Don't know how I did it (I was trying to add a new member directly, and somehow screwed up) -- how do I now re-instate myself to my previous status ?

Martin,
My first thought is that you may be logged in a on different email account and that you have multiple subscriptions to that group, the one you are currently logged in on is owner a normal member and the other account would be your owner account.
Next, if you actually did change your own membership, that means that there is still another user account that has Owner/Moderator status and you will have to ask that person to put your status back. In other words, the software wouldn't let you do this to yourself in the first place if you were the only Owner of the group.
