#membership Members with Registered Emails, But Nowhere To Be Found #membership #bug

I have now run into this problem twice. ?I try to change a member's email address to the one that person now prefers, but I am told by groups.io that that new address is already registered. ?Yet when I try to search both the registered address and also her display name, that address is nowhere to be found.

I finally solved it by deleting her old membership, waiting awhile, and then direct adding her at the new address. ?It worked.

But how did this happen in the first place? I checked the old Yahoo member records, and there is only that member's one, old email address, not the one that groups.io says is registered.

As I said, I have just run into this again and wonder how often it will happen. Help!

Nancy -- There is currently no way to manually transfer your group's emails and import them into the groups.io message archive, all threaded and searchable and attributed to the correct people who posted them. If you want that, you have to pay for a year of Premium and undergo the Easy Group Transfer.

That said, you can acquire your messages from Y!G by other means and upload the resulting archive to the Files area.?

Michael -- Obviously, you can use the tags supported by the editor menu icons. Other than that, I have not seen any documentation on this.?

For example, I'm seeing that <iframe>s? are stripped when I save a page.
Is that expected?

Yes, it is expected. Iframes can be a vector for a phishing site, so at least this makes sense. Web forms, too. However, many totally benign constructs (like inline styles) are stripped. Even "style="float: right;" doesn't work.

Please note that the online message editor will also fail to save these constructs if you attempt to enter them in "source code" mode. I do understand the principle behind this but some of it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.?

I'm told that groups.io uses bootstrap 3 style sheets, so you should be able to apply those existing class definitions. The rest is trial and error. If you perform a comprehensive test of any kind please come back here and report your findings.

Bruce

What are all the allowed or perhaps all the disallowed tags in a Wiki page?

Yes, iframe is one of the stripped commands.? I don't know what they all are, but the editor is TinyMCE based.? I suspect there may not be a full list, in hopes of slowing down the hackers.

Re: Personalgroupware (PG Offline)

Hands up, I'd simply assumed from the charges being in USD that he was US based. That'll teach me (again) not to make rash assumptions! Thanks for the correction Duane/Donald

Re: "Average Pace" of transfers

I agree.? It's gone way quicker than expected in recent days.? Our group is in the final 10 countdown right now to import and we were at #100 on Monday

Re: Personalgroupware (PG Offline)

He's in Scotland. Not sure how you thought he was in the US but he's across the big pond.?

Re: Change destination for one of my group transfers

Dale,
?
I am going to try to say this as nicely as I can.
?
First off, Groups.io and Mark are not in any way focused on ringing the cash register.
?
Secondly, one reason possibly why your groups imported incorrectly could be because You when choosing which Yahoo group to import to which Groups.io group could have chosen the wrong group.
?
Mark and Groups.io are trying their best to get all the Yahoo groups transferred to Groups.io.? A lot of this transfer process is manual, which means a lot of time spent.? You will find when the importing of Yahoo groups tapers off, you will get a same day assistance or answer when support is contacted most of the time.
?
PLEASE, be patient.? Support will get to your problem as soon as possible.

Kathleen,? this is what happened to me, somehow my YG Group was Mis-Mapped to Transfer to the wrong Destination IO group.? I sent emails for a week to Support at IO and never got a human reply.? There was no way to change/fix the destination.? I thought that maybe if I paid the $200 expedite fee they would see my emails asking to fixt the mapping.? ?The worst ting happned, they put the wrong Members, files and messages into the wrong group.

Converting IgnoredAmbience's JSON files to EML

Hello everyone

I'm sure the folks over at IgnoredAmbience[1] will write a fantastic script to convert their JSON files to EML or MBOX, but in the mean time, if anyone wants to convert JSON files downloaded using IgnoredAmbience's python script, this little AutoIt script of mine may be able to do it:

It converts the non-HTML JSON files to EML files, which Thunderbird accepts as "real" e-mail files.

I think I finally understand what you are saying and for your group, it does seem to make sense. From what you explained, it is because members either aren't paying attention or they don't understand what they are doing.?

In this situation, I would consider other solutions.?
If it is a recurring problem througout the group, perhaps a monthly notice educating them on the proper process could go out for the next 6 months.
If the problem is confined to a few known users, then perhaps educate them each time they email you instead of the group.?

You could make a wiki page tutorial and refer them to that.?

This does seem to be eithet an educational issue or a one of the user not caring enough to learn and make a corrective action.?

Lucy -- If it's only happening in the one group that you own, that suggests something amiss with that group.

Try this:?
-- Click open your Settings page (Admin>Settings).
-- Scroll down to the Features>Photos block.
-- Look at "Max Size in Email." Pull down the menu and change the entry to "No resizing."
-- Scroll further down and click the blue "Update Group" button.

Hope this helps,

Re: Member Switchover Timing

What is her membership status? i.e. did she retain her join date of the yahoo date or is it the current join date? Not that most people will care, just curious.

I just completed an experiment for Bruce... One of my existing members joined our new empty group here, with the same email address, before the import. Bruce wondered it she still retained ownership of her messages AFTER the import, so I asked her to edit a message from 2016 in our newly imported group.

Voila! She was able to do so. Ownership was retained!

Also, her edit was sent for re-moderation and approval to post.

Hopefully, our little test will allay one worry about moving members and getting going here while awaiting import.

Re: Q about finding a particular member

Sandi D.

When searching for a particular member you need to search with a peice of known information that they have entered in your IO Group. Enter that in the search box. You don't say if your group is new or was transferred from YG. I am guessing transferred given you have 3000 members.?

The email address may or may not get you there. It should, if the member is still using the same email address they used in the YG. But if they signed up for IO under a different email address they could have changed their email address in the IO group if that was allowed.?

I moderate a new (not transferred) group. I have found searching?by name will not work unless the person entered part of their name as his/her display name. Those who have not logged into IO have a blank display name. Our group is set up to allow me to edit their Display Name. Any blanks, and fill it in with their real name. IDK, but am guessing that YG transfers may put their Yahoo user name in the IO display field. If so, that won't help you to search under their real name.?

They will not be listed in the directory by name unless you require them to use their name in the display field.
If your group is new and requires approval, you might search your approval emails for those containing the name you are looking for.?

My last suggestion is to download the CSV file (spreadsheet) of your members and use your computer software to search for portions of their previously known YG ID or YG email address. The CSV file contains their email, display and user name, among other things.?

In our group, we require every member to use their first name and last name initial (or last name) as their display name. We require everyone to use their Full Name in their signature. We require them to provide us (owner/moderator) their full name in the approval emails.?

IO balances personal privacy along with the IO Group Owners parameters for data sharing of personal information within the group. The only way you can ensure finding what you are searching for (in this case a name) is to maintain a personal spreadsheet of your members with everyone's data and add a name field to it. That way, if someone later switched their display name, you can refer to your spreadsheet that links real names to display names and email addresses.
