I was initially having difficulties uploading it, but it turned out to be internet issues on my part rather than Groups.io.? Saving it in Files rather than in Photos seems to serve our purposes for now.??
Thanks!

Re: Signing in with Google or Facebook - data security and group promotion

I've spent some time on the OpenID standard, which governs the borrowing of authentication from third party providers like Google or Facebook. When you use a third party to authenticate using OpenID to Groups.io, the third party becomes aware that you have authenticated with Groups.io, but under the standard, the third party does not have access to the information you have exchanged with Groups.io. Using third-party authentication does have vulnerabilities. If, for example, you use Google for authentication and your Google account is hacked, the hacker gets access to your Groups.io account also. The hacker can log into your Groups.io account using your stolen Google password.

On the privacy side, the third party may not have access to your group's posts to Groups.io, but they know when you logged in and therefore they have clues for spreading their net to nab more information about you. For example, if you use Google's gmail, Google scans your email for information that interests them. (See your Gmail Terms of Service.) Knowing that you have logged in to Groups.io may trigger something in Google's information collection system to scan your email in a certain way, or simply knowing that you log into a certain Groups.io might trigger certain Google ads. For example, I understand that being able to target persons with certain chronic diseases (like diabetes) is quite valuable in on-line advertising. Being a member of a chronic disease group on Groups.io might trigger a spate of targeted drug ads. I don't know that Google does this, but it is possible.

Like Duane, I avoid alternate third-party authentication services. I don't worry much about privacy anymore. Basically, I've given up on it. Instead I use ad-blockers and realize that I have the same level of privacy in the world as I once had when I lived in a rural neighborhood where everyone knew everyone's secrets. But I do worry about trusting third-parties and I use multi-factor authentication whenever I can.

is a bit dated now, but I provide some detail on OpenID and other similar standards.
Best, Marv

Glad that it helped!

Be advised that photos/albums and files also have subscriber-owners...and messages, for that matter. Groups.io provides for some level of restriction at that level for handling those, too. For example, in some groups (like this one), you and select Moderators can edit your messages, while a regular subscriber cannot.?Although databases have more available Permissions settings than photos and files, the concept is the same.

I don't see an option for disallowing an export which would be nice because these particular databases have email addresses in them, oh well.
Restricting the table export function wouldn't accomplish much. Someone could instead just select those email addresses from the display, copy it to their clipboard, and paste it wherever they want. Read access is read access...if a subscriber can see it, they can copy it.?

Bruce

Upfront, I should say that I don't use alternative log ins.? I did a little reading this morning about using alternate sign ins.? In general, it's not recommended, but is quite often done for convenience.? It should be obvious that the alternate site will now know that you have an account at Groups.io, but only limited information should be exchanged in order to accomplish the login.? Since there is no tracking done on this site, there should be no way for the other services to do additional tracking.? The only information they can 'see' here would be the login procedure.? Depending on a person's settings for the alternate, there may or may not be additional information added to their visible account on that site.

Hi Foon,
Please help me find instructions on how to make it a restricted group?
Using the menu options on the left go to Admin > Settings.?? Scroll down to the Spam Control section and you will see the restricted membership option checkbox at the top of the list.

If you are thinking of getting (or have) a premium plan then this gives you additional options for adding members to your group. See the GMF Wiki at

Databases have subscriber-owners, and access can be restricted at the table and row level, depending on the desires of that owner.

Open each database and click the Edit Table Properties button at the top. On the ensuing page, scroll down, make sure all the Permissions settings are the way you want them, then click the blue Update button at the bottom.

As Shal noted, the only thing you can do with a native PowerPoint file is upload/download it from the files area.

That said, basic PowerPoint-like behavior can be achieved by a series of linked wiki pages. I have a bunch of PowerPoint files that I hope to convert to that, someday. I did one of them, as best I could, and it's proven to be a tedious/frustrating process. It's entirely possible that "someday" may never come.

Signing in with Google or Facebook - data security and group promotion

Hello
I am going to promote the group as "private, no adverts, no data mining, no tracking or friend requests".
Most existing users hate Facebook, most potential users love it.
If people sign in via Facebook or Google, do these companies start tracking them? Are these companies able to see the data on Groups.io? Automatic sign in might attract new users, but what disadvantages does it have? My account seems to sign itself in quite happily with neither of these being signed in, so I do not really understand what this functionality is.

I am going to try to promote the group saying that Groups.io is better at planning and coordination, and has more useful features (rather than just less garbage). Does anyone have any tips or ideas for me?
Thanks
John Clube

Re: Power Point Slideshow

Maureen,

Is there a way to post a slideshow such as Power Point on Groups.io?
There isn't a native slideshow viewer, one that operates within the context of Groups.io's web pages. Opening a photo in an Album and then using the left and right arrows (at the edge of the photos, not on the keyboard) to move through the album is a little bit like a manual slideshow.

That might be an interesting suggestion for beta: add slideshow controls to the viewing options for an album - allowing automatic presentation of the album's content.

You could store a PowerPoint file in the group's Files section. But as far as I know there aren't any browsers which will open that file format in-browser (unlike PDF and most image types), so the members would have to download the file and run PowerPoint (or a 3rd-party viewer) to view it.

Re: Polls

Yes you can create polls.?

Here are the options:

Additional Options
Allow multiple choices.
Only moderators and poll creators can view results and responders, regardless of whether the poll is open or closed.
Only display results when the poll has closed. Moderators and poll creators can always view results.
Do not show who responded to the poll.

Re: Owner message approval email notification

debihansen,

I have all the email owner notifications checked. The only restriction
I have is approval of the first message - but that is the only email
notification I am not getting.
One possibility is that they're going to your Spam/Junk folder.

You're looking for a message like this:

Subject: Message Approval Needed - [email] posted to [yourgroup]
From: [yourgroup] Notification <[email protected]>
where [email] is the posting member's email address and [yourgroup] is your group's message posting address.

Ah. Because I only looked on the page with the description itself. It didn't occur to me that it was a "setting".

Try using Shift+Enter to break the lines.

I haven't tested the Home page Description editor recently, but in a message body (New Topic or Reply) Enter inserts a line break, <br />, into the formatted text, whereas Shift+Enter inserts a paragraph break, <p> (and the corresponding end paragraph </p> somewhere later). Indent formatting operates on a paragraph basis.

Note: the Wiki page editor is the other way around: Enter is a paragraph break, Shift+Enter is a line break. The home page Description editor probably ought to work like the Wiki, but I've not tried it in ages.

When dealing with indents I find I usually need to experiment with Enter and Shift+Enter a bit to get what I want. Or else resort to the Source Code mode and subdue the HTML by hand.

Shal
Hi, Shal.

I got a chance this rainy morning to play with it a bit and discovered two things:

1) it doesn't seem possible to edit the group description after the group is created
2) in order to get what I wanted done, one needs to:

* type the line to be indented
* indent it
* hit shift-enter
* type the next line
* dedent it

In particular, the shift-enter doesn't automatically take one out of the indent.

I happen to edit on several MediaWiki style wikis and one thing that most of them have is a visual editor (like the description box) and also a text editor where one enters the markup (in the case of groups.io, HTML) directly and that might be a general purpose solution to various sorts of editing issues.? One can start with the visual editor, get most of it right and do a small fix or two in the plain text editor.

Best,

Glenn
