I'm creating a database for group members.? Is there a way to permanently hide the ID column?? Or to change its width?? Currently is is taking about two inches on the screen, and I need to continually hide anytime I open the database.? I'm looking to permanently hide or to change the width so that it only takes 2 characters of space on the screen.? Any help is appreciated!? Linda

Indeed. I knew that you would not be allowed to delete an account that was the sole Owner of a group...didn't know that the same rubric applied to downgrading your own group subscription.

So I learned something today.

Be advised that it is still possible to leave a group Owner-less via the Account Merge function (ref: ). That has been reported to support but I have not seen any corresponding bugfix announcement.

Open the Members List (Admin>Members). Find the subscriber and click anywhere on his/her row. You can change the person to a Moderator using the "Role" pull-down menu.

Now set the Moderator Permissions and Notifications the way you want. It doesn't make much sense, for example, to give someone the responsibility to Approve Pending Messages if the corresponding Notification is not also checked.

Finally, be sure to click the "Save" button at the bottom when you're done.

....which reminded me that I do, in fact, have another account on that
site which I'd forgotten about, but which has now allowed me to log on as
an owner, and re-instate my permissions.

So all now sorted -- thanks a lot to all who replied to my plea for help.

Part of the problem here is that many of the terms aren't totally clear as to what they mean. So, I did some testing.

For example: The "Bounce" option.

What this means is that if there is an attempt to create a new hashtag in a new topic generated via email, then the email is held and a new email (not a reply to the first one) is generated by groups/io and sent to the member that attempted to break the rules. You can still use existing hashtags, so the require hashtags groups still work.

Here is an example message that comes back with the group name and link number edited. Depending on your email client, and this not being a reply, it may be difficult to notice this email. I was off doing other things and it was only later that I noticed it had shown up in my Spam folder (Hotmail).

This group does not permit the creation of new hashtags except by the moderators. The subject of your message
contains at least one hashtag that is not allowed. Click on this link to edit your message subject and add appropriate tags:

/g/mygroup/editsubject/123456

Your message will not be sent to the group until you edit the subject.

There is a problem with this, as the link only works if the person sending the email is already logged into their groups.io account. Otherwise, one gets dumped at the homepage. I don't know what would happen if this was a restricted group.?Once you get logged in, then the link brings you to the editsubject form where you get a chance to correct your errors and then the message will be posted.

Personally, I would rather just see scrapping the "bounce" option altogether. IMHO, this is not ready for prime time.

Okay, that makes sense for existing groups, may not make sense for new groups. I now suspect Mark implemented this simply to provide the "strip" alternative.

I wonder what happens if "Hashtags Required" is ON, "Hashtag Permissions" is set to strip, and a Subscriber sends a message with a new hashtag? Does the message post sans the hashtag, does the message get bounced after all (i.e.: after stripping, it no longer contains a hashtag), does the hashtag get created anyway?

I just tried this in Shalstest...it let the post go through and created the new hashtag. But I'm a Moderator there so that's no doubt a factor (I didn't want to downgrade myself and be unable to change the Settings back the way they were).?

There's nothing "stupid" about that, I think most group owners / mods keep themselves unmoderated for convenience. It is just that I got a similarly nasty lesson all those years ago, except in my case it was a zombie computer spreading a virus rather than a malcontent or scammer.

simply 'hi' The spammer clearly doesn't have grammatical skills.

That's typical of the phishing messages I've seen. Either they are super informal and short (as if a friend), or they're trying to mimic a notice from a legit company. Some of the latter are annoyingly accurate - often a copy of an actual notice from that company, but with the links changed to point to the scammer's site.

Bounce was the prior behavior, so I'm sure that's default so as not to change a group's behavior unexpectedly.

Is the option to ban a Domain useful in certain cases like this? I see that banning a domain is possible with Premium IO accounts.

But perhaps a more effective method would be to have some way to block the actual spammer's IP address. Is that possible with Groups.io? Another group I belong to (non-Groups.io) has that capabiltiy and we have that way been able to effectively stop various spammers who had started posting nasty stuff.

There was also an IP look-up tool with that group which showed us if any other of our legitimate members had that same IP number (which was very unlikely) so that we wouldn't accidentally block them in the process of trying to ban the spammers.

Blocking an IP number has always seemed to me to be a very effective way of stopping this sort of abuse and I do not understand why it is not more in use as a tool for that. Incidentally, with that particular group only our Moderators can see the members' IP numbers.

If you have a second group Owner, (s)he should be able to reinstate your privileges. Otherwise you need to send a message to support[at]groups.io.

Please report back on how that goes.

First, make sure you're logged in with the email address used to create the group.? I don't think you can change an owner's role if doing so would result in no owners.??
If you can't resolve it, best to email support and Mark can fix you up.

I own a group with lots of pics.? It would be a good feature to be able to search the title field in the photos section to be able to find related pics.

All my group stuff does appear to be archived in Gmail as I can see all my messages there under 'everything' else once my inbox is clear. But definitely none of the nasties are there or in my sent folder at all.?

Agreed. I checked the group I moderate and found that it was set to "bounce" so moderators might be advised to check their own groups just to be certain that the setting is what they want it to be.
