Change/customize automatic calendar hashtag #hashtags #calendar

Is there a way to change the hashtag which the calendar appends automatically to each event?
I don't mean to use the same hashtags I set for the group posting, I'd like to have a separate hashtag #reminder just for the calendar.

I edited the original hashtag "cal-invite" to "reminder" after the event was displayed in the group, but I found out that the new hashtag did not work for subsequent events.
Two later events were marked with two different hashtags: #cal-reminder and #cal-notice.

Sorry for the dumb question, but I don't understand how it works.

Thank you for your help.

using any old key word, all the search results display exactly the same as
you've described:? About 1 1/2 lines are displayed from each group's main

Thank you, Patty. I didn't realize that the Search results was meant to display only a fixed characters description. Maybe because the text was abruptly truncated without any indication I thought it was a bug.

Re: Transfer Group from Yahoo

Al,

We, the co-owners, have elected to eliminate from the new
list at groups.io the ¡°No Email¡± mail delivery option.
This is one of the oldest tug-of-wars I recall from the Yahoo Group mod groups - some moderators being outraged that members would choose No Email, and some members being outraged that a group moderator would dare to change their setting.

My personal philosophy is to leave those members to their own devices. They chose that setting and thereby chose the responsibility to check the group web pages (Conversations) periodically. Or not. Their problem, not mine. And the truth is that members who really don't want even Special Notices can always put a filter in their email service. So overriding their choice may be a Pyrrhic victory.

As a footnote to that, in recent years No Email was a recommended work-around for the frequent failures of the Unsubscribe mechanism. It was the best some members could do when they were done with the group. These members may account for a fair fraction of those that immediately unsubscribe from the Groups.io group after the transfer. The "You were added" message from the transfer agent, and the "Welcome" notice from the group moderators may be the first these members have heard from the group in years.

4) If the above item #3 takes place then I expect to see some of those
that were converted from ¡°No Email¡± to ¡°Special Notice¡± bouncing.
Whether or not that is true, probably. Those two other messages I mentioned are sent to all copied member addresses:

One is from Groups.io with the subject line "You have been added to GroupEmailAddress" - that one tells them the posting email address and the home page web address for the group, and provides an unsubscribe link. This is sent if you do not uncheck the box on the transfer form.

The other is the active Welcome notice, from the group's Member Notices page. The group owners/mods author that message.

5) If the above item #3 does not take place then I expect to see some
of those ¡°Special Notice¡± subscribers bouncing after I send a ¡°Special
Notice¡± to the entire membership announcing that the transfer from
Yahoo Groups to Groups.io is complete and that the Yahoo Group
activity has been terminated.
You don't have to make a Special Notice of this. You can create a Welcome notice that is tailored specifically to carry the information you wish to convey to the copied members, and make it "Active". It will go out to them when the copy completes. Then afterward make your normal Welcome notice active.

Unlike a Special Notice, Member Notices are sent regardless of the members email delivery choice. So this would reach them even if you didn't disable No Email.

I also saw about a 20% of the membership bouncing and almost all of
them had previously been subscribers having the ¡°No Email¡± deliver
status.
Probably more of the members who couldn't unsubscribe due to Yahoo glitches.

Re: Editing the homepage of a Group

Loopy,

I know how to change the picture on the home page
but that's basically all.
That, plus the content of the Group Description section are the only parts of the home page over which you have direct control. Everything else is automatically generated.

In Settings, the Description is in the top section, General. Edit the content there and then scroll to the bottom to click the blue Update Group button.

Also in Settings, the Cover Photo has a tab of its own, click its button in the row of buttons at the top of the Settings page.

Re: Transfer Group from Yahoo

Bruce, Judy,

You can also plan to have a number of members start to bounce emails
after the transfer completes, due either to dead email addresses among
your Yahoo records or recipient mail servers that for some reason
think mail coming from groups.io as spam.
If a message bounces it is not delivered - not even to spam. Or you could say it the other way: a message that was delivered to spam (or trash or anywhere) did not bounce - it was accepted.

But Bruce's point remains: some email services may outright reject messages from Groups.io because that service believes Groups.io to have a bad reputation, and not because the address is actually "no such user" or other error. And other members may use services (or settings within their service) which attempt to filter out spam by doing a "human test" - they hold your message and send you back some instructions to prove you're a human. These services won't work with Groups.io unless the member does something to allow group messages to be delivered.

