I overlooked the poll in the message, but it is very easy to go to the webpage for this group and still vote.? I just did it. /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/automatic_deletion_of_members/16655646 ? Barb ?

Fortunately, most of my group members have the good sense to send photos as attachments instead of embedded images, but a configuration option to convert one to the other would be a very nice thing to have. Re: #subgroups change to usual email address

Jeremy, if you've deleted all the subgroups, isn't it just going back to the original name ([email protected]) logical?? That is what the name was before you added subgroup(s).? Not sure why that would be a problem?

I believe what Al's looking for is something to supplement the Public group directory search engine...sort of like the categories you see on the front page of Craigslist.

Re: Message Formatting
I've often asked myself this same question. As you mentioned, there are three settings in the group management area:
- Force HTML emails - Normalize HTML emails - Plain text only Oddly enough, it is possible to check any combination of these three boxes and save without an error. If that is done, I don't know which setting[s] take precedence. It would take a minimum of seven different trials to find out. Then in the subscriber settings, we have the following: - Individual emails - Full-featured digest - Plain digest - Daily Summary And there's one final option not here but relevant...viewing the messages on the web with no email delivery at all...for a total of five. Some of these will contain hyperlinks, some not.? Then, as you noted, we have the scenarios where the original message may or may not contain a lot of colors, links, etc...or just plain text. To test all these combinations would take 7 x 5 x 2 = 70 different trials, minimum. I don't know anybody who has done this. Other settings in your group will change the footer content and what hyperlinks appear therein.?A further complication -- as if we needed one -- is that many email clients can be configured to strip out HTML, even if the original message contains it. It might be nice to have a "sister group" to GMF where we can try out some of these features and address these questions once and for all (I suspect Mark already has one set up). But even if we did, the answer would no doubt be complicated and unlikely to truly satisfy to your group members.? I hope this helps, but it probably doesn't. Bruce |
Re: Automatic Deletion of Members If Message Marked As Spam

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýNo, you do not have to necessarily mark messages as spam to have them go into a spam folder.? It can be unintentional.? Some of my legitimate messages have gone into the spam folder, which I have not "marked" and didn't know they were in there until I checked it days later.? And the messages might accidentally get deleted if someone is doing a mass delete of their spam folder.? So unsubscribing isn't always right. I wonder if this could be made a choice by the owner somehow.? It seems like it's pretty divided on how people would like it handled. Barb ?

Re: Archive information
The "archives" is probably not what you think it is. It is simply a collection of group messages that have accumulated over the months/years.

As for managing them, outside of splitting/merging threads and other such daily maintenance, there isn't much you can do. You can download a backup in MBOX format (readable in any text editor). Open the Admin->Settings tab and click on the "download archives" button at top right. Bruce -- Sent from my humble desktop computer ----- Original Message -----

Re: Archive information
A quick reply to say that "archives" can also mean "messages". It is confusing!?
The Help page says: Archive
The archive of a group consists of all messages posted to the group, except messages that have been deleted. It is displayed in a chronological list by clicking on "Messages" on the group¡¯s home page.
?
There may be other archives if the term is used loosely - photos, files, databases, wiki.Frances |

I have never had the same group member spam-unsubscribed more than once. And I continue to maintain that direct-adding them back in with an informational message is no less effective than sending them the kludgy resubscribe link that groups.io already sends.? |

From the discussions we've had here in GMF recently, the bigger problem most people are experiencing seems to be the exact opposite -- normal group discussions being flagged by overzealous spam filters. This could change as groups.io gets bigger and becomes more of a target. ? 4) Is it possible for a spammer/any one to request membershipIt's entirely possible for a bot to request access to your group via a spoofed email address, but under normal circumstances they will not be allowed to post until their address is confirmed (they are sent a link in an email and someone has to click on it). Those with Premium groups can "direct-add" email addresses, which I believe bypasses these confirmation safeguards. As in most things in life, one cannot have the power without also accepting the responsibility. If you're as concerned about spam control as you appear to be, I suggest your best choice would be to simply set up a moderated group. Hope this helps, Bruce |
Re: How to create a new database record
Milt -- If you don't want subscribers creating their own database tables, you could also choose "Subscribers can view, moderators can create tables" in your database Permissions.?Apparently, subscriber view access includes the ability to add rows to an existing table, something that is not at all intuitive (at least to me).
After 6-7 weeks here I'm still very much in learning mode. Bruce |
