Re: Archive information

The "archives" is probably not what you think it is. It is simply a collection of group messages that have accumulated over the months/years.

As for managing them, outside of splitting/merging threads and other such daily maintenance, there isn't much you can do. You can download a backup in MBOX format (readable in any text editor). Open the Admin->Settings tab and click on the "download archives" button at top right.

Where can I find information on the archives and managing them?

Re: Archive information

A quick reply to say that "archives" can also mean "messages". It is confusing!?
The Help page says:
Archive
The archive of a group consists of all messages posted to the group, except messages that have been deleted. It is displayed in a chronological list by clicking on "Messages" on the group¡¯s home page.
?
There may be other archives if the term is used loosely - photos, files, databases, wiki.

Yes, they have. That is the whole reason for and origin of the "spam controls" in the group settings. When none of those controls were required (moderation, moderate new members, or restricted group), Mark was being spammed big-time. The controls were designed to cut down on that and I think have succeeded for the most part.

Unsubscribing is right.

We will have to agree to disagree. I know "the system with unsubscribing is designed" and it's a kluge. My group members are in a high educational bracket for the most part, although you may consider them "stupid" by virtue of the fact that many are naive users of software. I have never had the same group member spam-unsubscribed more than once. And I continue to maintain that direct-adding them back in with an informational message is no less effective than sending them the kludgy resubscribe link that groups.io already sends.?

You could do that now in Databases by naming the dbases in alphabetical or numerical order, but it won¡¯t be in a form format like you have.

This idea is also posted in the "beta" group but it was suggested to post it here too.? ?A member there suggested we offer a short list of categories to illustrate and solicit opinions on how to keep it short and still be inclusive.? ?So here is a quick pass I made with 20 entries, sorted alphabetically including one for "other."?

I don't think anyone has suggested that there should be any "no email" groups; I certainly haven't. The suggestion is that instead of being deleted from membership because of a spam marking individual members thus affected should be put on "no email" so that their membership is retained until they get things sorted out.

Not sure how you interpreted that as a recommendation that entire groups should be "no email".

Short answer:? No...not even a CAPTCHA.

Longer answer:? Search this group for "questionnaire" and you'll get lots of discussion on this. There is currently no new user questionnaire capability in the system, although it has been an oft-requested feature. Most people who feel they need that are kludging something into the Pending Subscription message...but you seem to be suggesting something even earlier in the subscription process.

? 2) Are there things that we - as Owners/Moderators - can do in

? ? ? members to permanent moderated status?
Each group must either be "restricted membership", "for moderator announcements only", "entirely moderated", or "new-user moderated." There is no provision to have someone join your group on their own volition and immediately start posting messages. If you have already set up a group of some kind, see Admin->Settings->Spam Control.?

? 3) I am concerned about this particular new member's request.
? ? ? It -seems- to indicate that the spammers have 'discovered'
? ? ? groups.io and are attempting to gain access.? Are others
? ? ? seeing any such activity?
Other than what I mentioned immediately above, it's pretty much your job as a group owner to keep spammers out of your group(s). From the discussions we've had here in GMF recently, the bigger problem most people are experiencing seems to be the exact opposite -- normal group discussions being flagged by overzealous spam filters. This could change as groups.io gets bigger and becomes more of a target.

? 4) Is it possible for a spammer/any one to request membership
? ? ? -without- having to process that request while being online?
? ? ? Can this be done with some kind of bot?? Can someone
? ? ? request membership in a group using only email?
It's entirely possible for a bot to request access to your group via a spoofed email address, but under normal circumstances they will not be allowed to post until their address is confirmed (they are sent a link in an email and someone has to click on it). Those with Premium groups can "direct-add" email addresses, which I believe bypasses these confirmation safeguards.

As in most things in life, one cannot have the power without also accepting the responsibility. If you're as concerned about spam control as you appear to be, I suggest your best choice would be to simply set up a moderated group.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: How to create a new database record

Milt -- If you don't want subscribers creating their own database tables, you could also choose "Subscribers can view, moderators can create tables" in your database Permissions.?Apparently, subscriber view access includes the ability to add rows to an existing table, something that is not at all intuitive (at least to me).

After 6-7 weeks here I'm still very much in learning mode.

Attachments in Calendar Events

Is there a way to include an attachment in a calendar event?

If he can't see the green button, go to Admin->Settings->Features->Database and be sure that "Permissions" is set to "Subscribers can view and create tables."

Re: #subgroups change to usual email address #subgroups

One word of warning, something I found when I tested it is that if the (last) sub-group is deleted, leaving only the main group, the [email protected] address will be deleted, leaving only [email protected].

Something I need to raise on beta, methinks.

Re: How to create a new database record

Perfect, Bruce.? Many thanks!? Using my moderator account, I was able to add a row and create a record for my new member.

I later went in and looked at the database through a rank-and-file member's account and found that the bright green "Add Row" button is absent, not viewable or clickable by a member who is not a moderator.? I conclude from that that there's no way at this point for a member to add a record to the database.? Am I correct on that?

If so, that might be something worthy of adding to the wish list.? If other groups use their databases as my group does, essentially to show members names and info, it would be helful to have the members themselves create the records.? Make sense, or am I missing something?

Thanks again for your great support!

Milt

How Safe (spam proof) is groups.io ???

emails to group instead of sender #issue

Southenders Admin

I am wondering if there is a way to make sure that members only reply to the sender, rather than the group, for an event. My members are getting ticked that even though my site is set up to 'reply to sender', they are all getting the members replies to events.?
Even though I have asked members to reply only to the email on events related to that event, all members are receiving the replies, as they are made out to the email of the site, rather than the individual who created the event.

I would love to be able to put what Shal has on his digest on every event email. But when I try to cut and paste it into the event in the calendar, it does not 'paste'.
Do not reply to this email. To reply to a message, click the Reply link under the message.

Re: HTML Question

This is an outlier, highly unlikely, but you might check that you don't have an anti-scripting tool in place that is tidying up for you. I can remember one case, a few years ago, when I scratched my head for some time over a similar problem and it turned out to be that an add-on to my own browser was interfering. Like I say, not likely, but it got me once. Bruce's points are more likely.

finding file "id number" assigned by groups.io

I got a notice from groups.io that someone had objection to the content of a particular file, but the file was identified only by a groups.io id#.? How do I find what file they are actually talking about?
