I found the issue that caused this to happen but I thought I'd share

it here in case it happens to one of your groups. We had forgot to uncheck this option: Allow Non Subscribers to Post so anyone who knew the group's address could attempt to post to the group. I would guess that any non-subscribers would always be on moderation with that setting checked but if we approved the post, we could have them posting to the group. Since our group has no need for this, I unchecked that option and I think that will stop the banned person from being able to attempt to post.
