Re: changing profile
Sugar, Ok, I am stuck again Please go through my list of steps one by one and tell us what you see and what you click/type. Start with / Is there a list of group names there? If so, is the group you're talking about in that list? If so, are there any badges like "Owner" or "Mod" after the group name? If so, what are they? Shal |

Re: Hi, new to groups.io, need assistance please
Cara,
I have been reading the updates since they began and saw you can sendIf you are inviting people to an event then that should be all you need to do. When editing the event, in the Notifications section at the bottom, checking "Send Invite To Group" causes a message to be posted in your group immediately when you click the Add Event button. What showed up was a button, outlined in grey, within it was a blueCorrect. That ICS file is a standard format, members with a compatible personal calendar should be able to import that file to add your event to their calendar. As the owner of the group I tried in my personal email to open it, andInteresting. Do you have a personal calendar as part of your AOL subscription? If not that could be the problem. Or maybe AOL's calendar doesn't support ICS files. I don't use AOL so I don't know how to advise you. I believe that other email interfaces, such as Yahoo Mail, Gmail, or even the Thunderbird email client would offer to add the ICS file to your personal calendar. If you use a calendar that isn't integrated with your email interface you ought to be able to save that ICS file, and then import it in your calendar. Not as simple as just clicking on it, but possibly easier and less error-prone than manually copying the info into your calendar. Shal |

Good point about the mobile web browser. But what we have going on is several people that don't ever check their emails but text constantly all day long. So never respond to email and miss notifications. As you can probably guess, this is the younger members of our group. Michael,
So the quick answer to this is that it works. If you add someone as aExcellent! However, you cannot reply via text, it gets rejected by Groups.io. IThe key is the "From" address. It must match the subscribed address or else the reply will be rejected as "not a member" (unless your group allows non-members to post). If that's what happened you should see a "Non-member" entry in the group's Message Activity log for the attempt. If you find that entry make note of the exact email address reported. You can (when logged in under the subscribed address) add that sending address as an Email Alias on the Subscribed address' Account page, Login section. It is under the "Advanced Settings" expander at the bottom. If the email gateway always sends replies with that same address then those should post as if posted under the subscribed address. You can, however, click on the "View/Reply Online" link and reply in aIf your device has a mobile web browser it may be fair to ask why you're bothering with SMS rather than just using an email service. But to each his own. ;-) Shal |

So the quick answer to this is that it works. If you add someone as a user through the normal process but use phonenumber@carrier then they will receive text messages when a post is made. However, you cannot reply via text, it gets rejected by Groups.io. I assume because it's missing all the email headers. Re: SMS / Phone Text
Michael,
Do you know if using email to text would work? ieI don't know. It has been ages (when I owned a basic flip-phone) since I've tried using a carrier's SMS gateway with an email list (a Yahoo Group). I seem to recall that I made it work, sort-of, but it wasn't very useful. Something like the 160 character limit was all consumed by the email address and other stuff, leaving no room for the message text itself. In Groups.io the first challenge would be getting the gateway address confirmed - you'd have to be able to reply to the confirmation message and I think that was a sticking point. Or, if you have a premium group you could avoid that problem by using Direct Add. If you run the experiment and get a useful result that would be a nice how-to article to post here, and/or in GMF's Wiki. Shal |

Mike,
Is there now or is there a future plan to include the ability to sendIt has been discussed, but I don't think there's a plan. One issue is that there's a cost for sending them, so it would have to be a paid group, or paid memberships, or something (see Mark's reply in the second message of that topic). That topic is now locked, so you'd have to start a new one to bring it up again. Shal |

Pedja,
I am new to this. I just created my first group and set it to biIt sounds like you have the address wrong, and/or are not logged in to Groups.io. Try going here: / If that page shows you a list of your group memberships then click on the group you wish to visit. If that page shows you general information about Groups.io then you are not logged in. When you log in, be sure to use the same email address that you used when you created your group. Then go back to that page. Actually, after I created group it seemed normal, but then I decidedCreating a subgroup does change the address (both web and email) for your group, but the old address should still work - it should automatically redirect you to the new address. And in any case, the group should be in your group list (at the link above). Shal |
Re: Additional member attribute(s)

John Mc,
Has there been any thought/discussion to add one (or more) fields toThere is one "extra" field. If you open a member's page there's the "Notes" tab. Alas, that feature is rather out-of-sight-out-of-mind right now, there's no indication given in the list that it holds content, and there are no notifications when a moderator updates that field. At least the update does get logged in the Moderator Activity log. Not trying to turn the member list into a full-out database - but forI've often wished for functionality like this, but I've never come up with a proposed "best" way to do it. Just adding more fields to the Members list is one approach. But it can make that list cluttered, which could ultimately be an impediment to its primary use cases. Maybe there would be a clever way to manage what is shown when there are too many columns to fit the user's window; a bit like Excel's split and/or freeze features. I've also thought of having it be another selector, "Notes", in the Members list view button that currently selects Members, Moderators, Pending, Bouncing, or Banned. When "Notes" is selected then the custom fields are shown rather than the standard fields. But I think you'd have to have at least the email field automatically included, or both email and Display name. So you rapidly run into the same width problem as having them in the primary members list. A pro or con of those ideas (depending on your use case) is that it would be available only to moderators. Possibly one could do a similar thing built on the member Directory so that it could be made available to members if desired. In my classmate groups it would be desirable to allow members to add their current address, phone number, nick-name in school, activities, or other information to help everyone remember them. Even a second "then" picture to go with their current profile photo/avatar. Couldn't find anything searching old topics - is this wish listI'd say yes. We could kick it around here some more if you like, or just go for it in beta. Shal |

I have to confess I and my members also miss the comments feature. I get off list messages, mags please enable comments for photos, so I respond with, sorry it simply isn't in my power to do that, sigh, despite all the moans we had about Yahoo groups, it did spoil us.

Re: How do you get members to join your group?
#promotion
maggie cooper
I started a Yahoo group in 2004, did a short 'about' write up outlining what was offered, would be subscribers had to send a brief message saying why they wanted to join. Within a week I had a dozen members, growth was slow, but gradually as word spread within the area my group covered, the dozen became 2500. In 2004 my area of interest existed in a small niche software market, machine embroidery software, I made videos showing how a small selection of the programs worked and how to use them. As a listed group I attracted 'freeby hunters', and group collectors, one boasted she belonged to over 100 groups, so in 2007 I altered the group to be an unlisted one, sent mails at weekly intervals stating I would remove all 'special' notices members, ( treat all members as vips so 'special Notices' members never got information) permanent bouncers, anyone that didn't respond with I want to continue my membership by a given date. They had 2 months to decide. I culled the membership to 700, was unlisted, put all members on permanent moderation, appointed 2 moderators, and made membership by invitation only.?
I made the move to Groups.io Dec 31st, informed my members, asked them to let me know if they wanted to be part of the move, they have until Feb 28th to make up their minds, on March 1st I will simply delete the old group. After I unlisted my Yahoo group all new member requests came via existing member requests. I intend to stick with the same procedure here in Groups.io, I neither desire or want members that are not interested in learning how to improve their skill set, offer support and encouragement to fellow old and new members. If what you offer via your group proves to be of value, word of mouth becomes a great marketing tool, but be warned as word of mouth can also destroy a group if members feel a group doesn't fulfil its members needs. So far my new group here has 124 members, it will grow slowly but that's what I want, I have no desire to own the biggest group there is, I want my members to enjoy their membership experience.? |
