Re: Changing group owners #groupowner #howto

Brian Vogel

By the way, and I should have added this in my previous message, I can find no documentation on the Help page about how one transfers ownership.? Transfer of ownership is referred to, once, but there is nothing regarding how to do it.

I need to go back to Mark's message about hiring a technical writer to pull together a Groups.io "User's Manual," to see if he mentions having said writer take a long and careful cruise through the GMF archive.? That would be a very, very good idea to see all sorts of things that must be included in said manual.

Am I safe in presuming this works "in reverse" too?? ?That is, once one has been named owner of a group, you can take away owner from the existing owner?

I have a desire to do this, and there's not anything underhanded afoot, there was an oversight where when the previous owner withdrew they were left as owner, which I doubt they want and I know I don't.

Re: Have you created a Tips and Tricks document/file?

I think several people have made files specific to their groups.? You're also welcome to use the information in the Wiki here to create your own, /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home? Since anyone (public) can see this Wiki, you could use pointers instead of creating an entire page/file.

You might want to wait a bit though because a manual is in the works - ? No sense duplicating effort.

Lisa,

Have any of you created a "Tips and Tricks" type document for your group?

Locking a topic by e-mail: Is this possible?

Brian Vogel

Most of the groups in which I particpate on Groups.io have a focus on technology related to blind and low-vision related software and, on the whole, the vast majority of the participants, including group owners and moderators, participate via e-mail.

I was shocked to learn the other day that it is possible to "Like" a topic via e-mail simply by responding with a message body containing either "like" or "+1."? ?

This makes me wonder whether a group owner or moderator can lock a topic via e-mail.? ?It makes as much sense to me that this be able to be done by a response to a message, only from an owner or moderator with permission to lock, that contains only "lock" in any case mixture of letters.? I can't find anything in documentation one way or another in this regard.

Have you created a Tips and Tricks document/file?

Lisa Franklin

Our group moved from yahoo to groups.io about a year ago (so thankful we did!) but we still have a lot of members who 'remember' some of the old yahoo features and do not understand all of the groups.io features.

Have any of you created a "Tips and Tricks" type document for your group?? I am think of things like 'how to change your delivery settings', 'how to create an account', etc all in one place that I could post to our group regularly both for older members and new members to use.

If you have and would share here, I would very much appreciate it!

Are you certain that a Rejected Subscription message has been written and stored?

3) As I said, in my group most rejections are due to the lack of a personal introduction, but not all of them. Is there a way to set up different rejection notices, so that moderators can choose the most appropriate one?
No; there is only one Rejected Subscription message available, although as you have realised there is the option of using a Note to Member.

In your later post your wrote: However, I have tried a different approach and set up a Note to Member Notice, with a view to sending it as a standard message when rejecting a subscription request, but I found out that the system does not save the message.

Are you certain that you clicked on Add Notice after you had composed it? Have you gone back to your Member Notices tab to find out exactly what messages there actually are, and that the Active Message checkbox has been checked? It may be that you think the message is there waiting to be sent when in fact it isn't.

Chris.

Re: Help required with rejection process #settings #howto

Thank you, Duane.

I see no reason for the customized rejection message not showing in the drop down Notice menu at the bottom of the message box when you write to a prospective member you wish to reject.

However, I have tried a different approach and set up a Note to Member Notice, with a view to sending it as a standard message when rejecting a subscription request, but I found out that the system does not save the message.

From the Settings Menu I chose Member Notices > New Notice > Note to Member > Add Notice, but the system did not save my message.

Re: Integration with Google Calendar #calendar

The issue with newline characters in the ICS file has been fixed (as mentioned in this weeks' changelog on beta).? As well as loading correctly in Outlook, it also now works when syncing to Google Calendar.

Mark believes the issue with 'all day' subgroup events appearing on the wrong (previous) day is time zone related and he will investigate further when he returns from holiday w/c 29-Apr.

Andy

Which is something that I find highly problematic from a philosophical perspective, though I do know that the software supports it.

Though the owner of a group should have extremely broad powers, if there is years of content generated almost exclusively by members they have every bit as large a stake in a group being ongoing as someone who may have created it does.

