from the start!? I have a few goggle ones I got back when Google first offed Email and you had to get a invite or something from someone else to open and an email account.? I used it for a while but google keep changing and I did not like how it started working.? Since back when I got my first home computer when Win 98 was first released I used Outlook Express at home and used Outlook at my job as I had to book meeting and such and compared people schedules so that all could be at the meeting.? I used hotmail as I could change ISP and not have change email address.? However MS in another of their moronic moments and they have had a few, made it so hotmail their own product would no longer worked in Outlook Express.? So I went to just dealing with hotmail on their server.? I tired Thunderbird and thought it was so so, but when it crashed and I lost everything I was about not to trust it again.?
I will find away to see if I can my messages from IO groups to stop going into my junk box.? However Gmail and Yahoo mail even free are not worth using in my opinion!? Hotmail is changing again, and it too becoming somewhat what I like Gmail.?
I use like things from google, however I found their search now to be far to broad and I removed it from any browser I use and I got tired of being tracked.? I know what I like and I know what I do not like.? Just like I will not use Yahoo or Gmail, I will not use IE they messed it up, I left and never looked back.? I used Safari until Apple stop offering Safari for Windows I went to Firefox!? If I cannot use Firefox I will use Chrome if I am in a pinch!?
I have used every OS that MS offer I used DOS at work then we went to 95, I had 98 and 98 Second addition, I had ME, I had XP when it was released I built and installed it on my new computer and when Vista came out I brought a new laptop with Vista on it.? I think I kept that laptop maybe 6 months before I sold it and went to using a Mac.? However I stopped working cause of health issue, and when my MacBook and then my IMac died, I went back to a PC.? I brought a new built computer with Win7 even through Win8 was out.? I had tired 8 on a friends computer I did not like it.? I am still running 7 and I am not in any rush to get 10!? Yes it has "all the things you love about Win 7" however it also has all the things I do not like in 7 and and crap from Win 8!? If I could afford it I would go back to a Mac in heartbeat.? However I am stuck using Windows, I prefer to their least sucky OS that is still supported!?

Hi Shal,

I will first trying going into Hotmail, and adding how my things from IO are addressed and manually putting it into safe sender as well as my address book.? Usually telling hotmail a few times it is not junk resolves things going into junk.? However it is not learning this, on my other hotmail account it puts things from me to me in the junk as well, but those are truly junk meds and sextape type emails that I even get in Yahoo without ever using that email addy.? I have learned it seems spammers seem to lifting emails some how from EBay.? I know I had an account I never got that type of junk, until I opened an EBay account with that as my email, and it is different from EBay nick.

MSN and Hotmail are both Microsoft products and if this I correct, I believe they now employ the Web version of Microsoft Outlook mail.

You may want to consider creating a Yahoo or Gmail account or some other flavor and use it with your Groups.IO memberships. I have not had a problem with either of those going to my spam folder or in getting email
from Groups.IO. I also have had no problem getting Groups.IO mail to my Temple email, which is academic until one knows that Temple University uses a Gmail corporate account for its members. Backup email accounts are valuable for many reasons and you can save aggrevation trying to educate
Microsoft to the wonderful service that Groups.IO is. An alternative account is a much quicker fix and will most likely solve your email reception problem.

Everyone have a great week.

By the way, I also agree with how wonderful this Groups.IO service as stated in an earlier message, probably on the Beta discussion group.

Consider creating a Gmail or Yahoo Mail account or both and join with these accounts and post with them once you have joined the lists you want to be a member of with these accounts. Make each an owner and you will have back up owner memberships as well if you are a list owner or moderator. If an account goes South, it is very good practice to have backup ownerships and memberships on lists that are important to you or that you own or moderate. I have had no spam issues with either of Gmail or Yahoo Mail with emails coming from Groups.IO.