Re: Muting hashtags or topics in the group page message display

Shal,

Yes, a filter option would be suitable. I just tried a negated term in the Search box (to exclude the listing of posts containing that term) but that does not work. Check boxes for hashtags would be even better.

No, unfortunately. This was much discussed in beta back when the muting and following was first implemented, but nothing ever got done about it.
Right now the only place someone reading on the web can see the results of message selection is in the Groups.io home page (click on the logo in the upper left) where the left column offers pages to see lists of only Muted or Followed Topics, or Muted or Followed Hastags - however these lists show those results as a merger of messages from all your group subscriptions.
My current suggestion for this lack is to add checkboxes to the filter tool (small button to the right of the Search button) that would limit the list display to exclude muted topics or hashtags, or to include only the muted topics or hashtags. Likewise for followed and not followed.

Re: Receive messages twice

Victoria,

All the messages sent to the group appear twice. What can I do?
Do you mean they appear twice in your email inbox? Or appear twice in the group's Messages section?

And do you mean all messages, including those posted by other members? Or do you mean all of your own message posts?

If you mean your Inbox, and you mean your own messages, then have a look at the very bottom of a pair of them. Does one have the group footer and the other not?

If that's the case then the one without the group footer is a copy of the message you sent, while the one with the group footer is the copy sent back to you as a member of the group. Depending on your email interface that may be normal behavior.

It seems that if you mute a topic or hashtag so as not to receive emails on that topic you would also want to suppress its display when you access the group's web page message listing.

Also, some of our subscribers who only read the group on the webpage would like to have the ability to mute certain hashtags/topics from being displayed, just as our email subscribers can do.

Actually, I forgot. You *can* mute a hashtag from the list, too. Go into Hashtags --->Muted and click on the plus sign where it says "mute a new hashtag."

Re: Dumb Question of day -- How do I direct people to join my new group?

Arno,

In our 'get together' group there is one member who only sends one on
one eMail He never did join the Yahoo group befote.

Is there a way to add him on so that messages to him do not have to be
CC'ed any longer?
I'd try J's suggestion 1 first - send him an invite.

He may have been daunted by Yahoo Groups' rigamarole for joining, especially if he tried to get a Yahoo Account so as to access the group's web resources. With Groups.io this is so much more streamlined that he might succeed. You could mention in the invitation text just how easy it is. Including simply replying to the invitation if all he wants is to read and post by email.

Or as Bruce and J said, you can upgrade your group to Premium in order to do a Direct Add of his address. Fortunately you don't have to make more than a one month commitment if you decide to go this route. Click on your Group's Upgrade page, then on the "View/Change Plan" button over to the right.

In the list of plans there is "Group Transfer (Premium For One Month)". That option is there to support transfers from lists on platforms other than Yahoo Groups or Google Groups, which have no automatic transfer support. But I've found that is also very handy and cost-saving for groups like PTA groups who tend to collect the majority of their members at a single yearly event (school registration).

But I think it can also work out well for groups in the aftermath of a transfer from Yahoo, who have a bunch of addresses that didn't get copied, or due to renewed outreach have collected a bunch of addresses from people who are just now taking an interest in the group.

Re: Groups.io site updates - transfer progress for prior requests?

Harlan,

Is this 'track the progress of transfers' available ONLY to new
transfers
I don't know, but I suspect "yes".

... or in my case--I requested the transfer of my group on the
20th--can I check the progress of my transfer? If so, where do I go
to CHECK the progress.
If you click on the "Easy Group Transfer" link at the bottom of any page, then click on Yahoo Group Instructions that should bring up the new instructions.

Scroll to the very bottom and on the left is a green button to Start New Transfer. On the right is an "In Process" box with a drop-list of your "in process" groups. Select one of those to see its status.

The thing is, this form and that In Process list are tied to your current log in at Groups.io. Whereas the old process, up to the moment you sent in the "Go" email was not. So the question is whether Mark was able to take all those outstanding Go requests and add them to this mechanism.

I don't know, but if you have a look perhaps you'll be able to give us an answer, at least for your case.

FWIW, the status isn't particularly exciting. If you haven't clicked Go it says so, and offers the opportunity to update your request as well as the Go button. If you have clicked "Go" it says that you have, and your request options are disabled (can no longer be updated). It does not show the one thing I'd like to see - either an ETA or a raw count of groups ahead of me in line.
