I'm thinking of using this for one of my groups to let a podcast I run post as long as i have special tags in said podcast. Yeah I can see where this might come in handy. Let someone try out the list let's say, or if they wanted to guest post an article to the list with the hash #news or what ever. Interesting.

Thanks for this. Question two. Would list members still be able to reply to the message on the list, lets say if they wanted to say something like "man that article was interesting" or "that sucked." or will their messages bounce. I'm thinking they would still be able to reply and give feedback or an opinion etc. Thanks all and happy Friday On Nov 17, 2017, at 1:00 AM, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: |

Re: receive only email addresses under email integrations. what is a good use case for this?
Sarah,
Hello to all. Still getting used to groups.io.Welcome aboard! What is a good use for the email receive only addresses you canIt is one way to let non-members post to your group. You have the choice of whether posts via the integration are Moderated or not, and you can specify a hashtag which is always added to such posts. You might do this to allow a "special guest" to post a message, without requiring that the guest join the group. The guest may not want to be bothered with regular group messages, or you may not want the guest to have member-level access to the group's content. Another possibility would be to allow automatic email notices (from other services) to be posted to the group. Another way to allow non-member posting would be to check the "Allow Non Subscribers to Post" box in the Message Policies section of your group's Settings page. This is in its way more straightforward, but doesn't offer the option of not moderating the posts, nor of automatically adding a hashtag to them. It also runs a somewhat greater risk of spammers posting to it, because the group's posting address is advertised on the group's Home page, as well as being in many members' address books. Despite that risk this is the method I've preferred to use, and I haven't (knock on wood) had a problem with spammers filling up my pending queue. I see you can do hash tags. What can this be used for etc etc etc?Hashtags have a multitude of uses in Groups.io. The most basic is the common function: to categorize message threads (Topics). On the Hashtags page in a group you can click on a hashtag to get a list of all the topics tagged with that hashtag. Members of your list can decide to mute (stop receiving by email) topics containing a given hashtag, or to follow (receive by email) only chosen topics, which can be selected by hashtag as well as individually. Hastags can also be used to modify settings for a particular thread (Topic). Click on the Hashtags page of your group, then click Create Hashtag. On the page that opens you'll see many options that can give your hashtags special capabilities. You can cancel without actually creating a hashtag once you've reviewed the options. Transferring Member Lists
If the initial Groups.io message is sent to their "preferred" email address as designated on the Yahoo group, there shouldn't be a problem with most of them being able to complete the Groups.io login process. For those few who might not be able to do that, will there be a problem with my issuing a new invitation to join after the group list is transferred? Could I then delete their old membership from the transferred list? I understand that it would mean they can't edit old postings, but that shouldn't be an issue with our group. A limited few do all the postings; the majority just read the emailed messages and login occasionally to view new photos.I don¡¯t know exactly what Groups.io did when it transferred my list of 3,000 subscribers and 15 years worth of messages on a very active list. It was seamless. The message sent to members was so clear, I received no questions. Almost 200 people did not confirm the transfer and thus left the list. When I asked a sample why, the response was some form of "I moved out of the neighborhood years ago but never unsubscribed." The transfer gave them an easy way to leave. Particularly since most of them had not a clue how to negotiate the website settings for the group to leave any other way. ¡°Please unsubscribe me¡± was a familiar request. Yahoo became so insistent on getting your phone number and setting up a yahoo email address that many people refused to go to the website to subscribe. I subscribed them directly or they sent and email. Thus they never had a password. I would transfer your members list so it can clean itself, then work with whatever else you need to do later. I put a message on the Yahoo groups¡¯s website and set up a message to be sent to anyone who tried to post to that list giving them the new address. The only people who were confused about the switch were those who rarely post. A year or so after the switch, they would try to post to the old address without realizing they were doing it. But that was a total of 5 out of almost 3,000 members. It was truly amazing. After struggling with Neo for years, I was very happy. Sharon ---- Sharon Villines [email protected] |
Re: Can I transfer messages, photos, & files from a Yahoo group without transferring the member list?
Dotty,
Does the transfer process utilize the member's email addressIt uses the email one (in the Email column of the Manage Members list of the Yahoo group). ... I receive my various group messages at either my Windstream orIf those various groups each transfer to Groups.io, you'll end up with more than one Account at Groups.io - one for each email address. Unlike Yahoo, Groups.io does not (yet) support managing multiple subscription addresses within a single account. I think that can be rectified after the fact by asking [email protected] to merge the accounts. But then you would end up with all the messages going to that one address, which you might not want. ... there shouldn't be a problem with most of them being able toIf they're ok using the address that transferred you don't need to. As a result of the transfer they have been added to your group's Members list - they can receive and send group messages by email. They would only need to log in if they needed to access their account information or your group's members-only content. If they want to change their email address, but can't log in to achieve that, then there's no problem with you sending them an invitation at their desired address. Could I then delete their old membership from the transferred list? That's the only downside I know of, and if for some reason they can't log in using that address then they're stuck with that downside anyway. So you might as well delete the address they won't be using. Thanks for your help, and that of other members! You're most welcome. Shal |
Re: Can I transfer messages, photos, & files from a Yahoo group without transferring the member list?
Thanks, Shal.? Your reasoning for transferring the member list makes sense.? But it brings to mind another question.?
Does the transfer process utilize the member's email address designated to receive Yahoo group messages, or the Yahoo login email (or ID/profile) which is required to login to Yahoo?? As you know, they might not be the same.? For instance, I have to login with the old Yahoo ID I created when joining my first group 15 yrs ago.? But I receive my various group messages at either my Windstream or Gmail addresses.? I just ignore the fact that I even have the Yahoo email account that was automatically created.? Some of my members have lost the ability to login to the Yahoo website, because they don't remember their profile password and can't successfully reset it to to a new one.? My continuing difficulty in trying to help them gain access is one of the reasons I'm getting closer to transferring to Groups.io. If the initial Groups.io message is sent to their "preferred" email address as designated on the Yahoo group, there shouldn't be a problem with most of them being able to complete the Groups.io login process.? For those few who might not be able to do that, will there be a problem with my issuing a new invitation to join after the group list is transferred?? Could I then delete their old membership from the transferred list?? I understand that it would mean they can't edit old postings, but that shouldn't be an issue with our group.? A limited few do all the postings; the majority just read the emailed messages and login occasionally to view new photos. I've found the GMF for Y!groups a great help in managing the changes since Neo, and now the GMF for Groups.io to educate me about such a promising alternative.? I think the time has come to talk to my group about making the change.? Thanks for your help, and that of other members! Dotty |
Re: Can I transfer messages, photos, & files from a Yahoo group without transferring the member list?
Dotty,
I will want to transfer all the messages, photos, & files. However, IYou can ask (in step 2 of the transfer instructions) for Groups.io to omit things from the transfer, but I wouldn't recommend skipping the member list. The reason is that the member list is usually copied first so that other content (messages, files, photos, etc.) can be properly connected to the contributing member. That preserves the member's ability to delete or edit their content. I'm aware that each member could change their email address afterYou may find that a lot easier to do with Groups.io than it would have been under Yahoo Groups -- with the caveat that the member must still be able to access mail sent to the address they used in your Yahoo Group. Otherwise you may as well invite them anew. 1) Point them to the account page: /account 2) They'll be asked to Log In. Since they don't yet have a password, tell them to click the button that says "Email me a link to log in". 3) Tell them to enter the email address which they had in your Yahoo Group (their "old" address"). 4) When they receive that message, click through the link it provides and they will now be logged in to Groups.io. The login will last 30 days, or until they delete their browser cookies, or log out. 5) In their account page (the link above) they can change their Email address and/or set a Password. Note that a password is not necessary - they could instead use the "Email me a link to log in" button each time they need to log in. That's very handy on mobile devices, where typing or copy/pasting passwords is usually awkward. And it is slightly more secure: there's no password that a hacker might steal or guess. The same steps apply to members who don't want to change their email address, but just want to log in for the first time. Shal |
Can I transfer messages, photos, & files from a Yahoo group without transferring the member list?
I am considering transferring the small Yahoo group I own to Groups.io.? I will want to transfer all the messages, photos, & files.? However, I do not necessarily want to transfer the Yahoo member list as it now exists.? I would like to use this opportunity to "clean up" the member list.? It is a relatively small group of 40+ members, many of which are not particularly computer proficient.? If I could avoid the member transfer, then I could issue invitations to the new Groups.io group using the preferred email address of each member (rather than the email currently being used in the Yahoo group, which may not be one they often check.)
I'm aware that each member could change their email address after being subscribed via a list transfer, but some members would have to be walked through that process individually.? I'd like to avoid having to do that.? Dotty |

