Sure.

Direct Add is achieved almost exactly like sending an Invitation. The screens even look almost identical. The only real difference is that the subscription proposal does not have to be accepted on the receiving end. The people being added are shanghaied directly into the group, do not have to confirm their accounts, and will begin to receive group emails immediately.

This can be very handy if you have a lot of people who are afraid to click on links in emails or otherwise struggle with the normal invitation process. Paying for Premium every year and using Direct Add instead of Invite has saved my primary group a lot of hand-holding.

All that said -- in the context of migrating from Yahoo Groups on the cheap -- there is nothing to prohibit you from keeping that ten bucks in your pocket and simply using the Invite process instead.
