[Update] Active member disappeared from records and was placed as a Pending Member

First, thank you all for trying to help. I truly do appreciate you all. You make life much easier for the rest of us!!

After continuing to search for details on this, I found in the main Activity History where she had changed her email address within the group. Still nothing on her being removed from the group.

However, another oddity, the new email address she created four days ago receives no mail from the group. All of her settings are correct and nothing is being delivered to her spam folder. So, something strange has definitely happened. I guess it's just "gremlins in the system."

I've deleted the extra email address, and I'm considering this issue dealt with. Thank you for your time!

Subject: [GMF] Active member disappeared from records and was placed as a Pending Member

??? I received an email from a member stating that their mail wouldn't go through to the group. I checked through my mail from that group and saw a Subscription Approval Needed notification for that person. I thought that odd since that person has been active in our group since December 26th. I went to the GIO site and found the same thing. There is no record in my email, nor on the site, that she left the group or was removed from the group...only the Subscription Approval Needed notification in my email, her name listed in the Members Pending Approval section, and her attempts to send mail to the group in the Activity History section. It's as if she didn't exist until today.

??? After further investigation, I found out that she was attempting to change her email address. I couldn't get any more information, such as how she attempted to do it, etc. But, what I don't understand is how she got removed with no record whatsoever of her actions. She's still using the same email address, so there should be some sort of a record. At the very least, there should have been an email notification. But, there's nothing.

??? This has never happened to me before. What can I do to make sure it never happens again?

Thanks For Your Time,
Linda

Yes, Mark reads all the messages on beta and takes appropriate action.

I was given a solution which is easy to implement.
That is to delete the image not only?at the bottom where I?had done it but also in the top portion of the email itself. So if I delete it in 2 places, it will not show up in the email. I am going to try that.

Now if I write to Beta and make a suggestion for a possible bug, would it be listened to if I don't have a premium?group.?

Checking the box deleted only the image file containing the image, not
the text in the body of the message which referenced it.

If there's a bug here it may be this: that the on-site view doesn't show
a broken image icon at the spot where the image file was referenced. If
it did you'd have known you needed to take the second step of deleting
the reference.
?
The more complicated fix (for Mark) would be to find and eliminate the
references when images are deleted from a pending message.
?

Standard missing/broken image icon plus the name of the image file.
That's what most HTML rendering applications would show when there's a
reference to a file that can't be found or read.

Tough call. I'd say it isn't a bug, exactly, but a lack of a smooth user
interface.
?
As a #suggestion in beta I'd say the suggestion would be: When editing a
Pending message, delete any HTML <img> tags referencing a file when the
checkbox is used to delete that file.

Thanks for that information.
That is what I didn't do. I will do that in the future.
I need to remember to remove the image from both places.
I am sure I will be able to test that out soon LOL

I did some testing on editing messages with attachments (in the body or
at the end of the message) some time ago for a GMF image attachment
thread so this is relatively fresh and there is definitely a bug there.
?
Unless it gets fixed, when you edit a message which has inline embedded
images in the body, check the graphic you want to delete in the
"attachments"as you already do now, but before clicking on Save Message,
scroll through the message textbox above and find that same image that's
displayed up there, select it, and Del it. If you don't delete the image
in both places, and only do one in either direction*, you'll experience
things like yours.
?
Cheers,
Christos
?
* It's funkier the other direction, i.e. delete the textbox inline image
but leave the attachment and save; the image doesn't show anymore in
message display but if the message is re-edited the "deleted" image
reappears in the "attachments" section ... you can funky it even more by
deleting different images in the body vs the "attachments" section, and
you can end up in a message which displays different images on the
message body textbox vs the "attachments" section when edited again ...
I'll have to look back at notes to get the exact details and I'll post
another message in order to keep this one fixing-your-problem only, but
in a nutshell, the same underlying code is used for handling editing of
both messages with traditional body-end attachments and inline
message-body images, and it "shoehorns" message-body images in being
handled the same as message-end images in both code and db storage and
things are not staying synchronized between the "attachments" and
message body section in the message editing screen.

Because that would defeat the purpose. The whole point of introducing the thumbs-up button is that it reduces the need for additional messages.

IMHO - "Likes" are for social media contests to see who can get the most "Likes".?
On groups.io, you thumb up posts, not users. It's not a contest (unless you make it one)

Yes; you can have a group listed in the directory but still have its archives private (only members can see them, not the public), and allow non-members to post; it's a kind of a "honey-pot" setup, you make your address known so people can find you, anyone can send you anything, but only you can see it after being received. (plus obviously the non-member who sent it through the copy in their Sent Items folder).

Christos

Need to create a group to collect public opinion

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

NY State has had an executive order that all communities with a police force establish a committee of its citizens to review and re-imagine its policing.? I am on the committee for the Town of Ulster in the Kingston, NY area.
We have made our review and are about to present it to the public and solicit public opinion.? I have run a couple of groups since Yahoo Groups folded and naturally thought of groups.io...

But, having begun to create a groups.io group, I realized we don't really want a discussion group (which could turn into a combative free for all on the charged issue of policing), rather we want a "bucket" to collect opinion, a private group:
  • listed in the directory
  • that would allow non-members to post (I realize that the posts would necessarily be moderated)
  • whose postings would be then be visible to the people on the committee...who would be its members
  • but the postings would not be visible to the public

Yes, this is a poll...but:

  • of the simplest kind (what do you think/feel)
  • I want this to be a free group, which no longer supports polls

The reason I'm thinking of making this a private group is that if the group and its postings were to be seen (as well as being posted to) publicly it could turn into a battleground and a headache to moderate and present in a civil productive fashion.

So my question: can private group allow postings by non-members?

Have you searched your group's Activity log to see if there any clues there? Don't just search for failed attempts at posting.

By notification, I mean an email sent to me. Sorry if I confused the issue.

I receive an email every time someone leaves the group. And, my junk folder alerts me every time something is in it. Do you see why I'm so puzzled? LOL

Linda -- Click on Subscription on the left-side menu bar and update your Moderator Notifications as needed. If the "Members" entry shows that an email notification is already set up, check your spam/junk folder to see if it landed there.

Please note that only?subscription?changes in your group can be set up to send you a notification. If -- as Duane suggested -- this member deleted his account or changed his email address, these are account functions, and notifications are not sent.

Changing an email address will create an entry in the activity log, though.

Not correct.

The Likes info (i.e. to which message they pertain to and who liked it) are saved in GIO's message-attributes database table(s), otherwise the next time you opened that message which you (or someone else) liked it, in the interface, the Likes wouldn't have "stuck".? You can click on the "x person liked this" link on any message and it shows you who liked it.

it's just that while the info is being (and has been) stored, nothing is being done with it, so far anyway.

Cheers,
Christos

No and no.? Each email address listed as a member is a separate account.? You only need to do something about the red B's if they annoy you.? There are a couple on this group from 2015! ;>)

bouncing members #bouncingemails

As an owner of several groups, I have never really paid any attention to the bouncing status of members unless they contact me to say they are not getting group messages, and then I investigate. In looking today at the list of bounced members, especially with the red B, I noticed that some had Yahoo accounts that were no longer valid and they had another account with a different email address. If I delete their account listed with the old Yahoo address, will that affect their new account with the new address?
