groups.io owners standards and ethics

Marvin Hunkin

Hi. Was wondering, what standards, do group owners have to behave on groups.io. can they behave like anything at all. A owner of a group, has been ?very rude to me, using foul language ??and said he will kick my but and also been harassing me, and even bullying from time to time..

So, what’s the thinking by the group owners of groups.io, what standards, should owners, be to their members.

Any thoughts. Maybe have a document or set of standards for behaviour on groups.io.

Thanks.

Hi,

In short, they are members with special privileges. Note that this very definition can vary depending on who you ask.

Without getting into too much details, one way an owner might say odd things to members (or perceived as getting odd messages from owners) is policy reasons. A group owner may send private messages to members if policies are violated, or have a question about conduct and what not. This implies that, for the most part, owners operate under policies set forth either by themselves or by group as a whole. Ultimately, group owners, themselves members of the group, and in extension, users of Groups.IO themselves, are expected to follow service guidelines.

My advice is to Leave That Group - NOW and forever.? The owner/moderators set
the "tone" of the group.? Clearly that group is not suited to you.

Respect at all times for all, it has to be that way and it should be that way always. If not dump the group.? Good luck.

Marvin,

Was wondering, what standards, do group owners have to behave on . can they behave like anything at all.

A couple years ago there was a lengthy discussion on having a site-wide for Groups.io, but there were many concerns and nothing ever became of it. It was more focused on member behavior than moderator/owner behavior, if I recall correctly.

General rudeness doesn't rise to the level of being a Terms of Service violation, but see 1.6 in the User Conduct section, that would apply also to moderators/owners.

However I would suggest following Jim's advice to just leave the group if it is unsuited or hostile to you, rather than dwelling on trying to change the group owner's behavior. Group membership is two-way voluntary: you can always leave, and they can always ban you; either is fair game.

Apparently some people get moderated differently than others, even in this group.

I think you perhaps ought to elaborate, within the bounds of decency of course. I cannot see any obviously different "standards" being applied; the only obvious variable is the time lapse between sending a post and its being released to the Group, and that is (IMHO) a feature not a fault. The group I moderate can suffer from the same thing, so it's something that just has to be accepted.

Glenn,

Apparently some people get moderated differently than others, even in this group.

That's pretty much inevitable, given that the moderators are human.

Comments about the management of GMF I usually allow as on-topic if there's a general principle involved. That is, if the comment can be helpful to other group managers. If you have something to say about particular people or incidents please take it off list.

I will honor this request, I agree with the distinction.

A well run planned and operated group will have a set of terms and conditions over and above those of groups.io and an appeal path for issues.
Bear? in mind that while there may be a path to appeal through, the decision resulting from an appeal is often final and cannot be appealed.
In other words, as so many have said in different ways, group owners generally OWN their groups and their rules may? be absent, invisible or arbitrary but they own the group.
Leaving is the best solution.

Our group has quite stringent rules that are applied and followed.? By ALL of us.? But, we have also taken a Pollyanna approach, or more accurately the Thumper rule (from Bambi), “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.?

?

If I was being abused in anyway, and certainly by the owner, I’d be out of there in a heartbeat. ?Life’s too short.?

Hi. Well will explain. Got banned from a few groups, and the group owner did that, and then the co-owner or admin of another group banned me, and then he said not to contact him any more. So did not do that. That was two to three weeks ago. Then last night, he starts sending me vile rude, messages, and using the f word, the s word, and denigrating me. This is almost like stalking, bullying or abuse. Have contacted groups.io support. But don’t much faith, did bring this up a while and did report this owner of a few groups. But nothing came of it, the owner of groups.io, said to deal with it my self. So have blocked these couple of people.

Thanks.

It is unfortunate that the person responded to you this way, but if those messages were sent outside of Groups.io (from his email to yours) then there's nothing Groups.io would do about it, regardless of that person being a group owner. The TOS is only violated if the offending material goes through Groups.io.

So have blocked these couple of people.

That's the best answer. Let their angry or offensive words be their own burden, not yours.

Why are you still a member of the group.
I have left groups for less or a reason but if an?owner was rude?and said vile things to me I would be gone in a heartbeat. I am sure there are other groups that?are similar to that one that you can join. Ilene
