Bounce reason?

Is there any general opinion as to why members of a premium transferred group are bouncing? I know it has been discussed but I don¡¯t know if anything was decided. Yahoo used to tell you why there was a bounce.

Thank you

Re: Is there a way to automatically respond to people posting in my old yahoo group telling them to move to groups.io? #yahoo

Adam, Chris,

Set it to "Announcement" and they will not be able to post and that
/should/ get their attention.
In the controls of a Yahoo Group that would be on the Access Control tab of the Control Panel. In the row for "Messages-Who can post" move the selector to the Moderators Only column.

Or, as I did, on the Moderation tab select Moderated, and use the Reject with Reply function to remind the stragglers about the change of posting address.

Transfers caught up #migration

There was a message on Friday morning from Mark (Groups.io).?From November 15, 2019

Hi All,
As of this morning, we've completely worked through the backlog of Yahoo Group transfer requests. It took 29 days, but we did it. :-)
I've removed the option to pay for a priority transfer.
?I'm still only responding to support emails from premium group owners right now. There's just too much otherwise. Also, the beta group is still moderated.
A reminder: please get your transfer requests in by the end of the month.
Thanks,
Mark
?
If you are still in limbo, you need to find out what's happening. Check the status of your transfer.

People are reporting really quick turn around. Earlier today someone said: "taking about an hour from go-ahead to completion."

Re: Multiple e-mail problem

Ginger,

My group still shows up under my Hotmail account, so hopefully,
I will now get messages delivered there.
Whether or not you receive messages from a particular group is controlled by the settings in the Subscription page of that group, when signed in using the email address in question.

Since I deleted the account with the "wrong" address will my messages
now go to the hotmail address, or is there something else I need to
do?
Deleting that account won't have any effect on delivery to another account.

I was able to delete the account under the "wrong" e-mail.
...
I can't see the membership list on that group to know if I am
subscribed under two different e-mail addresses.
If you deleted the account for the wrong address, then it is no longer subscribed to any groups. The mods on that group may not know how to tell how many subscriptions you have, unless you've given them a list of all of your email addresses to check.

Re: yahoo group transfer

But Mark says he caught up.

Did you pay for 1 year of premium?

Did you double-check the transfer status?

If you think you've requested a transfer and it's not complete, there's a problem with it. ?Go through the Detailed Instructions to find out where you're at, /g/GroupManagersForum/message/23597?
?
Go to the Yahoo transfer page at /yahootransfer
Select the transfer you want to check status on from "Existing Transfers" at lower right (click on its name)*
The box at the top of the resulting page will tell you the status of that transfer.
Repeat for any other transfers you may have in progress.
For transfers that are actually approved and in progress, see also: to see at which stage you are in the transfer queue.

Re: Second group to move

Eric,

I have renamed the existing group to it's it's use as the primary
group. I clicked on the button and nothing seems to have changed.
If the group is still without subgroups, then the name change should be instantaneous when you push the Update Group button at the bottom of the Settings page.

It should appear under the new name in the Your Groups list and elsewhere. You might need to refresh your browser page to see it though.

Probably a case of gray listing by your provider then.? Some of them seem to do that on a regular, but random, basis for some reason.

I'm not sure if you also need Restricted Membership. That's up
to you as a matter of the group's "culture" - whether you're open
to people of all backgrounds and level of experience who are
interested in your topic, or whether you want to qualify members
by some criteria.
I set all my groups to moderated. If the messages are visible to members and there's no approval process for members it lets anyone in to scan your archives. In one group, I ask applicants to tell me why they want to join. I get all kinds of answers, but it tells me most people are interested. On the others I can just watch for suspicious members. I think of it like having a screen door on an open back door - it doesn't keep out a determined wind, but it helps keep the flies out.

It's on the site home page, but you have to be logged out to see it, /? Probably exists elsewhere as well.

It would be nice to have the option (and if enacted), could be anonymous for usage.? And users would of course have to accept the privacy policy messages are being tracked for open rates.

IIRC one of Groups.io's selling points (along with "no advertising") was (is?) "no tracking", although I have to admit I cannot find anywhere at the moment that specfically says either.

On that basis I'm not sure how Mark would react to someone operating tracking on a specific group or groups.

John -- As a corollary to this, you cannot assign ownership to someone who isn't *currently* a member of your group. Also, as people leave, ownership of their abandoned photos gets lost. Like it or not, that's the way it is.

Doing a bit more digging I found myself turning to the Terms of Service (again) and found that what you are looking for might well be in breach of Conditions of Use / User Conduct point 9 and possibly also Commercial Use.

Re: How much time does it take to manage a group?

Ken,

I am a member of several groups, so I know about "Flame Wars" and so
forth. The usual response seems to be for a Moderator to step in say
"Take it off-list."
A flame war is one circumstance in which you might consider temporarily checking the Moderated box in the Spam Control section of the group's settings page. That way you can reject messages that are more heat than light. It is the ultimate fire extinguisher, if you want to use it that way. Or, simply causing message traffic to slow down (due to the time it takes you to get around to approving them) can substantially cool the flames.

But in normal times, I concur with your choice of New Users Moderated as adequate spam control.

This is what my Group Settings look like right now:
I'm not sure if you also need Restricted Membership. That's up to you as a matter of the group's "culture" - whether you're open to people of all backgrounds and level of experience who are interested in your topic, or whether you want to qualify members by some criteria. I don't know enough about your vision for your group to advise one or the other for this.

Having the group's messages visible to anyone can be a benefit to help and hobby groups where the subject matter is impersonal. It means, among other things, that people can find your group's messages in web search results on the topic, thus potentially growing the group.

There are other types of groups, such as my classmate group, where we discuss things we wouldn't want to see on a billboard, including our phone numbers and addresses and when we'll be attending a reunion, etc.

So the Visibility setting for the group's messages is something that you want to fit the nature of the group and the type of information its members share. It sounds like you've got the right choice for a technical group.

You might want to consider making the group's Wiki visible to the public as well, for much the same reason. Your type of group is unlikely to put any personal information in there, so this increases the material that might lead more people to find your group.

Re: How much time does it take to manage a group?

I am still asking myself if monitoring a Group is how I want to
spend my remaining time on Earth.
Well, "monitoring" is the wrong word here. What you should be
doing is "moderating", i.e. step in when you are needed, but
don't do anything else (unless you are also going to be a
participant).

Samuel
On my own groups I typically respond to situations as the "list janitor". When I post as myself, I use my name to close the post. Eventually I suspect you'll find that what you do is watch the traffic and enjoy the threads. Most of what you might do is typically behind the scenes and no one notices.

That's fine but of no help when other members decide to upload photos. It's much better to get the "uploading" resizing setting right and that will keep everybody's photos to a sensible size.
