Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

If there's anyone here who uses the API please identify and comment on any API-related changes that would be significant to API users. I don't and wouldn't know what to comment on.

NEW: We extend expiration of the login cookie each time a person
accesses the site.
After some discussion here in GMF about the 30-day expiration of Groups.io's login cookie and Jim's suggestion that it be extended on
each visit, I decided that the only advantage of the status quo was its brute simplicity. So I posted his suggestion to beta. /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/27769196
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/27315749

NEW: We have a new, non-expiring cookie that we use to determine when
someone has previously been logged in, but whose cookie is now
expired. In that case, we redirect the user to the login page, with
a banner explaining that their login has expired.
This was originally proposed as an alternative to extending the cookie. I'm glad to see it implemented also as it will help people who visit the site rarely enough to have the login expire.

BUGFIX: Topic/Message filter by custom date range didn't work if your
date format preference was other than MM/DD/YYYY.
Channeling Maui again, "You're welcome!"

Fixing this introduced another bug which caused dates to not be
shown in the Topics screen.
Err, except for that.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

INTERNAL: In some situations we were not deleting all S3 data
associated with a group when the group was deleted.
CHANGE: Text changes to the Yahoo Transfer screens to make things more
clear - thanks Shal.
"You're welcome!"

Please call out any you find significant.

Shal

Re: Reply offering choice of replying to group or to sender

Richard,

I don't understand why you would want all messages, via the settings,
to go only to sender.
If everyone did that the Group would have no messages.
It may have plenty of messages, just no replies. Not all groups are about conversations.

One type of group that customarily operates this way are groups devoted to giving away unneeded items (Freecycle, Freegle, etc.). There a member posts an offer in the group, but all replies, which typically include personal contact info, go to the sender only.

Re: Group messages being blocked to @cox.net addresses

It appears that progress has been made on this issue and that our groups/io vs Cox.net troubles might be over:?

Woo hoo! Indeed! I was able to verify most of the Cox statement (below) maybe 15 minutes ago, but upon doing more checking I found that changes were being made by Groups.io as I was looking (actually were made a bit earlier and just now propagating).

If all the issues Cox mentioned are fixed this should fix not only the problems with mail delivery to Cox, but also head off problems elsewhere.

Groups.io nameserver DNS issues with cox.net email accounts. This is NOT a cox issue. Cox is NOT blocking groups.io from working. This is a DNS issue with groups.io with the DNS nameserver. Based on what I'm seeing the issue looks to be DNS related. We require valid nameserver reverse query and that is failing.

AIL: The following nameservers are listed at your nameservers as nameservers for your domain, but are not listed at the parent nameservers (see RFC2181 5.4.1). You need to make sure that these nameservers are working. If they are not working ok, you may have problems!

dns4.groups.io
dns3.groups.io

Missing nameservers reported by parent

In regarde to this issue who ever is running the groups.IO for the living community needs to reach out to groups.io and have them update DNS so the nameservers resolve properly. Cox can not do this it is not a server owned by Cox we can not touch this. Cox is not blocking this groups.io needs to update the DNS nameserver

This is not a monitored email account. Please do not send any inquiries.

Thank you,
Cox Communications

This looks very useful and may serve to finally fix this ongoing problem with cox.net!

FW: group.io dns name server issues

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Mark and Shal,

?

For the past few weeks my ssv forum group has been plagued with Cox bouncing emails for several hundred of my forum members.? I¡¯ve spent several hours talking with Cox Tier2 data people and so far they have not been much help.? I¡¯ve had my members who are affected, and computer savvy enough, sending ¡®unblock¡¯ messages to? ¡®unblock.requests@...¡¯ but so far no real help. I¡¯ve had limited success with unsubscribing then resubscribing some of the members who are showing as ¡®bouncing¡¯, but with over 2,100 members that is taking a lot of my time and isn¡¯t totally effective in remedying the situation.

?

One of my SSV Forum members did get this message from Tier2 Elite Support and I¡¯m passing it on to you to see if you can be of any help to me.

Thanks for any input.

Hi, That's called a blacklist and you'll need to ask Mark to unblock it for you. I asked him to for Lavabit and he did. However I did submit sufficient evidence that it isn't currently a disposable email service.

Apples and oranges. Lavabit is an encrypted email service, not a temporary email address service. Xemaps.com is a disposable email address service. Their FAQ page even says that some places block their domain because of this.

Re: Mysterious Email Problem

Tonight when I open my mail program there were over 90 emails downloaded, and 85 of them were from my group and GMF. All of them were delayed, until I got to the last one, and that was only seconds old. I sent an email to my group tonight, and I got a copy of it back almost instantly! That's the fastest I'm gotten email from Groups.io since this problem happened back around October 21st, and I'm crossing my finger Cox has fixed this issue.

Re: When will transfer take place?