Re: Photos/messages not working for some?
Arno,
Is that the way attachments to an eMail are handled in Groups.io ?No. This was discussing Photo storage, whether uploaded directly or sent as part of an email message. That would cause a real problem for me as my eMail client would not beBut yes, sometimes. Message attachments, if allowed by the group, are stored by Groups.io so that members reading the group's pages can access the attachments. Normally the attachments are passed straight through to outbound email messages to those members which receive individual messages. If a member chooses to limit attachment size (or a moderator has set that member's limit) then that member will receive a link to the attachment rather than the file itself. I think the stored attachments are also hosted in a separate server from the Files folder they're listed in, but as far as I can tell that's completely hidden from us end-users. Shal |

Re: Photos/messages not working for some?
LeeAnne,
The problem seems to be fixed with the Ctrl+F5.Interesting. I think that implies that for at least some browser it is possible for the lifetime of the page cache to exceed the lifetime of those access keys. I think this is a kind of unintended consequence resulting from the photo image files being hosted in a different server than the page that displays them. It is a kind of internal plumbing issue that isn't normally noticed by the end users - unless it breaks. The difference between Firefox and IE may simply be a difference in timing - Firefox may have had that page in its cache longer. I don't know if that's something that Mark can fix, but I'll CC support on this reply to see what he says. Shal |
