Re: Banning

Donna,

In my case, I don't think the offender will try that but, even if she
does, my group requires approval and I can just get the IP off the
application.
While sometimes better than nothing, note that using an IP address to identify someone has limitations.

On the false positive side, often an entire household, office, library, dorm, or other location will use a single IP address at its internet router. In some cases entire cities can be behind a single IP address.

On the false negative side a person may be able to be assigned a new IP address as simply as turning their cable/fiber modem/router power off and on again. Or they can temporarily use their phone as a WiFi hotspot. Or they can go to another location. Or they can use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to route through a different IP address.

All of those, the false positive and negative, are probably unlikely for most would-be group members. But someone persistent enough may try those if they find that simply getting a new email address didn't work.

Happy to help.

I've also added a wiki page at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/20-Invitations-Limit, as this question seems to come up on a fairly regular basis.

Laurie -- This happens whenever you send more than 20 invitations within a 24-hour period. See??for an explanation of why this limit exists. Yahoo groups has a similar requirement, designed to thwart those who would set up a group and use it for spamming purposes.

Trying to convert our membership from another Forum board to Groups.io and it appears this is going to be problematic.?

How long do I have to wait until I can resume sending invites?

The remaining invitations in your most recent batch will usually go out within a few hours. However, because groups.io support is on vacation until 4/29 so it could take a little longer than usual (ref:?).

Go to Admin>Invite and click on "Sent Invitations" to check status (or wait for the promised email notification). Once your latest batch does get approved, I suggest you send *all* your remaining invitations at once. You can do this by uploading a plain text file,?containing all of the addresses, one address per line (and nothing else). In doing so, you will probably experience a second delay...but two delays are better than multiple ones.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Suspicious file attachment in pending messages section #spam

An alternative would be to go to a commercial office center with computer work stations available. Such as FedEx Office. Sign on to one of their computers -- thirty cents a minute at FedEx in New York -- and try and open the email. The commercial places have very robust malware detection and AV programs. If the attachment looks hinky when scanned the computer will warn you and won't let you open it.

I agree with some of the others, however, when I occasionally get an email that looks suspicious I delete it on sight. I even go to the Recently Deleted folder and delete it from there. Especially if it arrives in a group pending file, I don't hesitate, it's history.

Hi, I start a test group on 9 march 2019 (with another mail), and some time later (26 march) i receive e-mail seemingly from this email account with only a jpg image including a ransom request.
There is no direct link with the group, but an other member say to me he got the same thing (the day he was added to the group).

Take the subject line and just plug it into the search window on your web browser and you'll probably get dozens of hits. These are most all very vague, toothless threats. They likely list an old password that the recipient used at one time in the threat.

If you can go into "Properties" without opening the message, you might find it interesting to check the email source. My email handler gives me a menu to do this by right clicking on the message instead of left-clicking. Check on the source and scroll down to see where it originally came from. The original source of one I got came from
"Received: from net182-35-245-109.mbb.telenor.rs ([109.245.35.182])"
You'll note the nation code at the end of the address is RU - Russia. The first from address above this is my own address which has been spoofed to get around my spam filter.

These are just people trying to get money by phishing. They're probably buying old information sold by people who have hacked into old data somewhere. (Remember all those addresses and personal data stolen from Yahoo a couple years ago?) I find it interesting that most of these don't even tell you how to get bitcoins in the first place, showing an incredible ignorance of their target subjects.

The best thing to do is delete them without opening them.

I hope this helps.

Go to Admin>Members and select "banned" using the blue pull-down menu button at top left. On the resulting page you will find an entry box where you can pro-actively enter someone's email address.

Note that banned members can still read group messages if your message archives are public (see Admin>Settings>Privacy>Visibility). Banning also does not prevent someone from attempting to join your group using a different email address.

In some ways this might be simpler to implement, but it might provoke more fears of abuse.

Also, it would be too tedious for words unless there were a way to perform it in bulk. So one is back to needing at least a "virtual subscription" so that there's a posterid to search for (that's the key to the "All Posts By This Member" function). But this one would be simpler, as it would only need to provide a posterid, no need to have anyone "access" it.
I like this solution!
My problem actually I have 2 defunct email address "benoit.dumeaux@..." and "benoit.dumeaux@..."

I have a former member that caused me some VERY unneeded grief before unsubbing and I would like to be able to ban her from seeing the group or reapplying again. I know I can remove and ban members but how do I do it if they're already gone. I know it's possible since she's managed to ban me from several groups she's at least part owner of that I've never been a member of. It's very childish and I just want NOTHING to do with her.
?
In my my 15+ years of owning groups here and on Yahoo, this is the first time I've had to deal with such an objectionable person. I realize people can have differences of opinion but this was beyond nasty. I find it quite upsetting.

Thanks for any advice.

By "this email account," do you mean the group address?

A [totally false] scam about recording people in compromising positions using their own computer's webcam has been going around the 'net in various forms for nearly a year now. They ask for a bitcoin "ransom" because it cannot be traced...the originating address is generally spoofed.

If you can't find the same message(s) in the online message archive, then it didn't come from the group. The fact that a new subscriber got one of these the same day he joined is probably just a coincidence.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Probably...if they arrive from an email address that is not subscribed to the group. Open your activity log (Admin>Activity) and check for an entry saying something to the effect of "Non-member noname (at) jacquielawson (dot) com attempted to send message "Happy Easter" via email

If you want to allow non-subscribers to post, there is a checkbox for that at Admin>Settings>Message Policies. Such messages will be moderated, so you will have to intercede to ensure they go through each time. The other option is to create an Email Integration...see?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/16068?for instructions.
