Question about Direct Add message

Chuck Palmer

Is there a way to turn this off?? If I Direct Add people, they get both that message and the Welcome Message.? Our Welcome Message is sufficient.

You can't be sure of that.? They may have used the group features, but only use email for messages.? One of the better selling points of GIO, in my opinion, is that there's no tracking.? Dumping the log and parsing is about as close as you can get.

When responding to questions on some of my groups (as well as this one), I often include a link to a file, photo, wiki page, etc., so anyone that's interested is using the site, even if I don't know it.

BTW, for something to be considered as a suggestion for the site, you'd need to post it on the .? This is an unofficial user-to-user group.

Report of who uses GIO via web

Chuck Palmer

Not sure if this falls under the #featurerequest or #suggestion category so I tagged it as both.? It may even already be somewhere I missed in the documentation but I searched around and could not find it so here goes...

One of the many reasons we migrated from GG to GIO is its loverly web interface.? Our previous GG folks only used that system via emails to the group so we're trying to get them to use GIO for things like its polls, calendar, searching, etc. but it's an uphill battle -- lots of Luddites.? To that end, I'd like to be able to get a listing of those members who have never accessed the group via the web.?

As I browse thru members' Activity History and the main Activity Log, I see some with messages sent via web but there is a significant # who have ONLY sent messages via email and never logged into the web interface for its additional features.

Is there some way to generate a listing of those members?? I was thinking of dumping the whole Activity Log then parsing it via Excel but wanted to check to see if I'm missing something obvious first.

Thanks!

Re: How to make edits without emailing everyone in the group #messages

Should be noted, though, that the author of the edited message will still get a notification that the message has been altered. So the general membership won't be sent an updated copy, but the author will get a notification.

No - the filter simply says do not send ANY emails with the designated characteristics to the spam folder.

Hi Bruce! Thanks for your response - my findings interspersed below.

I'd leave it blank. Unless your group is very large it seems unlikely that multiple people have changed email addresses. So it shouldn't be that difficult to find among the search hits.

Leaving it blank yields no results, meaning that no one has changed their email address since the group moved to Groups.Io, I assume.

and does it have to be the entire email address, or is the first part good enough?
If you do need to enter something to further filter the hits, I suggest using the full address. My own experience with substring searches has been somewhat hit-or-miss.

I tried it with the full address, and now at least it is showing up, whereas before it was not showing up for any search! Strange, but oh well.

I am now wondering this person maybe changed their email address before the transition to Groups.Io, and that may be why it not showing up.
The person may also have -- instead of changing their email -- merged two email addresses/accounts. Pretty sure on this end that such a merge does not appear in the activity log.

So, I am not sure what merging addresses means, but I am at the point of thinking this mystery may never be solved. It is not a huge group, and at some point, I will just check my list against the member list online and maybe something will turn up that way. Thanks so much for your very helpful suggestions and thoughts!

Patti

Re: Recent change to screen for approving posts of new members

Thanks for getting back to me.?

Phone? To browse the internet - shudder!? Nah it's a real computer with a large screen and I'm pretty certain that I was running the browser almost full screen.

If I hit this again, I'll update - otherwise safe to assume the browser window was too small.

Thanks again, David

Re: My new group makes asks to to approve my own messages

Thank you, Frances and Duane.

I now know how to fix *and* have decided to keep on moderation for the reasons you gave. What I good idea!? After being an admin on different groups on different platforms for over a decade, I wish I'd had/thought of this option before.

Best wishes,

Hi Andy! I had not but just tried now, and still nothing shows up. When using that action, do I still put the email address in the search box? and does it have to be the entire email address, or is the first part good enough?

I am now wondering this person maybe changed their email address before the transition to Groups.Io, and that may be why it not showing up. Of course, I cannot go and check the Yahoo group, so I guess it may remain a mystery!

Thanks,

Patti

Have you tried search the activity log for the action 'Changed email'?? That will show you the old and new addresses when someone changes their address so you may be able to trace back from there.

searching for members question

Hello. Today I received a notification that a member left my group. I maintain a separate list of members in a word document and was not able to locate that person in my list. So, I went into the group and looked at activity, and yes, there was a listing for that email address leaving the group. But, when I searched on that email address under activity, nothing shows up, not even the leaving of the group.

What I suspect is that the person somewhere along the line changed their email and I was not aware of it, but I am flummoxed that nothing is showing up in a search of activity. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks!

Patti

Edgar -- Owners (and Moderators with the "Edit Archives" permission) can do this by clicking the "Save Without Sending to Group" button when they complete the edit. This button is not present for regular Members.

I suspect that you're just not seeing the new file info.? When you import a file, it doesn't update any existing records, it appends the file to the existing records, so they'd all be at the bottom.? What you'll probably want to do is delete all records, then import your file.? Make sure you have all the records in the new file before deleting them in the database!
