Re: Groups.io sustainability

Marv,

I worry more about Groups.io's business plan than Mark getting run over by a bus.

The pricing model is often referred to as "". Yes, it is a thing. Not always successful, but then no business plan is foolproof.

But I will say that signing up for the paid premium service will help Groups.io stay around more than anything else its users can do. Treat the free service as a free trial, not a free lunch.

Yup.

That is of course the bet that a Freemium business is making: that the free level will attract a large community of users, and that enough of those users will convert to Premium to pay for it all.

So one key element is finding the right features at each pricing level. But of course that's true of any product family that has various models, including physical products that don't start with one that is free.

When asked by users about "donating to the cause" Mark has suggested using the Premium for one month plan as a convenient way to make a small contribution on your own schedule and budget.

Customising the invite letter?

OH6NT

Hello all.

Tried to find n answer to this: Why can't I customise the invitation letter fully?

Our group is in an overseas country, an hardly anyone speaks english, so most of the standard ivitation is obsolete to us. It would be nice to be able to write the invitation in full in our languages (Finnish and Swedish).

Best regards, Thomas

Re: Groups.io sustainability

I worry more about Groups.io's business plan than Mark getting run over by a bus. Groups.io seems to me to be extraordinarily non-exploitative as free services go. I observe that even one-man shops with a solid business plan can often get through disasters like the incapacitation of the principal, but flakey businesses never last. I don't pretend to understand Mark's plan, nor am I criticizing it, it's his business. But I will say that signing up for the paid premium service will help Groups.io stay around more than anything else its users can do. Treat the free service as a free trial, not a free lunch.
Best, Marv

Re: Groups.io sustainability

What happens if the earth blows up?
Remember the old homily, "He who hesitates is lost."
Putting that question on GMF doesn't get an answer, it's simply blowing in the wind because Mark doesn't follow this group.
I moved our group of almost 3500 with 160,000 messages over 3.5 years ago when there was far less functionality and it was still a hell of a lot better than waiting for Yahoo to sell out to Verizon while Ygroups would go silent for days at a time.
Ask your question from Support@... instead of where it cannot possibly get an answer.

Is there any way to delete photos in a message from attachments without it being sent to the person who wrote the letter?

I know I can go one by one in the photos email folder. That takes forever.

If I go to attachments I can edit it and delete a? bunch of them but then the person gets notified.

Thanks

Anita?

Short answer: No.?

Longer answer: At a minimum, each message sent via a mailing list must provide some means to unsubscribe from the list.

Really long answer:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Footers?

Re: Groups.io sustainability

Although I can't seem to find it at the moment, Mark addressed this on the beta group some time ago.? He does have backup in place to keep the site running.? I doubt that there would be much, if any, additional development, at least for awhile.? And support would likely suffer in the short term.? The only one that actually knows the answers though is Mark.

You only have to do it once per person. I think it¡¯s a small price to pay for safety.

Perhaps you're only considering yourself while ignoring the reasons given to you for the need to screen out spammers.

At best, these two checkboxes are labelled incorrectly. It was my understanding that the first checkbox already "allows" messages, the second is (supposed to) affect only moderation.?

Anyway, I tried the same thing as Andy did in my group(s), with a hashtag set up so my test messages didn't get emailed. With a Subscriber account of the parent group only, and these checkboxes checked in the subgroup, I was able to successfully post to the subgroup...both by email and online.

However, now the Privacy setting seems to be broken. Previously, I permitted main-group members to read the subgroup message archive. Now, if I try to do that with the same Subscriber account mentioned previously (same one I posted with), I get an error message along these lines:

template: messagelib.html:344:27: executing "DisplayMessageFooter" at <.Sub.FullName>: can't evaluate field FullName in type interface {}
Something weird is definitely?going on with this new feature.

Pre- approve? Not sure what the "pre" refers to; posts are either approved or they are not. Pre - approval is not a thing AFAIK.

In any case if any individual is not prepared to put in the work required to either own or moderate a group then perhaps owning or moderating a group is simply not for them. Expecting Groups.io to permit spam protection to be bypassed to save owners and moderators a little bit of work is simply not reasonable IMHO.

The group I moderate has most members on moderation, and we cope without feeling over - burdened in any way. The members seem to cope with occasional moderation delays without complaining. You could always set new members to "Un - moderate after..." or is moderating up to 4 posts from new members still too much bother?

Groups.io sustainability

Hi,

I've been using groups.io since the start of the year, evaluating it for a potential move of 1000+ members of my club from various Y! groups and another Forum to here.? I think all of the site updates and messages from support I have received have come from Mark Fletcher.? It seems he does an excellent job in maintaining the site but I'm wondering if he is a single point of failure? What happens if the proverbial bus comes along and Mark is suddenly not available?? Is there a team behind Mark that is capable of continuing development and support or will groups.io cease to be supported?

Thanks,
Andy

Site updates - Allow Parent Subscribers to Post

Hi,

I've seen the chatter about allowing members of parent groups to post to subgroups but I'm not sure if this is working as it was maybe intended.

I have these settings for my subgroup:

If I post (via email) from a member of the parent group that is not a member of this subgroup then the message is moderated as it was before when only 'Allow Non Subscribers to Post' was set.

If I uncheck the 'Allow Non Subscribers to Post' option and post again, the message is rejected with:

groups.io gave this error:
Your email address, andy_wedge@..., is not subscribed to that group. To subscribe, send an email to [email protected], or visit ?

If the 'Allow Non Subscribers to Post' option is required and messages are moderated, then 'Allow Parent Subscribers to Post' on its own seems to serve no purpose as it stands.

Regards,
Andy

Notwithstanding your post in beta, I very much doubt he will reconsider such a broad issue. Review my answers in this topic for my reasons for saying that:

For your request to get any traction I think you'll need to present Mark with a reason that none of the existing choices are sufficient for your needs. So far as I've seen you haven't presented a compelling use case for bypassing the existing Spam Control options. I don't think "It should be the owner's choice" is sufficient, you'll get further if you can outline why you need that choice.

Allowing individual groups' owners to endanger the ability of groups.io to remain a non blacklisted email provider to those people is far more important that the minor effort required by owners to properly educate their subscribers about this issue.
It is simply a case where the good of all far outweighs individual desires.

Bob is right. This syndrome has a name, the Tragedy of the Commons, where individual needs combined in isolation produce negative results for the group as a whole.

It's nearer 4,000,000 based on my most recent member's ID (3745311)!? And those members belong to over 11,000 groups.