That being said, trying to work out any sort of defined, "order of succession" is so impractical that there's no way any forums software developer could establish such.? I just hope that most group owners will have to common decency to find or have arrangements for a successor whenever one would become necessary.

As far as I'm concerned, digital or on paper, once something's "published" it's published.? You should not be easily able to unring a bell.

Re: Need Approval for Invites #inviteapproval

f1mqj,

- I sent an invite to 50 people of our club, igot the message and see
nothing more in the "sent invitation" list
That list should show you the status of each of those 50 invitations. The normal status would be Sent or Accepted, but Failed is also possible.

-? when my invitation request will receive moderation (checking that
what i send is not spam but looks like a true group data), all the
pending invite will be sent and added to the "sent invitation" list
I'm not certain what the Status shows during the time before Groups.io approves your Invite list. From what you say they aren't even listed until then. That's not too surprising.

(a warning message at this time could be a good point),
I agree.

At the very minimum I think the site should put up a banner at the top of the invite page after you click "Send Invitations" explaining that there may be a delay for approval, and that there is no need to re-submit the addresses.

(it could be gained to be writen in the pricing sheet as a common spam
restriction, perhaps with response delay shorten/guaranteed for
enterprise paid subscriptions).
I doubt Mark will want to do that. The pricing list used to list "premium access to support" or something like that for the paid plans, but he eventually removed it because he didn't want to promise something he didn't know how to quantify. This might fall into the same category.

There is already a feature that won't allow the last owner to leave the group.? I don't see a way to force them to add another owner (although several of us highly advise having a backup) in case of an emergency.? If the last owner wants to leave the group, they can always delete it.

Which, to my mind, is a honkin' big security hole that Mark should patch.? Unless you are Owner you had ought not ever be able to make yourself one.? That is the one, and only, thing that I feel should be completely exclusive to the Owner role.? The Owner should be able to add another one, if desired, and probably should not be able to remove him or herself as Owner until and unless there's someone else in the group who has that role.? Ideally self-demotion should probably not be possible.? The other Owner(s) should do that when desired.

Re: Need Approval for Invites #inviteapproval

Thanks for answers, could you confirm what i understand on how it work :
- I sent an invite to 50 people of our club, igot the message and see nothing more in the "sent invitation" list
-? when my invitation request will receive moderation (checking that what i send is not spam but looks like a true group data), all the pending invite will be sent and added to the "sent invitation" list

I understand this spam restriction that seem to be 3 years old, so it might be writen/explained somewhere ... because it seems to me of common use to invite a lot of people when starting a group (like migrate a previously existing group from other platform) (a warning message at this time could be a good point), a warning could also be included near the "send invitation" button, that could be more clear and probably avoid multiple sending for people that doesn't understand why it doesn't work (my first reflex was to remove some sent invitation to make room for new one and send again the file -> giving twice the job to moderator because of lack of warning.

But this restriction is writen nowhere, i have to reach this forum to get the knowledge, not very obvious for non english speaking moderators/owners (it could be gained to be writen in the pricing sheet as a common spam restriction, perhaps with response delay shorten/guaranteed for enterprise paid subscriptions).
Best regards

Right; it's been raised on beta.

I'm pretty sure I asked for it once long ago but some group owners didn't want it shown to moderators, for fear of hurt feelings or arguments ("why won't you let me xxx"); in my own view that concern is silly. Worse than silly, it reflects the kind of manager that gives their subordinates the "mushroom treatment".
The term micromanagement springs to mind, amongst other things.

This is not currently a group- or user-configurable option.?I would prefer that *all* of the database controls be at the top, not just the Add button.

2.? Can the list display be forced to allow only a single line for each entry.
If you set a width for any table column, the others will be scaled to accommodate it (note: these widths are in PIXELS, not characters).

Somewhat obviously, whether everything will fit is highly dependent on screen width, the number of columns in the database table, and the length of individual table entries. What looks good on your computer may not look good on someone else's.?

I find that I get my best formatting on all devices by?leaving all column widths at zero (the default). You might want to also go through all your table data and remove any non-breaking spaces, replacing them with actual (i.e.: html-friendly) whitespace characters.

Hope this helps,
