Moving a message to a different topic

Members are so creative at messing up. I've had a member reply to a previous message, however he did not write it on the message he intended to tie it to. So now I have a message that needs to be moved to a different topic. Is there a way to do this, or should I just delete it and have him resend?

When I try to add borders to my tables, set my <dt> tags to bold, set my <dd> tags to be on the same line as the <dt> that preceded them, or any other advanced styling that should be a part of html coding it shows it the way I styled it in the editor, but when I save it, the wiki page has deleted all the styling work, with table it makes it impossible to see where one cell ends and another ends. is there a way to change the default style setting for the entire wiki, or prevent the style from being removed?

Re: WIKI page sidebars and footers

Sidebars and footers are designed for items you want to show on every page of your wiki. i use my sidebar to show an index of my wiki pages. you could use one of these for disclaimers if you your wiki offers advise in health or legal areas. Anything you want people to see no matter what wiki page they are viewing goes on a hooter or side bar.

Thanks for your replies.

On the positive side, it is on his to-do list:
I can only hope that Mark will fix it soon, Shal.

Re: Photo Album Sorting

Jim,

I do not see a sorting option for the albums at groups.io Is there
one?
Apparently not. I'm a little surprised there isn't any "sort" related items in the Photos to-do list at Trello.

There is a sort button within an album to sort the photos, but as you say, none for the list of albums. This seems like an obvious candidate as a request in beta@.

I think all lists should have sort and filter/search capability, based on whatever data is available about the list items. Ideally this would be something the site could do in a uniform and intuitive fashion. Now we have:

Sort, search box, and filters
Activity logs

column header links (with reversal arrows) plus search box
Admin:Members, Admin:Subgroup memberships, Files

column header links (with reversal arrows) plus search button pop-up
Messages/Topics

column header links (with reversal arrows) without search
Sent Invitations, Drafts, Chats(?), Database

Sort button with drop-list of orderings
Photos (within albums)

Alphabetic (fixed order)
Integrations, Hashtags, Member Directory, Photo albums,
Wiki (pages drop-list)

Date (fixed order)
Calendar (list view), Subgroups (date of latest post)

Arbitrary groupings
Settings

I wouldn't want consistency to go too far and overwhelm clarity or usability, but this feels to me like a bit too much ad-hoc and not enough of that consistency that Mark likes. ;-)

Re: Search options

Jim,

As Frances mentioned, the "site:" keyword in Google search is a very handy way to get results from just one web site. You can use it to get results from public archives at groups.io in general, or you can target it to a specific group. For example:

site:groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum "super glue"

But of course, as J noted that only works if the group has public archives.

Re: Banned a member but still getting message approval requests

I found the issue that caused this to happen but I thought I'd share
it here in case it happens to one of your groups.

We had forgot to uncheck this option:

Allow Non Subscribers to Post

so anyone who knew the group's address could attempt to post to the
group. I would guess that any non-subscribers would always be on
moderation with that setting checked but if we approved the post, we
could have them posting to the group. Since our group has no need for
this, I unchecked that option and I think that will stop the banned
person from being able to attempt to post. I don't want to see message
approval requests from banned members showing up in my inbox.

Hi Jim

It seems that it will work if the archives are open to all.?
Try this search in Google Advanced Search (or type it in) -?
disease site:
ECIR is retrieved and the message archive is open to the public.

If the message archive is for members only, only the main (home) page of the group is retrieved - if the search term is general enough.
For example -?
travel site:
(Be sure you are logged out of ?first!)

However, for those groups who have open archive, perhaps this could be set up to make it easier for group members.

Sure, but not for groups with private archives.

Re: Search options

Good afternoon...

Over the years I've learned that when a site's search engine fails that Google can many times overcome.? For example...assuming that you are searching for "super glue",..a Google search for something like ", super glue" could return meaningful results.? You may notice that I'm being a bit vague here...because it doesn't always work...however it seems to more often than not.

Re: Search options

Ary,

Is there a way to search the mail database for an exact match?
As you've heard in beta@, the unfortunate truth is that the search feature in groups.io does not provide exact searches.

I believe what is happening is that the index of the message content used in searches has been built using an algorithm that identifies word roots. The search queries are too. So the results contain all instances that contain the same word roots.

What hasn't been supplied is a means to escape that mechanism and return only exact matches. I've tried diving into what documentation I could find for Elasticsearch (the engine being used) but unfortunately what I've found is all developer info (how to install it, how to call it), not user info, and no hints I gleaned there worked to provide an exact match.

I think Mark has already indicated that he doesn't consider this a bug (of the sort which should be reported to support) but rather the lack of a feature - which makes the discussion in beta@ appropriate to that forum. And of course, work-arounds and suggestions if anyone has them are perfectly appropriate here in GMF.

On the positive side, it is on his to-do list:

using quotation marks around the phrase works.

In general, even using quotation marks will return close matches in addition to exact ones. That's the problem. The reason is that Mark is using a search algorithm based on common word roots. So a search on "disabled" (even within quotes) will also return disability, disable, etc. If the phrase is unique enough, then putting it in quotes works. But it does not work in general for individual words.

Ary, using quotation marks around the phrase works.?Like "easy instructions" or "photo album".

This second retrieves photos album, photo album, photo albums.

Search options

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi all,

?

Is there a way to search the mail database for an exact match? I cannot find it. Searching for something in a couple of thousands of mails is terrible now, unless I do something wrong.

When I search for a word or string I get everything that has only a part of the word or string in it, while I just want to search for a specific word. I get a lot of complaints about this in my group.

?

Cheers,

Ary

Re: Two groups interacting when a subgroup is NOT the answer?

Frances, you beat me to it! I was going to volunteer to write up this topic for the wiki, since others were so helpful in answering my questions. Let me know how I can help -D

Photo Album Sorting

We just moved two groups from Yahoo into one group at .? The move went very well.? Part of the move included 120+ photo albums.? On the Yahoo platform it was possible to sort the albums by "Most Recent".? I do not see a sorting option for the albums at .? Is there one? ? ?Note: before asking this question I Googled, I looked in the Wiki for this group and for groups,io, I joined the beta group, and I have read the list at Trello.? I don't see anything.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can't belong to a subgroup without being a member of the parent/main group.
