Re: Is there a need for two owners?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThis stuff could get very complicated I think. So do it the right and straight forward way. Look for a trusted person that is registered as a co owner and you are out of trubble. This is not only the point with a group ownership, we sometimes miss in our daily live that it could get very complicated for someone that has to clean up when someone dies. That's the reason why I put all important informations in a encrypted database and share this with my buissiness partner, he is doing the same. You don't know what can happen tomorrow. Isidro

Re: Transferring a bunch of tiny groups
Hi Cal: You have asked a great question, in that it is about an issue that many owners of groups at Yahoo Groups are likely facing. It is also one that I faced when I first learned of the impending massive downscaling/crippling of Yahoo Groups (YG), since I owned about 34 list groups at Yahoo Groups, some of them dating back to they year 2000, when they were hosted at Egroups a Yahoo Groups legacy predecessor which was absorbed by Yahoo in late 2000 and morphed into Yahoo Groups. BTW, Egroups, about one year prior to its purchase by Yahoo, had merged with OneList, a pioneering email list group service that had been, in fact, created by Mark Fletcher, who is the founder of Groups.io (information in this section was updated/corrected thanks to a clarification note from a moderator).? In my case, my groups at YG ranged in size from 9 members to about 3,000 members apiece, with a median membership count of around 175 members. Luckily, a number of these groups covered similarly-themed-topics that could easily be condensed or combined into one larger group. I was also able to ascertain fairly quickly that Groups.io allows import of more than one Yahoo group into a single Premium group at Groups.io, without incurring any extra charges beyond the Premium yearly fee for that Groups.io group. So, I ultimately chose to do the following: 1) to abandon about 15 of my smaller or lesser-used groups at Yahoo Groups, and to import the remaining 19 to a somewhat smaller number of groups here at Groups.io. 2) to create 7 Premium groups here at Groups.io, and to transfer into them the content of the 19 of my list groups at Yahoo Groups that I chose to continue; some of my Groups.io groups received a transfer of only one group from YG, while others received transfers of members and message archives from anywhere from two to six Yahoo Groups. Now, I am aware that many folks here at Groups.io who do that choose to create two or more suitably-named subgroups under their Groups.io group, and to transfer different groups from YG into different subgroups under the same group (of course, in such cases, while the relevant imported messages and files are stored under the subgroup, the primary membership list must be stored? under the main parent group). In my case, I elected not to bother with creating subgroups, and instead, in the cases where I was transferring multiple groups from YG into a single Groups.io group, I chose to import each of those YG groups into the main group here at Groups.io. Now, I must also add here that I always believe in fairly supporting the various services that I use, and in helping to ensure that the business/service remains sustainable for many years to come. And, in this case, I had created each of my seven new groups here at Groups.io before Oct. 22, and thus I had paid only a $110 yearly fee for each Premium group; in other words, I created all of them before Groups,io raised the yearly fee for a new Premium group to $220 per year to more fairly cover the costs of handling all of the transfers. In closing, I must take a moment to say that I very much appreciate Groups.io -- I feel that it is a great service, and it manages to host list groups in a way that is far more robust, efficient, effective, versatile and friendly than the long-neglected Yahoo Groups and Google Groups services have ever managed to offer! I also appreciate the massive amount of work that Mark and his staff have been putting into handling the unexpected and unprecedented and ever-increasing number of requests for transfers from YG since Verizon announced the upcoming near-demise of Yahoo Groups on Oct. 16.? |
Re: Transferring a bunch of tiny groups
I had a group of about 23 members and did the transfer manually.? Members is easy©¤you just have to issue invitations to each of them.? Files and Photos can be a lengthy operation if you have lots of them but not if you only have a few.? We had lots of photos and I took the opportunity to edit out old and obsolete pictures so it took an hour or two. Good luck, On 28/10/2019 07:01, Cal Simone wrote:

