If people prefer to read their messages online, I believe it it best to respect that; forcing them to receive unwanted emails will only chase them away.

However, it's nice to be able to contact everyone if unusual circumstances (like this one) arise. The "Special Notices" option provides that functionality, and is the default if a "no email" person is transferred into a groups.io group that does not permit the "no email" message delivery option.

Sure.

Direct Add is achieved almost exactly like sending an Invitation. The screens even look almost identical. The only real difference is that the subscription proposal does not have to be accepted on the receiving end. The people being added are shanghaied directly into the group, do not have to confirm their accounts, and will begin to receive group emails immediately.

This can be very handy if you have a lot of people who are afraid to click on links in emails or otherwise struggle with the normal invitation process. Paying for Premium every year and using Direct Add instead of Invite has saved my primary group a lot of hand-holding.

All that said -- in the context of migrating from Yahoo Groups on the cheap -- there is nothing to prohibit you from keeping that ten bucks in your pocket and simply using the Invite process instead.

Yeah, pretty much.

You can try to notify them by collecting all the "no email" people and contacting them directly (i.e.: outside of Y!G). In practice, I think you'll find that most of those accounts are deadwood and emails will begin to bounce as soon as you start sending them anything.

Group.io's excellent service

David Haun

Last year when the first rumors of Yahoo Group's demise started to surface, Michoacan Net moved to groups.io and became? [email protected] ? There were no transition issues and we have had no problems with our messages or from our members.? In fact, I'm not sure everyone knew they were in a new group since our group went from Michoacan_Net (yahoo) to MichoacanNet (.io)?
Since we switched, there have been no issues with the new site and I'm very pleased with everything involved with groups.io.?
This managers forum is a great help since they actually answer emails.?? BUT, since I have never had problems,? I've never needed help.?

If you go to Admin>Upgrade and click the "View/Change Plan" button, there are options for Premium Yearly or Premium Monthly.

You might find a month of Premium handy if you want to Direct Add subscribers to your group without going through the invitation process. It is also a lot cheaper ($10 vs $110).

However, if you want groups.io to attempt to move your message archive, files and photos and so on (in addition to your subscribers), you have to pay the $110. This payment also allows you to re-try the transfer later if some content doesn't make it over, due to ongoing Yahoo server issues.

The money has to be paid up-front and there are no refunds.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Transferring Small Yahoo Groups

Definitely disappointing. I'll stop recommending groups.io to people, then, and definitely look for alternatives for my groups in the future.?

The items that count against your storage limit are listed near the bottom of the Pricing page (/static/pricing).

Choosing recurring monthly payments is an option for normal Premium access, but is not an option if you expect the transfer agent to move your content for you.

You actually must create the group before you can transfer into it, so you pretty much have to.

As for using the new group ahead of the transfer, that's up to you. I tried to keep most of the traffic back in Yahoo prior to moving my groups, but that was before they started crashing and burning; and no one has reported any serious downside to doing otherwise.?

---- Will there be an interruption with the group usage while the content is being migrated over?
Not that I have noticed. You may get some interleaving of message numbers, but that's about it.

When the transfer happens, you will get a summary report. It will contain a list of things that aren't transferred. One of the things that don't get transferred are email addresses that have already joined the destination group. I believe content "ownership" still gets assigned correctly, though.

---- Is the timing of our GROUP starting dependent on the migration?
My guess is no, but I'm frankly not entirely sure what you mean here.

I do suggest you put the Yahoo group on moderation as soon as you notice that the transfer has actually started. This allows you to intervene and let people know to start posting at the other location, so that you don't leave too many messages or other things orphaned back in the Yahoo group.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

question about 10 GB limit

Hi...

I bought the service for $110 a year.? It says I have a 10 GB limit.?

Do emails count against this 10 GB limit?? Or is it just files and photos?

Thank you,

jack

Is there no option for a yearly commitment at monthly payments? That is a /lot/ of money and a lot of us trying to keep our groups alive can't come up with it in a lump sum.?

New Group Questions: Migration Questions #yahoo

We are going to start using your premium service - moving from yahoo ASAP. Quick question (LOVE YOUR PRODUCT!):

---- Can you start the group without having the Yahoo content pulled over? (we still need to put our request into you)
---- Will there be an interruption with the group usage while the content is being migrated over?
---- Is the timing of our GROUP starting dependent on the migration?

Trying to ask it 10 different ways so that I am clear on how to communicate with our community :)

No. Nor can you be logged in under more than one email address using the same device/browser.

However, you can subscribe both addresses to the same group and set one of them to No Email. That might be your best option.

Hope this helps,

Re: Goodbye Yahoo Groups

Perhaps look at using sub-groups, I keep all my groups under my main one and it looks like you can do a Yahoo Groups transfer in to a subgroup.
?
I pay monthly for the main group and it seems to translate through to my subs (I could be wrong).
