Go to Admin>Settings>Message Formatting>Subject Tag and change it to whatever you want.

For example, the Subject Tag for GroupManagersForum is [GMF].

any way to shorten group name in email subject line? #email

Our group owner created the group name as a big long descriptive name -- useful for people searching etc, but it makes the group name take up too much space. Some of our members using phones / smaller devices aren't able to see any of the actual topic -- just the group name at the front.

I have thought of changing the group name. Is there any other option?

Thanks!

Re: what to do about group owners and abuse

Hey Marvin,

Let me toss in my 2? worth here . . .

With the problems you describe why not start up your own group covering the same or a similar topic?

That sounds like an easy way to be able to interact with folks of similar interests.

Just FWIW . . .

Marvin, this thread sounds very much like the one you initiated back in May. If so, it's unfortunate, but the ultimate answer is unchanged -- find some other groups to participate in, and refrain from engaging this group owner that you cannot get along with.

Re: mail problems after transfer from Yahoo groups #post-transfer #yahoo

Thanks, Shal.

She didn't phrase that very well. In conversation with her, I was better able to understand what she was saying. Apparently, whenever she tried to send email from her Yahoo mail account -- NOT just to [email protected] -- she got that "unknown address" error.

That may not have been a kindness. That is, any content (files, photos, etc) she had uploaded to the Yahoo Group would have transferred over connected to her Yahoo Mail address; meaning that she would retain the ability to edit or delete them, as long as she logged in to Groups.io with the Yahoo Mail address
Her better move would have been to log in with the Yahoo Mail address, and in its Account page change its address to her new preferred address. I think that would change the ownership of her content to the new address.

Yes, that's what I wanted to do, but unfortunately, she had already subscribed with an alternate email, and then other stuff. Fortunately, I doubt that she will want to do that.

Interestingly, her ability to send email from her Yahoo mail addy returned as soon as I deleted her @yahoo subscription from our group. Bizarre.

We have other subscribers with yahoo email who have NOT experienced this problem, though.

If you are referring to the "Top Hashtags" display, I don't think there's any way to disable it. A "disable hashtags" group setting in the Message Policies section would be a good suggestion for beta.

Sounds like the behavior of a spam filter. She should check the webmail interface of her email service provider to see if more messages have been diverted to her Spam folder. If any are found there mark them as "Not Spam".

Are these footer-less messages replies to something she posted? It is possible that your group is set to reply to? Group and Sender or that some members are using Reply All in their email interface. In either of those cases the reply direct to her would be without footers.

Re: Bouncing problem #bouncedemails

If Groups.io rewrote all From addresses as if for DMARC, wouldn¡¯t that ensure the same and a more reliable experience for all users?

Ask Groups.io to implement an account feature whereby you can elect to
have your From address rewritten (as if for DMARC) despite the lack of a
published policy from your email service. This has been discussed before
and it would help others with a similar problem.

Re: #cal-notice #cal-notice

Duane,

I'm not sure what your question is, but I'll give some information that has helped me.

On each calendar event, at the bottom, there is a checkbox for "Send Notice To Group When Event Happens".? If you don't check that, no notice is sent.? Unfortunately, there's no way to disable notices, so if the person making the entry checks that box, a notice will be sent.? To avoid some of this, I've changed the hashtag #cal-notice to be moderated so that I can delete the message before it hits the group.? We don't normally use this tag since most of our events are many miles away and it would be too late to attend when it happens.?
I'm also moderating the #cal-invite and #cal-reminder tags for 'safety'.
----
thanks for answering. We do not use the event function at all. I use the #cal-notices device to send regular texts to the group which before ¨C in yahoo groups ¨C would be documents in the files with the option to be sent to the group in regular intervals. Goups.io does not have this functionality like yahoo.groups did.

?

So the only way to send these regular notices is to have them sent out of the calender function, and yes, they must appear in the messages. It?s just cumbersome to always have to delete these notices from the cover page.

#cal-notice #cal-notice

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Is there a way to prevent the automatic appearance of #cal-notice on the home page every time a cal notice was generated? I find it quite bothersome to have to check on the homepage regularly, then click and delete each notice individually. That the #cal-notice listing side does not refresh each time one of the notices is deleted but instead jumps to the messages side, makes it even more circumstantial.

I am afraid they wouldn't do that...and you are right this is a draconian measure.

Re: Group messages being blocked to @cox.net addresses

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

It most likely is a problem with cox.net. I¡¯m dealing with Cox right now over emails being delivered to me via Groups.io, that are arriving up to eight days later. A tech rep from Cox sees there is a problem, and they think it is on their end. They gave me work ticket number so I can check on their progress, but no answer back after two days.

Our group is a recent migration from Yahoo! Three members use Cox.net as their ISP. One of them is active in the group and reported two days ago that he was unable to receive the login verification email in 'real time', ie. within the timeout period. They are showing up about 24 hours later. He needs to set his password and to be able to log into the site and set his profile, etc. Note that he is getting the regular emails, Just not the item that is a Noreply type of email.

This leads me to think that the problem is on Cox.net's side and that they are holding the email for anti-spam verification or similar. He tells me that they are uncooperative and telling him its the forum server's issue.

In any event, does anyone know if? there is a work-around where I can set a password for him, so he can have full access?

Thanks,

Bart

Re: what to do about group owners and abuse

Marvin,

Is there an easy way to get help for abuse.

If the abuse were done on-list you could flag the messages. The More menu under each message has a Report This Message item. That opens up a dialog which would allow you to send the report to Groups.io support.

And this person is doing it via my private e-mail. Have blocked him. So, what else to do.

That being the case you've done what is most likely to be effective.

If he's sending the message using Groups.io's Private Reply or direct message facility then you could report that to [email protected]. But if (as is likely) he's sending them from his email service then you'd have to contact that service to report the messages as violations of their terms of service.

If there's no compelling reason to remain a member of that group you should leave it. You'll never win a pissing contest with the group owner.

Re: mail problems after transfer from Yahoo groups #post-transfer #yahoo

Su,

A member now writes to say that her Yahoo email account (with which she was subscribed to the old Yahoo group and which was brought over to the new one here) suddenly stopped working for her to send email. She writes:
Since the transfer, I get an error message from the Yahoo server saying that my mail
address cannot be found and has been rejected every time I try to send something.

If she's signed in to that Yahoo Mail account it can't be unable to find "my mail address". She must mean some other address - perhaps the group posting address, or one of her other email addresses.

?
But I did get the .io mails on my yahoo account. I just couldn¡¯t respond to them.
So maybe incoming mail isn¡¯t broken, just outgoing?

Ok, that's more along the lines I was thinking - it is the email address she's sending To that Yahoo is complaining about. The most likely thing is that she is misspelling the group's posting address.

I've sent a test message to her Yahoo email account to see if it does in fact receive incoming email.

You should already know the answer. That is, if her Yahoo Mail inbound were somehow disabled you should have promptly received a notice from your own email service telling you that delivery failed.

I've also asked the group owner to remove her yahoo email subscription since she has now subscribed with a different email addy.

That may not have been a kindness. That is, any content (files, photos, etc) she had uploaded to the Yahoo Group would have transferred over connected to her Yahoo Mail address; meaning that she would retain the ability to edit or delete them, as long as she logged in to Groups.io with the Yahoo Mail address.

Her better move would have been to log in with the Yahoo Mail address, and in its Account page change its address to her new preferred address. I think that would change the ownership of her content to the new address.