Hi All,
New here - just trying to get first Yahoo Group transfer underway - once you have made the request the instructions are to invite [email protected]?to make them a moderator: However when ever I try and initiate an invite in the group it errors out as an invalid email address? So I am rather stumped - am I doing something obvious wrong, or is this a bug? Many TIA, John ? |
Transferring a bunch of tiny groups
Greetings,
I have between 12 and 20 Yahoo groups, most of which are tiny (a few members, 100-200 posts, and maybe a handful of files (though some have no files), most of which aren't very active.? I can't afford $110 for each one.? Can someone as the groups.io owner(s) if I get them all transferred for one fee, or a rate for transferring all of them? Thanks, |
Re: Narrow formatting in Digests?
Phil,
Ah, so you mean via Gmail or equivalent¡ªinteresting.I read in Thunderbird, and your example looks normal to me as well. I think the confusion here is that what you're calling "silly narrow columns" is in fact exactly what the rest of us are calling normal. That's based on your screenshot of the top of a digest: it looks normal. The only thing unusual is the large window size you are displaying it in. Yes, the scroll bar is out at the edge of the window, as it should be. I've never used a WebTV, but sizer tells me that a minimum appropriate window width for reading a digest is 820 pixels. Wider than that leaves grey boarders of increasing width to either side. To me, this seems like a normal, comfortable, reading width. Going wider would make it more difficult for the eye to scan the lines, significantly slowing (my) reading comprehension speed. Expedited Transfer Completed Very Quickly!
The Easy Yahoo Group Transfer of my relatively small Yahoo Group (80 members, 13465 messages, 3622 photos, 162 files) was completed this afternoon.? After working my way through the multi-step process starting last weekend, I gave the "Go Ahead to Transfer" request late night Tuesday, Oct. 22.? I remained in Step 1 (waiting to download from Yahoo) until sometime on Friday, Oct. 25, when I reached Step 2 (download in progress).? By 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 I was at Step 3 (waiting to upload to Groups.io) with 395 groups in queue ahead of me.? As of 3 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 27, there were still 383 ahead of me.? I concluded that at approximately 10 groups per day, it might be 30 - 40 days before my transfer was completed.? (I did consider that Mark is putting more emphasis and resources on downloading content right now, with the timeline for the upload process being less critical.? If the demand for downloading slows with fewer new transfer requests, then perhaps the uploading can move more quickly, and the queue will move more quickly.)
Considering upcoming activities that will require my attention, I eventually decided to pay the additional $200 to Expedite my transfer.? I was unsure if that was indeed an option after the transfer had been started, but the "Expedite for $200" button was still at the bottom of the screen for that group, so I gave it a try.? Sure enough, my payment was accepted.? When I refreshed the page, immediately my status box reported "0 groups ahead in queue"!? I was surprised, as I expected there to be a fair number of expedited groups ahead of me.? About 1 1/2 hrs. later, at 4:30 p.m. I received the "Your Group Has Been Transferred" completion email, with details of the members and parts successfully transferred.? WOW!? I realize the extra $200 cost of an expedited transfer is not affordable for many (or most) groups, especially those who were unable to upgrade to Premium at the $110 price.? But for any who are considering the expedite option, I can attest that it most definitely "sped up" the process!? I will still need to follow up on members who did not get transferred (because they had their email set as "Not Disclosed" in the Yahoo Group).? But that is not a priority at this time.? My main goal was to retain the 20+ years archived content before it was lost. I do have another group transfer in progress in the queue at 366.? I have no plans to expedite that one.? It will be interesting to see just how long that one will take before the transfer is completed. Dotty |
Main page message count seems frozen. . .
Just noticed that for the last two days the message count for OCT seems frozen on my group at 49.
There have been four posts to our group today yet that counter is not advancing and remains at 49. Is anyone else having this problem? I tried refreshing the page and even logging out and back in, but to no avail. Is this a known bug or could it perhaps somehow be due to the large influx of new group transfers getting in queue to be transfered plus the fact that there are so many transfers in progress? I've never noticed this happening before. I'm sure it's nothng to do with my group's settings since I haven't changed them in a while. Comments? Suggestions? TIA Paul M. Re: Is there a need for two owners?
There are legal issues involved. It is not that simple if the owner dies.

I think support might do something like this to keep the income flowing, and besides what would it hurt. |
Re: Is there a need for two owners?
Don,
In the case of an owner of a Premium group that pays money every monthThere currently is no succession mechanism implemented or policy stated. If there were a co-owner, or a moderator with the Billing permission, that person could take on the payments without need for support. My own opinion is that if your group is important enough to you that you chose to go to the Premium plan, it probably should be important enough to you to ensure you have one or multiple potential successors promoted in advance. I think support might do something like this to keep the incomeI don't know that the billing would factor in to whatever future mechanism or policy might be implemented. Until then that's definitely the kind of thing support would likely handle case-by-case. Re: Limited number of invites?
#invitation
I just tried to upload a text file with my invites (2400 members), but I didn't get this message about reaching a maximum invite limit. ?I didn't see any confirmation of invitations being sent and none of them show up under sent invitations. ?Did it not go through? ?Should I try saving the text file in a different format?