It was between 1 and 2 weeks for my group a couple of weeks ago. It sat at
the 'received invite' for over a week before it all happened.

I've been a paying customer for 2 months already.

Suggestion: upgrade for one month to transfer ($10)

After reading several such posts, I went ahead and signed up for the one-month-only transfer option for premium. A bargain at $10, I thought. Less than a day after I upgraded, I received the message that [email protected] had accepted my invitation and would begin my transfer. Another 12 hours later, and it was complete.

I'm not claiming that everyone will get the same results, but mine had sat in the queue like yours for a few days and then movement happened. Could have been coincidence, but I think not.

Hi, That¡¯s called a blacklist and you¡¯ll need to ask Mark to unblock it for you. I asked him to for Lavabit and he did. However I did submit sufficient evidence that it isn¡¯t currently a disposable email service. I pay $30 yearly for this address. I signed up during a promotional period, so I got half-price.

??? However, I could easily abandon this address and get a new one somewhere else. Then do the same with that one 6-8 months later. All addresses are temporary in nature. Of course I¡¯m not going to do that for several reasons.

??? She could get a secondary address for groups.io lists. I did that for a while before it just got annoying, and I wanted to use this one. If the service is used for spam, it most likely won¡¯t be whitelisted.

Re: xemaps.com - invalid address?

Ah. That's probably it. Wonder if it's possible to make the error for these domains clearer -- something like "Blocked domain"??

Does groups.io reject mail to these services?
Probably.? From what Mark mentioned awhile back on the beta group, he's blocking as many of the 'disposable email' domains as he can to help keep out the spammers.? He doesn't make the list available because that would help the spammers find one that they can use.

xemaps.com - invalid address?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi -

One of my recently transferred lists from Yahoo has a member that uses xemaps.com (one of those services that maps a "disposable" address to your real address). During the transfer, her address was rejected as invalid. I've tried sending invitations, but everything to that domain seems to be marked as invalid:

Does groups.io reject mail to these services? Is there any way for her to subscribe from her address on this service? I haven't been able to find any documentation about this.

regards,
Vivian

can you search a phrase?

The wiki says you search??AND, OR and NOT. You can also search for quoted phrases.
However, when I try to search a quoted phrase I'm getting posts with the individual words.

I'm wondering if something changed since this wiki went up or if it's a temporary problem.

Thanks,
Rachel

Re: When will transfer take place?

I am also still waiting. I sent the invites 5 days ago, and the status at groups.io says it received the invite.?
I was planning on a migration cutover on Dec 1st, but that seems unlikely now.?

Re: Column Width in a Database

Thanks for that?information.
All of the column headings were typed in.
I will play around some more with each column first.
If that doesn't work Since I am the only one who is going to enter information in that database and I have it set so only?I and my Moderator can?view it, I can make the column that I need longer by writing jibberish as the heading to expand that column and then cut the other columns short by only writing one word in them.
?
I didn't know it was pixels.
I was putting numbers like 10 in the one I want larger and -5 for the one I want smaller.

Whatever number I plug into the Display Width box, it seems that no change has been made to any of the columns width. The size remains the same as if it was set to default zero.
There are limitations to how much adjusting can be done, due to dynamic html rendering requirements. For example, for a table entry of type "single line text," a browser may refuse to split or truncate a lengthy word, even if you make the column width shorter. So you may find that your browser refuses to render a column at a narrower width than the width of the longest word found among all the entries in that column. I hope that made sense.

Also make sure that all whitespace in table entries consist of regular spaces (ASCII 32). If you've pasted something into the table that contains html non-breaking spaces ( ), text-wrapping cannot occur there.

Perhaps most importantly, keep in mind that these Display Widths are in pixels, not characters. How things wrap will depend on both screen width and font size...what looks good on your screen may be horrible on someone else's. For that reason I recommend that you stick with the 0 defaults.

If none of this dissuades you from leaving well enough alone, it's best to play with these column settings one at a time. As a first approximation, try incrementally decreasing the width of the column you want to make narrower, while leaving the rest at zero. Once you get to the point that you like the width of this column you can then experiment with making the other one wider.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Main address changes when creating a subgroup? #subgroups

On Fri, Nov 16, 2018 at 12:28 PM, Ocean Elf wrote:

I also experimented with the subgroup functionality, and then decided I didn't want the subgroup.

But that didn't turn the newly created subdomain back into the bit before the @groups.io.

No it won't...but you can still access the group under the old address, which will be redirected to the subdomain one.

So then I discovered that the name of the subdomain could be changed, and thought I'd make it shorter.

Now there's another problem.

I can't access the group. It says server not found.

What the heck!?

Changing the name of a group or subgroup affects nameserver table entries. You will have to wait awhile until those are updated, at which point you should be able to access the renamed subgroup.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce?
